Over the last several weeks it is showing signs of failing. Most apps are
"glitchy", screen turns white, and after it "freezes up" I have to reboot.
Upon reboot there is a lengthy white/gray screen, a blinking gray world
globe in center of screen and finally the apple logo and start-up. This
takes 4 or 5 minutes. This is my first Mac so I don't know if 5 to 6 years
is normal for replacement or not? Also with your vast experience and
knowing how mine acts does this appear to be the "normal" way HD's fail?

Downloaded and then tried the install of Mt Lion from the app store at
which tiime a message indicated that the HD was not repairable and needed
to be replaced. I had checked it the day before thru disk U and it
indicated no problems, go figure.

I have everything backed up on an external HD so should have a clone of the
most recent MT Lion. Not sure I know how to do this but will learn.

Thank you for your input and info.

Yes, downloaded Mt Lion from the app store recently but could not install
as indicated in my reply to Otto. Everything is backed up on an external
HD.....whew, glad I had that!!! Sure pays to have a back-up.

You say "should have a clone". By "clone", I mean a full *bootable* copy of
your Mac's internal drive. How have you done your backups? If you connect
the external drive and go to System Preferences > Startup Disk, does the
external show there? If, not, the backup is not a *bootable* clone.

Last year I had a new hard disc and then soon after a new motherboard - fortunately under AppleCare. Since then I too get the lengthy white screen, about 90 seconds, then the grey globe for about 60 seconds before the Apple logo and a normal start-up. Have never seen this before and wonder if this is a normal thing these days or if it signals some other problem?

Thanks

Les

I've never tried to make a group within Mail. I've always used whatever my address book app was (formerly Outlook, now Mac Contacts). Easy to do within those programs.

Create your groups in Address Book/Contacts, tina. That makes it real simple.
