I don't understand why we have to pay for free tv shows that can be
watched over the air.

I think you are paying more for the comvenience of acquiring the show at a time of your choosing.  We don't always DVR everything we want to watch nor is everything always available at the library.  So, either wait for a re-run or buy it from Apple, Netflix, Hulu, etc

The comment was about streaming old TV shows such as from Hulu, I believe. For that, you would have to pay for the Hulu subscription.

Many people don't bother watching TV shows on-air anymore. They buy whole
seasons/series on DVD or Blu-ray and watch when it suits them, or download
them from torrent sites (illegally, I think).

Occasionally I'm receiving empty messages from my account on the Yahoo mail server.

The messages have headers but nothing in the message body. If I go to Yahoo and mark it as "not read" and re-download, it arrives complete.

Anyone else have a similar experience?

It's a "classic" -- free (not "Mail Plus") -- account.

Thanks,
Dave

Wikipedia.org frequently provides samples of audio in ogg format files.

What do I need in order to listen to these on a web page using Safari?

Thanks,
Dave

Yeah, but requires:
right click
save as...
open using...

Wikipedia conveniently embeds these files in the web page. Surely there's an add-on to allows them to be played in Safari with a click?

Try FireFox.

It's more likely to have an extension that will play OGG.

I doubt many Safari users would ever come across OGG files, let alone want to write an extension to play them.

Howdy.

Check here for Vorbis info on playing Ogg video on Macintosh.

<http://www.vorbis.com/setup_osx/>

I think the shareware VLC video player should also play Ogg video files
on Macintosh.

Also check this web site for info on a universal plugin as an adjunct
component for QuickTime for Safari may play Ogg files within Safari.
However, this info may be a bit on the old side. (QuickTime is a
player but is also an underlying basic technology for video and audio.)

<http://www.xiph.org/quicktime/about.html>

Here's a forum/discussion from MacRumors with some more Ogg (and MKV)
info.

Howdy.

Here's something inconvenient and weird.

I recently replaced a LG brand internal (2nd / lower bay) BluRay
optical burner in my MacPro. The LG stopped working last week.

The new Pioneer brand BD burner is now installed and working fine.
Except that it disappears when a disc is left in it for some period of
time. The optical disc icon may still appear to be mounted on Desktop
but the drive doesn't appear in the Media eject menu and doesn't appear
in Disk Utility.

Just weird.

Apparently this is a known issue and the OWC web site where I ordered
the drive had an alert about it. The disappearing act seem to affect
most brands of BD burners both external and internal.

The disappearing act happens when a BD or DVD disc is left in the
burner for a period of time.

I've been able to use the Sleep action by pressing the power button on
MacPro to put the computer to sleep and then waking it up and the BD
disc became ejectable with the media eject key and the Menu bar optical
drive menu.

The issue may be confined to the MacPro only and may not be an issue on
iMacs but I'm not certain about this.

There are a number of troubleshooting posts saying to prevent this you
have to turn off "Put the hard disks to sleep when possible" check box
in Energy Saver panel.

The odd thing is that I never experienced this with the LG brand BD
burner during the past two years of use.

Questions:

Anybody else run across this issue?

Is there some fix or solution? I'm trying the no sleep for hard disks
to see what happens.

Yes. This problem has been around a very long time. In fact, I'm surprised it still exists. It is specific to the Pioneer drive in the MacPro. I'm not sure how quickly I can find my notes on the fix. The drive wake/sleep settings have nothing to do with it but there is a setting change that can be made. I may not be able to find my notes until I go back to work tomorrow, but the answer is out there.

cheers,

I think this is the trick I used or something like it.

"I've done further research and have a workable solution, so far so good, after 2 days. Open Apple script, enter the following code,

on idle
do shell script "drutil info"
end idle

Go to File> Save as, application, name the file BDR-205 poll tick the box stay open and save. I saved mine in the Utilities folder.
Next go to System Preferences, open accounts, select your account, select Login items, click the + box, navigate to the Utilities folder and select BDR-205 poll, click the padlock symbol, to save your changes. Exit System Preferences. Shut your machine down, do a cold boot. Upon startup, the script will be active, you'll see it in the right side of the dock. What this does is poll your drive every 30 sec
so it can't go to sleep. The only other thing is to purchase a different drive other than Pioneer, it's too bad Apple doesn't put a better DVD drive in the Macpro, but then again they make sure the original doesn't have this problem. This is a sleep issue in energy saver and the sata ports and how it interacts with certain DVD drives. Hope this helps."

From: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2736635?start=0&tstart=0

I don't remember that anything was visible. There may be a way to make this script run silently.

Also see this longer discussion of the same keep-alive script trick (you need to scroll down the page slightly). It is possible to set a longer poll time. The default is 30 seconds.
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/archives/dec09/122109.html

Again, I'll check my notes at work and see if I have anything better. Who knows. Maybe I never really "fixed" it. It's an oddly sporadic problem. Not everyone has it, though it is common.

Cheers,
tod
