But you can't play those on the ATV. MKV is a good open standard but is not
universally supported yet.

At the expense of much larger file sizes.... Almost a factor 3 to 4 ...

The mkv file format is not as anywhere near wildly supported as m4v (i doubt an Apple TV will play them for instance).

I've tested both, and on my hardware using the handbrake high profile preset, i cannot tell any visual difference between the two. I play SD+HD videos to a 40in HD TV via a macmini (using Plex) so its a decent test for me.

It takes a while to rip with Hanbrake, but personally i would suggest it is well worth it.

Yes, but to fix a drive not mounting?

TextEdit will also open Word docs, although it can't save in that format.

Hello,

My experience is that the most trouble is in the following case:

Sender: using the latest version of Office on a PC and clicks the save button
without worrying about the receiver
Receiver: using an old or very old version of Pages or Office for Mac

In general the solution is to ask the sender to save the document in an older
Word format [example: doc versus docx] OR upgrade to the latest Office for Mac
or latest Pages. In the case of a new Mac, the best option is to by the latest
iWork when you get the Mac.

Note: Good vocal interoffice communication skills can minimize the issue...:)

If I create a document with MS Word on a Windows8 computer can it be opened
somehow on a new Mac computer?

Ummm.
If System Profiler says "Charging -- yes", then how does one conclude the adapter has failed?

If it's trying and can't, then you have a mechanical problem. You can try the methods Barry suggests. There is no direct mechanical method for ejecting discs from slot drives. If the disc gets stuck, the drive is generally hosed unless methods like Barry suggests don't work. And there is a good likelyhood you'll wreck it trying anyway.

The method that has almost always worked for me is to shut down the computer then restart it holding the mouse button down persistently. I also have a magic gesture: I hit the eject button on the keyboard every few seconds while continuing to hold down the left mouse button. At some point, so far, it was always worked.

And I thought I was the only one to use that technique!

Works for me, too!

Mail has a setting in Preferences that lets you choose what mail account from which your newly-composed messages are addressed.

My goal is to create a bogus account with a non-existent SMTP server. This will force me to choose which of my accounts I really want to choose rather than forgetting this step and instead accidentally sending, for example, business mail from my personal address.

All looked like it was going fine: I created the bogus account with bogus servers. Then when I go to the "Composing" tab in Mail Preferences, the "Send new messages from" drop-down menu doesn't show the bogus account.

Any idea why this is so and how to make such a non-existent account show up?

Thanks,
Dave

Fixed it.

I changed the outgoing server for the bogus mail account from a legitimate smtp server to a bogus one (ie, smtp.scmumbleff.com).

The account now shows up in the "Send new messages from" list and when I try to send a message it will complain that it's not possible. I'll then choose the proper account for that message and away it goes!

Cheers,
Dave
