Only partially correct. You need to set your "character encoding" to get
the correct conversion happening. You can set both your incoming and
outgoing encoding schemes.
IIRC, the default on Mac is Unicode/UTF-8, I'm sure Windows is not. I'm
also reasonably sure that Yahoo is also not Unicode. I too do not get
proper apostrophes in many messages.
If it only happens with one sender's messages, perhaps you can create a
filter to move those to a particular subfolder, which may have the
ability to set different character encoding.
I use Thunderbird, and I can set a default encoding scheme on a general
level, as well as on individual folders. This lets the majority of
"normal" mail (such as UTF-8) come through normally and the irregular
ones (such as those from known sources get rerouted and recoded through
the filters into their respective subfolders, where they can be read
correctly.)

Sorry yes, it is character encoding. I think it very much depends on your email program, I use Macmail and have little trouble with encoding of foreign characters except where the text has been forwarded from someone else's email, in which case, especially with non-Latin languages, like Hebrew, it comes out as gibberish.

Actually there are 2 problems:
Quad G5, 10.5.8, 12 gbs ram.
I have an internal back-up drive, 3tb. The main drive is 500gb.
I have used SuperDuper to back up the drive over several years. When a 1tb
drive got too full, I purchased the 3tb drive.
I had no problem booting from the 1tb drive. I cannot boot from the new
drive because it has a kernel panic when I try.
I ran TechToolPro5 to repair what I could. It reported no problems with
volume structure.
When I run Disk Permissions Repair on TTP5, it ³finished² in about 10
seconds and gave the message, ³Repaired.²
When I run Disk Utilities to repair permissions, it quits after a second
with the message, ³Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit.²
Suggestions?

Have you tried reinstalling your 3TB system from an installer disk?
If it is backup mostly why not completely reinstall 3TB system?
Is the system on a separate partition on the 3TB?

The system is not on a separate partition. It¹s a bootable clone.

It was a one time, but not now :) I don't have any experience reviving bootable clones. I use Time Machine to backup what I want and forget the system as it can be reinstalled easily. Wish I could help you.
Have you ever tried Disk Warrior? DW used to be a miracle worker. It would revive what TTP couldn't. In recent systems like Mountain Lion, I don't experience bad problems anymore, so I have not had any use for DW.

Ummm.
If your main drive is 500 GB, then it will never need more than 500 GB of space to make a clone backup to.
Or are you multiply partitioning the larger drive, and writing several sequential clones on the same backup drive?
> I cannot boot from the new drive because it has a kernel panic when I try.
Think "32-bit versus 64-bit"....
> As used with Apple Macintosh computers, 64-bit can refer to the processor architecture as well as the operating systems architecture. The PowerMac G5s introduced in June of 2003 were the first desktop 64-bit computers available to consumers. But while the G5 had a 64-bit architecture, the operating system (OS X 10.2.7) had limited support for 64-bit. Apple promised that each new OS X upgrade would bring further support for the 64-bit architecture.

While Snow Leopard was a 64-bit operating system, Apple by this time had moved away from the G5 and its PowerPC architecture, and had instead embraced Intel as its processor of choice. As a result, Snow Leopard was designed to run only on Intel Macs. The desktop G5 will never enjoy the benefit of a full 64-bit OS.

I'm pretty sure the 3TB drive will need Snow Leopard (MacOS 10.6.x), and Snow Leopard needs Intel CPU's.

When I open a PDF form sent to me in order to edit it (to check the check-boxes and enter text in fields), the first tool I see is the cursor as an arrow. This works for checking the check-boxes.
Then I choose the Tools > Annotate > Add Text tool and proceed with filling in the text fields.
Then when I want to go back to checking more check-boxes I can't seem to find a way to change the cursor back to an arrow to do this. I try using the Add Text tool to check a check-box but when I click it just gives me a text insert cursor and awaits key presses (as one would expect).
How do I get the arrow cursor back?
Thanks,
Dave

It's the "index finger" cursor I want to see again. It like a gloved hand extending the index finger so as to click a button or such.

This setting in Mail's preferences keeps defaulting back to "CrossOver Helper". I presume it's trying to open a WIndows mail program (I'm not aware of any I have installed).
Every time I change this to "Mail" and close the Preferences window, next time I check it it has reverted back to "CrossOver Helper".
How can I change this permanently to "Mail"?
I'm not adverse to a little Terminal work.
Thanks,
Dave
