I'm a relatively new Apple user, converted from (ugh) Windows, after I finally wised up.

There is one program I have used in Windows, however, that I cannot easily give up. It is a database program called Foxbase. Foxbase is a great database program for many uses. For example, I use it to manage a bog Little League program (well over a thousand players). Fox was developed by an independent programmer many years ago, but unfortunately purchased by Microsoft, and effectively buried. Though it still runs fine in Windows. I'd like to give it up, and go to something just as elegant in the land of OS-X. Right now I run Fox under VMware on my Apple, but that is a bit awkward, and has some practical problems.

Does anyone know a good OS-X substitute for Foxbase?
Thanks for the advice.

Not being familiar with Foxbase, I had to look it up. Wikipedia says that MS Fox Pro 2.6 is compatible with Mac OS X. It doesn't say what version of OS X, and since 10.7 there have been lots of old apps that no longer work in 10.7 or beyond.

Not knowing the features you like about Foxbase, there is also Numbers (about $30) or Office for Mac and Excel (between $100 - 200 for the suite). Most all of the other free suites use Java, which Apple is trying to eliminate, so I don't suggest going in that direction, unless you enjoy converting data between apps.

FoxBASE is from 1984 to 1992. It is time to convert over to an app that is 20 years younger. But then again that was the purpose of your post.

Good luck, that is going to be one helluva data conversion. And with that old a database, I'm sure the best way will be with csv, which leaves behind the formatting.

What options does FoxBase have for exporting data? Any?

Bob: The standard dbase program for Mac is "FileMaker Pro". Take a look at:

http://www.filemaker.com/products/

The 'Pro' version is fairly expensive. You might start out with FileMaker's little sister, "Bento", a scaled-down version, which, as I recall, sells for $49.

Good luck!

Filemaker Pro is a relational database program; my reading suggests that FoxBase was a "flat-file" database.

FMPro would be expensive overkill as a replacement for FB; I would consider Bento ($50 in the Mac App Store). I would be surprised if FoxBase were unable to export as .CSV, and I'm reasonably sure Bento can import that.

There are none. I would start looking at using an open source SQL database like MySQL or the other one whose name escapes me!

That way, you'll always be safe.

I used to receive the same blank docs from Yahoo Mail. I never knew where they came from, nor figured out how to stop them, but since moving to Mountain Lion and using new Yahoo Mail rather than old classic, I no longer get the blank docs. But being Yahoo, I won't be surprised if they ever show up once again sometime.

Howdy.

Excellent info and thanks.

I'll try the polling script.

When I first added a BD burner about two years ago I ordered a Pioneer
brand from OWC. Both a 1st and a 2nd unit shipped by OWC were
defective. OWC was very good about sending replacements and helping
with tech support.

Twice burned so the 3rd time I ordered an LG brand which worked fine
until it's untimely death a week ago. So I'm back to Pioneer and this
odd disappearing act.

Howdy.

Question about this script application.

The script uses the file name BDR-205 poll.

I assume the "BDR-205" refers to a Pioneer BD 205 model.

The new Pioneer BD burner I just installed is a "BDR-208D"; model.

Does the script file name make a difference in the script working?

Howdy.

I just tried this and got an error message when trying to Save as
Application (and as a Script) in Script Editor that

<<The document "Untitled"; could not be saved as "Untitled.app". >>

Any thoughts?

Howdy.

I just found this script and tried it.

repeat
do shell script "drutil info"
delay 28
end repeat

Still get an error message when trying to save. So I can't save it as
anything.

But I clicked the Run button on AppleScript Editor's Toolbar and it
says this script is running.

I'll try to see if this works as a test - - leaving AppleScript open
and running this script - - and insert a BD disc and see what happens.

The script name shouldn't matter. The purpose of the script is to run the drutil utility, which merely polls all your drives. You can also get apps that are supposed to keep drives awake, but the apps I've tried skip drives that aren't mounted which doesn't work for an optical with no disc.

I can't check what I'm running at work until tomorrow, but the second link in my original email goes to a discussion of variations on the same script. It seems to work better to use "idle" instead of repeat. Not sure about the saving problem. I would suspect an authorization problem first. Are you running as admin? Applescript may not work right unless you are. You might also try placing the script inside an Automator app if you are familiar with such things. I think this may be how I'm running it.

I have never seen an explanation of what is actually happening with the Pioneer drives, particularly the 205/208 drives. It can happen with other brands. I've been told that newer firmware fixes the problem but could never test this. I think you've tested for me. ;)

I no longer purchase the Pioneers for my Macs.

Cheers,

Howdy.

Thanks again for info.

I ran the script in AppleScript Editor and it seems to have worked.
Tried two different periods with a BD disc inserted and it didn't
disappear.

Just tried saving the script to Desktop as an app and that worked.
Something odd about my Utilities folder permissions I think. I always
run as Admin.

I have a bit of experience with Automator.

I've just dragged the script app back to the Utilities folder and added
it to Login Items. We'll see what happens after a restart.

Pioneer may have a firmware update for the Pioneer BDR-205 model but
not for the BDR-208 model.

Hi Dan,

I've got no need for this script but had no problem saving it as "untitled";
(although I'd normally give it a proper name, of course). Where are you
trying to save it?

Howdy.

I was trying to save it to my Applications/Utilities folder.

I just save it to the Desktop and then moved it to Utilities.

It's now running as a Login Item and shows up in Activity Monitor.

However, when I did a shut down a few minutes ago the script didn't
want to Quit. I couldn't quit it from the Scripts Poll menu and had
to use Force Quit. The shut down wouldn't proceed unless this script
was quit.

Back to the drawing board! :-)
