iMac 10.6.8

I have an ongoing problem with freezes while scrolling. This happens about every two weeks. Yesterday [and other times] the screen went to a white/lt. gray striped design that looks like corduroy. I have to shut down the computer and start it up again. I have also had freezes while typing a sequence of letters and numbers in Finder/Find. Any ideas on how to fix this? I've had these problem for many months. I had to have Apple put a new hard drive in the machine, and I hoped that would fix this problem, but it didn't.

It sounds like a video card to me.

If you have it in writing that Apple suggested you replace your HD to solve this issue, then, you have an out to get them to fix the video card if that is the problem.

But since this does't happen but every few weeks, I am inclined to suggest a software solution. Just my opinion only.

I suggest reinstall the system software from your Snow Leopard installer DVD. I think it is called Archive and install, but don't remember exactly. That way you recover all your data, but have a new system to start over.

Once you reinstalled your system, be very careful when you install new applications. Install an application and wait several days before you install another, so you can watch how your iMac responds to the new app.

How much RAM is installed in your iMac? More RAM always clears up many issues.

It could be a video card, or it could be a loose or failing stick of RAM.

Freezes have nothing to do with striped screen. From your description, it sounds like two issues. It does not sound related to the HD, if it was installed properly.

It could possibly be a heat issue. How long do you run your Mac each day?

Yes, by and large, the file format for Word is what is known as "binary compatible across platforms." That means that Word uses the exact same file format on both a Windows PC and on a Macintosh, assuming that you are using a recent version of Word on the Mac.
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/word
Thus no translation is needed for Word/Mac to read Word/Windows files, and vice versa.

There are a bunch of other programs for the Mac that will open Word files, but none of them do as good a job as Word itself when it comes to files that include complex formatting, or support for Word's advanced features. These include:

TextEdit (a lightweight word processor that comes with your Mac)

Pages ($20) (Apple's own advanced word processor)
http://www.apple.com/iwork/pages/

And any of the Open Office siblings (these are all open source Office clones based on the same codebase as each other):

NeoOffice ($10 donation required for latest version, older versions are free)
http://www.neooffice.org/neojava/en/index.php
(The most stable of the siblings.)

LibreOffice (free)
http://www.libreoffice.org
(The best supported of the siblings.)

Apache OpenOffice (free)
http://www.openoffice.org/porting/mac/
(From the original licensees of the Open Office codebase.)

Calligra (free)
http://www.calligra.org/learn-more/
http://www.calligra.org/get-calligra/
(A new Open Office choice.)

In fact, just about any word processor that you use for the Macintosh nominally supports the Word file format.
There is a comprehensive (though slightly outdated) list of all of the available word processors for the Macintosh here:
http://www.emailman.com/software/wordproc/mac.html
The Word file format is the lingua franca of the word processing world.

G4. X.10.4.11 max ram 500 kHz processor

I have an HP 5610 Officejet that up until a week ago worked normally. Now, whenever I try to print, a PDF appears on the desktop (and no paper copy is made).

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the printer. I have manually trashed the preferences and every file I can find with HP. I have emptied the trash and rebooted. I have trashed all the Adobe preferences.

What haven't I done that may fix this frustrating problem?

Bob

Log into another account. If you don't have one then create one and then log into it. See if it prints normally from there. If it does then you probably do have a bad .plist file and you have to find it.

Have you made any system changes recently, such as adding things that actually get into the guts of the system, not just new applications that simply get dragged into the /Applications folder? If so then I would suspect that.

I have a similar problem when I print to a xerox printer from Photoshop CS5, it lobs a postscript file onto the desktop instead of printing.

I bought CS6 the other day and problem not in CS6.

Are you getting this problem only in one programme?

It doesn't matter what I try to print--same result.

Does anyone of the group play the for Mac only servers of Call of Duty: Black Ops? I have a few questions for you. This game is fun about 40% of the time. 60% of the time is quite interesting.

Isn't there a support group for that somewhere else than here?

If I knew of one, I wouldn't have wasted your time.
