Howdy.
This is the TWAIN issue that I mentioned in my post.
However, I bet you can scan using VueScan directly and not use is via a
TWAIN plugin.
You can also go to LaserSoft web site and find a SilverFast driver and
software that should work with the CanoScan 9900F model.
I scan with my CanoScan 8800F directly using the Canon software for Mac
OS X 10.7 Lion and it works fine but can't any longer use a TWAIN
plugin to initiate the scan from within Photoshop.

We seek quality, not quantity. And THAT is what you get from a Mac
specialist group.

Find the right one, and all you need is one.
Of course, the right one depends on how you use your Mac, and we all use it differently.
There are no bragging right for the joining the most Mac groups.

You might have better luck joining sites with Forums for questions: OSXHints, MacRumors, etc. The Apple Support Forums offer a lot of advice. The only way to learn is to ask stupid questions and get ridiculed by trolls. It's the one drawback to learning in Lists and Forums, but it's still the cheapest education going.

I finally called Apple and managed to accidentally get iTunes sharing to work (they don't know how either). However, it didn't actually move the tunes from from the PC to the Mac, just allowed me to play them on the Mac when iTunes was open on the PC. So that didn't solve my problem.
Then I hooked up my iPhone to the PC and got the tunes on the iPhone, then hooked the iPhone to the Mac and sync'd. But that didn't work, either. The tunes did not transfer to the Mac but stayed on the phone.
So I'm down to probably having to buy the external DVD drive for the Mac, and that is annoying on a principle level.
I just can't understand why this is so difficult. I want the Mac to be my main computer and would like to get rid of or at least retire the PC, but I keep running into roadblocks.
And although I buy most of my music from iTunes, usually a tune at a time, so far about 300, I got these really cool CDs from the artists at a performance. Also, I have some CDs in my library that I might want to import at some time.

IMO File Sharing Mac-to-Mac is *really* easy. Doing it Mac-to-PC is not so
straight-forward but it can be done. Here's a guide (I don't know if Carol
has 10.7 or 10.8).

Where does principle come into this? I think you mean pride.
Besides if your goal is to "retire the PC" getting a optical drive for the Mac is just part of that. We are still not totally optical drive-free.
You complain of the time you would have to spend to transfer them by cloud server, Dropbox, but what about the time it would take re-importing them from CD. Time is often the price of changing media. That or dollars. A new optical drive will be cheaper than re-purchasing all that music. The memories are really attached to the music, not to the discs.
Besides the complications of syncing to two different computers, let alone PC to Mac. Or you can try copying the albums from iPhone to Mac, with an app like Senuti, or possibly PhoneView. I don't know if they will work from Windows-formated iPhone to Mac.
There is also iTunes Match, but that has an annual fee, or trying to move them over PC to Mac, by updated sneakerware, using a properly formatted thumb drive.
A USB optical drive, is probably the cheapest and easiest way, not to mention a solution what will allow you to also play Movie DVDs.

When Home Sharing was open, did you try displaying the iTunes sidebar, click on the PC library, select the songs you want to move to the Mac library & drag them to that library?

I can understand your frustration. Perhaps I can explain/clarify?
iTunes Sharing and File Sharing are very different. As you found, the first
only allows you to *play* media in one iTunes library using iTunes on
another computer. The second is a long-established feature of networking
computers, the crucial point being that files (or folders of files) can be
*copied* over a network from one computer to another. This is like copying
files to an external drive, moving the drive to the other computer, and
copying them back in, but without the external drive! This is simple
Mac-to-Mac but less so Mac-to-PC.
Try this and see how it goes.

Home Sharing allows you to move music between two computers (mine are both Apple) easily.

I didn't realise you could move/copy the actual files that way. This should
be the best solution for Carol.

Can someone help me, please? I downloaded Java from the Apple website and I installed it but now when I try to print something (more specifically, a SmartSource coupon) it comes back with an error and says Browser: Safari 6, Operating System: Mac 10.8.3, Java Not Detected.
I've downloaded it and installed it ..
What am I doing wrong or how can I fix this?
Thank you for your help!

Safari Preferences/Web Content/Enable JavaScript/check
Safari Preferences/Internet Plug-ins/Allow Java/check
But I never check to allow java. Java alone is dangerous for malicious activity access. I do allow java script.
Then reboot your mac.
