Classic Mode. Some bells are ringing faintly. Does that require double OS install? I'll have to venture into the dark recesses of the "old Mac room" and see what CDs lurk there...
Thanks,
Dave

As it happens, the G4 is too new. I need a serial port (those round DIN connectors) to talk to this peripheral. The G3 PowerBook is the last of the laptops that had this is the PowerBook G3 released September 1998.
Thanks for the pointer to MacTracker. Great resource.
Cheers,
Dave

I have (or had?) an adapter that converted ADB to USB. Here's an example:
<http://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=adb+usb&tag=googhydr-20&index=aps&hvadid=8207756305&hvpos=1t1&hvexid=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=7925242511731501364&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=b&hvdev=c&ref=pd_sl_6o4b3zhowg_b >
Might that help?

The PB G4 has USB. I'm looking into a USB-serial adapter.
Thanks,

It won't, but if you don't go beyond 10.4 Jaguar you can run Classic applications under OS-X.

I have a 700 ? mhz Blue G4 running OS 9.2. Mostly it's for driving an
"obsolete" scanner but I've taken advantage of the situation to run
some nice old software, Texture generators, fractal programs and 3D
software that were never supported past OS9.
These computers can be had for a song.

Howdy.
I think the last PowerBook laptop models that could run Mac OS 9 in
Classic mode were:
PowerBook G4/1.5 12-Inch (Al)
PowerBook G4/1.67 15-Inch (DLSD/HR - Al)
PowerBook G4/1.67 17-Inch (DLSD/HR - Al)
These 3 models may not have a DIN/Serial port and you may need to track
down a G3 model to find that.
Look for a PowerBook G3 Series (September 1998) to find one with an ADB
and a DIN/Serial port as well as the miniature SCSI HDI-30 port.
You can still share this old laptop on an Ethernet network but the
PowerBook G3 Series mentioned above only has Ethernet 10BaseT so be
sure you have an Ethernet Switch and not an Ethernet Hub or everything
on a Hub will slow to the 10BaseT speed. I don't think you could share
this Mac on Ethernet via AppleTalk with a Mac OS X 10.7 or 10.8 Lion or
Mountain Lion Mac. There is another way to share this era Mac without
using AppleTalk but it's been so long since I've thought about it I
can't remember the name or term but it's done in a Control Panel.
You would need to install Mac OS X 10.4.11 Tiger in order to also
install and run Mac OS 9 in Classic mode. Classic mode won't work in
Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard or higher.
Using Classic mode you boot the Mac in Mac OS X and then boot the Mac
OS 9 part using a System Preference Panel for Classic. This same
Classic Panel provides several routine Mac OS 9 functions such as
Rebuilding the Desktop.
Both Mac OS X and Mac OS 9 run at the same time.
You would need to find a Mac OS 9.0 system installer or, IIRC, there is
a Mac OS 9.1 installer CD disc.
Then you would need to find the updaters I listed below and update to
get to the very last Mac OS 9 iteration which was Mac OS 9.2.2.
-CarbonLib 1.6
-Mac OS 9 Audio Update 1.2
-Mac OS 9.0.4 Update
-Mac OS 9.1 Update
-Mac OS 9.2.1 Update
-Mac OS 9.2.2 Update
-OpenGL 1.2.1
-Software Update 1.1.1
-URL Access Install (I don't remember what this updater does)
-USB Car Support 1.4.1
If interested, I have a PowerBook G3 Wall Street which has ADB, the
SCSI HDI-30 mini port, and a serial port which I'd be delighted to
sell. I has all the bells and whistles including two hot swappable
interchangeable bays. The two bays can hold two batteries (doubles run
time on battery), or one battery and one floppy drive, or one battery
and one CD drive, or remove the battery and have a floppy drive and a
CD drive. I have both the floppy and the CD drives. The battery is no
longer chargeable. I think this is the 250 MHz processor model but I'm
not sure. I think a DVD-ROM was also available for the swap bay but I
don't have one. This May 1998 model PowerBook can't run Mac OS X.

I've been having a problem with my 'Reunion39; genealogy application since a couple of days ago. This only happens with this app, so far at least. Whenever I try to launch it, it quits and I get a window 'Problem Report for Reunion'. That report is quite long, but perhaps the following extract will help in solving this:
