System Pref> Startup Disk> There is no "?" on this icon which is labled
"Macintosh HD OSX, 10.8.3". Restart button only blinks once when clicked,
but doesn't restart. Target Disk Mode shows a drop down menu when clicked.
Did not go further here.

In Sys Pref box the Startup Disk icon has a "?" in the center. What is up
with that? In view of my limited knowledge in this matter I apparently
don't know if I have a "bootable"; clone or not. I backed up the iMac via
Time Machine about every 2 to 3 weeks since 2009 but have never used it to
restore anything.

external show there? If, not, the backup is not a *bootable* clone.

Your internal drive is your only bootable one.

Time Machine does not produce clone backups. You can do this using Disk
Utility, Carbon Copy Cloner, or Super Duper. Do you already have the new
drive, and do you have a caddy or enclosure for it so you can connect it to
the Mac?

How large is your TM backup drive, is it partitioned, and how much free
space is there?

Disk utility now shows the internal HD icon along with a RED message as follows "320.07 GB DCWD320" Then this warning "This drive has a hardware problem that can't be repaired. Back up as much as possible and replace the disk......"see Apple etc.

Haven't received the HD from OWC yet. I don't have a caddy/enclosure.

TM backup drive is a WD external with 3.44 GB of 320 GB available. Not partitioned that I know of.

Here are the instructions from Contacts help:

Create a group or folder
In Contacts, choose View > Groups, and then select an account.
Choose File > New Group, and then name the group or folder.
You can also select the contacts you want to group, and then choose File > New Group From Selection.
Add contacts to a group or folder
Select one or more contacts and drag them to a group or folder.
Contacts in an Exchange account can belong to only one folder at a time. When you use folders, any contacts that aren't in a folder you create are in the default Exchange Contacts folder.
You can create subgroups or subfolders by dragging a group or folder to another group or folder.
Hope this helps!

I try this but I can not find Create a group or folder.
I go to contacts
I click file and I get new message, open message, new note, new viewer window but no place does it say new group.
How do I select the contacts from my contacts ? I do not see any place to add a a check mark or select them?
Thanks
Tina

I think you are doing this in Mail. You need to open the Contacts (AKA
Address Book) app, then follow the instructions given by Patti.

Thank you-- Yes I was trying to do this in Mail. With your help I went to the Address Book app and followed Patti's email instructions and I got it.
THANK YOU EVERYONE!!!

I was reconfiguring my Apple Mail to retrieve mail from my Yahoo POP account and couldn't get it to work.

Out of curiosity I opened Terminal and pinged Yahoo and a few other major servers: they all fail with timeout "Host is down".

But if I type in any URL in Safari the page loads without problem. (I'm aware of caching so I typed a URL I never go to: Microsoft (c; .)

I'm confused: how can this be? If ping fails, doesn't mean that the path to the 'net is broken?

I unplugged Ethernet and turned on Airport: no change.

Ideas?

Thanks,
Dave

Many websites disable ping functionality to prevent abuse. It's also
possible that the address you pinged and the address the browser
actually uses might be different.

I just discovered I can't ping my main router:

Dave-Cs-Mac-mini:~ DaveC$ ping 192.168.1.254
PING 192.168.1.254 (192.168.1.254): 56 data bytes
ping: sendto: Host is down
ping: sendto: Host is down
Request timeout for icmp_seq 0

I was able to ping this router as recently as 4 or 6 weeks ago. I can access the router using Safari.

I can't ping any url I can think of -- I've tried dozens. Surely one of them would allow ping.

Confused,
Dave

Well, a logo is just a graphic. Anyone can snag a graphic off any page at all. That means NOTHING.

Well I finally found a phone number for Yahoo support and called them. So the information (below) is incorrect; it is still true that only the "Yahoo Mail Plus" (paid) email account can be accessed via POP and downloaded to Apple Mail (or other client).

Except my iPad retrieves both yahoo and hotmail with no problem. I don't know what the difference is between computer OS and iOS.

All iOS devices don't use POP protocol. iPhones, iPads, etc will access Yahoo (and others) mail without consideration of POP.
