1. How do you hope to boot your machine to install stuff on the new drive?

2. I don't know how OWC's drive come formatted, or with which partition scheme, but I would never take it for granted. When it arrives, and you have it in the iMac or in an external case and hooked up, boot and used Disk Utility to look at the new drive. It should be using the GUID Partition Map. If not, an Intel machine won't boot from it.

3. From <http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US>

If your only backup method is Time Machine, you do NOT have a bootable clone.
You can use a Time Machine backup to restore your system to the date of the last incremental snapshot, but you cannot boot from a TM disk.

When you are repaired and up and running again, you could get SmartReporter (<http://download.cnet.com/SMARTReporter/3000-2086_4-49263.html>) and install it in your menubar.

Get an enclosure right away, a Firewire enclosure that will work with a Mac. Have it ready when the new drive arrives. Put the new drive into it and try to use Disk Utility to partition it (2 partition and under Options, "GUID") and erase it (Mac OS Extended (Journaled)) so you KNOW it will work to back up the failing internal.

Stupid typo. I mean to say give it ONE partition.

I would always prefer an enclosure (or complete external drive) with 2 or
more different connection types. Macs are moving away from FW anyway, so
I'd want USB (USB 3 if available, but USB 2 will do) as well as FW.

Yes, I think they all come with USB now. I just like to be sure I also have Firewire because then you have covered most of the options.

Funny thing about that: because of today's conversation I decided to configure Mail for Yahoo (and I am not a paid subscriber and have not been for 12-14 or so years) and guess what started coming down into my Mail. It is in IMAP, though, not POP3, which Mail automatically did.

If you use a good password manager, you will never be the victim of an
attack like this...because the IP address does not match.
