Using latest iMac and Mountain Lion.

I think I have checked everywhere I can and cannot find an answer for what I want to do.

Like some other comments on this and other groups, I too am annoyed at some of the changes Apple made when upgrading to the Lions - Mountain or otherwise. The thing I wish I could change is the folder view when you have items you wish to view by date created and you then have these various levels starting last 7 days…..etc. I would so love to have it the same as it was in Snow Leopard namely in order of date created but just a window full of items not sorted into last 7 days etc.

Is this possible?

I found an online article which says it is possible but even following the instructions it does not work for me.

Thank you for any help you can give.

Charles.

Howdy.

1. Open the Finder windows you want to view in Date Created order.

2. Change to List View.

3. Open from View menu > Show View Options.

4. Click Date Created check box to display the Date Created column (or
other columns you would like).

5. Click Use as Defaults button if you wish all List View displayed
windows to have the Date Created column.

6. You can move these columns to left or right by dragging the column
name title left or right to change the order the columns display.

Thank you Denver Dan - but perhaps I did not make clear in enough detail what I wanted:

I want to see a window full of icons, sorted by date order but with no ''…last 7 days ..'' etc. Your way leaves them in columns which I do not like, I know I might have to change but I would much prefer to have it how I like it……..

Howdy.

OK. Let's see if I understand.

You want to use Icon View only although a similar situation is
available also in List View. ??

You have the View set to one of the 4 Date options:

Date Modified
Date Created
Date Last Opened
Date Added

You don't want to see the sort categories named:

Today
Yesterday
Previous 7 Days
Previous 30 Days
Earlier

OK. Instead of picking the Date Created sort command, you might try
using Icon View and picking the Sort by Name and then use the Clean Up
By . . . command on the View Menu and picking Date Created.

This will do what you want but I don't know it this Sort and Clean Up
by date created will "stick" as you add new files to the
window/folder. You may find yourself repeating this procedure more
than you like.

However, you could customize the Toolbar by adding the Arrange icon and
the Action icon to it for much quicker access to these same Arrange and
Clean Up By commands. I have both of these icons on my Toolbar and use
them frequently for other commands.

I looked at a number of them and I am not certain but I think it might have been this one:

However see the next message I am about to write as I think I now have the answer.

Denver Dan I think you may be a genius……

I have not checked fully but I think it also works if you do None and then Clean up by date created.

Do please tell me how to do what you describe in the paragraph which begins -- "This will do what you want but ..''

Thank you for your help.

In deference to Denver Dan perhaps I should now sign as:

Chichester Charles

(Chichester, England).

I have a relatively new 27" iMac, which means it has no disk drive. So I can't download CDs directly into iTunes via the Mac.
But I have a Windows 7 with a CD drive, so I uploaded 2 new CDs to iTunes in my PC. Then I have home sharing, which should transfer them over to the iMac, which is the main computer. And then I want to get them in my iPhone.
But no. Nothing can be that easy :(
So is there a way to transfer CDs to the iMac without buying the external CD drive, or without paying $20 a year for Match (I know, not expensive, but it's the principal! I don't have that many.)
Thanks lots, as always.

I transfer such music often using Home Sharing between my iMac & MacBook Air. What kind of message are you seeing?

Apple wants you to buy songs from iTunes internet/iPhone download. CD's are disappearing as a viable way to distribute music, however, I still buy them just like you at used CD stores or anywhere. Most music is distributed via internet downloads now.

I had to make a decision a couple months ago of whether to buy an external DVD burner/player, or a BluRay burner/player. My internal iMac DVD player destroyed DVD's I inserted. I chose an external DVD player/burner using firewire.

Firewire and DVD's are beginning to be old tech. I think Thunderbolt is the latest interface to replace firewire. But for now, my choice is providing what I need. But it was my choice.

Buy either an external BluRay or DVD burner/player and continue to buy used CD's till there are no more in the future.

Well you should be able to copy from iTunes and even set it to automatically copy and new imports as long as iTunes is open on both machines and they are on the same network (can see each other) and home sharing is enabled.

But there is also a utility on Apple.com "remote cd" which you install on windows to access via the Mac

I assume Bill was away from his Mac. Here is an Apple article for what he was talking about.

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5287

Or Carol can purchase a generic USB CD/DVD drive for about $40 or an external Apple SuperDrive for $79.

You could install dropbox, which is free, on both the mac and PC and move the ripped music from the iTunes music folder on the PC to the iTunes music folder on on the mac using dropbox. Because you ripped the music from a CD it's perfectly legal to do, then you can sync the phone and the music will be on the phone.

Yes, but that seems absurd when both computers are on the same local
network and any files/folders can be simply copied using File Sharing.

Yeah, for you and me file sharing is easy, but for the average user, it's not so easy. I'm a mac guy and file sharing on the Mac is still a pain and if you don't understand it, it can be a little confusing. This is why I figured dropbox would be easy.
