iTunes 11 is a big change, but you can make it a lot more familiar by
selecting View > Show Sidebar.

Gary,
Have you tried rebooting the computer and holding down the (left) mouse button while the reboot occurs? This usually forces the eject function.

That says hardly anything.
What computer?
A built-in slot drive?
A built-in tray drive?
Something else?
OS?

Well, since you have tried everything, I guess we can't help.
But in the off chance that you missed something, and would like some help, why don't you tell us the following:
- Is it a slot or drawer-type disc drive?
- Was it a full-sized disc, or was is a small or odd-shaped disc?
- What have you tried? Like paperclip in the release hole, mouse button down while you restart, etc.

We watch almost no TV so I'm no expert, but I can say that setting up the Apple TV was totally easy and works perfectly.
Since we watch no TV, I can't comment on whether it let us reduce our subscription. We already have just a basic package.

Reducing your cable subscription, depends upon what you like to watch, not what device you watch it on.
I have yet to subscribe to a cable package other than the minimum basic package. Basically it is the local broadcast stations, a few others, like Ion and WGN, and the local free cable stations. Yet, I watch shows from Comedy Central, SyFi, Food, a coupe of other channels, and some random movies.
I only have cable as a means to the cheapest internet connection. I watch the other "channels" by means of the internet. I don't own an AppleTV. Since I am single, I don't watch TV in my living room, I watch it at my desk. I use the TV as a second monitor for my computer.
You viewing location may vary from mine, as well as your choice of shows to view. If cable TV hopes to continue in the future, I feel that they will need to offer al a carte channel selection. But I understand that you are talking currently, not the future.

Yes, "off-square / skewed scans" are the norm.
