I removed Norton Utilities this morning. It had originally been moved over from my 2007 iMac when I set up the new 2012 iMac in December. It has been on the computer ever since.
Endicia is a shipping label program. I print labels daily. Even so, I did remove it from my startup items. All that is left at this point is:
PseudoAnacron
MenuCalendarClock iCal
Dropbox
Printer Pro Desktop
I called AppleCare yesterday afternoon and they had me go into Recovery Mode and download the Mt. Lion into a newly created Testing HD partition in Disk Utilities. This morning, after I got the new Mt. Lion OS set up I restarted. Everything worked right away even though the computer had been running all night, which is unusual because the frozen cursor problem always occurs after the computer has been on for a while. Thing is the computer wasn't being used, it was just on. Evidently being on and not being used or being on and used makes a difference.
Restarted holding down option key so I could restart in my original Macintosh HD partition and everything worked right away, a surprise again. Half an hour later and after removing Norton Utilities, I restarted in the Testing HD partition. Desktop came up right away, but I got the beach ball instead of the cursor and it didn't function. Had to wait 8 minutes so I could do a regular restart. Next restart got cursor which moved but didn't function.
Restarted in Testing HD partition, desktop came up right away but the cursor was frozen in lefthand corner for the usual 8 minutes. Waited again so I could do a regular restart.
Restarted in original Macintosh HD Partition. Desktop screen up right away but no cursor or beach ball this time. 8 minutes later cursor appeared and was working.
Please note, I did not force quite on any of these restarts.
By installing Mt. Lion in the Testing Partition, AppleCare wanted to find out if it was a software problem or a hardware problem. I'm waiting for them to call back, but since the problem happens in both the Macintosh HD partition and the Testing HD partition, it appears to be a hardware problem.

It is pretty much over my head.

Any app that requires direct user involvement, unless it is used first thing every time the computer is usedI would remove from the list, like Fetch, Mail, Safari, and maybe Dropbox. (I don't use it, not certain what the app does.) If start up speed is not an issue, then ignore this paragraph.

Everything stays frozen in place for at least 8 minutes.

Relative to your hardware, your apps, your set up, and how the Mac was last shut down. The more apps you have on your computer, any computer, the longer it takes to boot up. It has to check all the stuff the other apps have installed here and there. You're is relatively new, but how many apps have you installed on it. Closer to ten or closer to a hundred? And how CPU intense is each one? How big a library does each keep and access?

You will notice that I do not have any email app or browser in the list, even though they get opened every day. They just slow down the start up. Mail.app takes I guess another 60 to 120 seconds to open and get my mail before it will allow me to use it. The various browsers I use take varying amounts of time to be useable. When I open Bento, it takes closer to 3 minutes to open its library databases. And I have only about a dozen that I have created and they are not all that big.

Barbara,
If you are troubleshooting, then do one thing at a time and then check how it worked. If you do multiple things, then you can not narrow the problem down. If you are working with AppleCare, THEN STOP FOLLOWING MY INSTRUCTIONS, but do tell them the answers to my questions.
And again, I ask questions so I can get answers, not to hear myself type. I am not having a power trip, I am trying to narrow down the problem. If you do multiple things at once, I can not narrow it down. If I were Apple and I had a third party, like me, advising the customer, you, to do some things, I would get very frustrated. Apple is the one that ultimately has to try to fix it for you, but if I uncover some info like you were using Norton, Apple will want to know to get you fixed faster. Not telling then is like telling your doctor over the phone, "Doc, I have this terrible pain in my chest." and not telling the Doc, you were in a bad auto accident, and it is the bruise from the shoulder strap. The doc may think you're having a heart attack.
Please answer my questions, but also keep AppleCare informed as to the answers, also. Give them my questions, and your answers.
*** What version of Norton Utilities were you using?
*** Is it _actually_ Norton Utilities or another of their products? <--- This is an important question. *****
*** How did you remove Norton Utilities, just delete it, with Norton's uninstall app, or with a third party app?
*** What was the last version of OS X you had on your 2007 iMac, before you migrated to your 2012?
*** Are you and AppleCare going to talk again, or are you done with AppleCare for now?
Until AppleCare is done with you, do not do what I might suggest, other than answer questions. Let Apple direct you for now, but tell them about Norton. *****
If it is in fact Norton Utilities, then you need to read the Wikipedia page, since I can not find this info on the norton.com site:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norton_Utilities#End_of_life
Basically, "In 2004, Symantec confirmed it had stopped developing Norton Utilities for Macintosh and Norton SystemWorks for Macintosh, and concentrate its efforts solely on Internet security products for the Mac.", and "8.0.2 added support of G5 model Macintosh released before December 2004, 1.25 GHz eMac, and various Mac G4 notebooks. However, some tools may present errors when running Mac OS X 10.4."
Since you migrated Norton Utilities over from your 2007 iMac to your 2012 iMac, I am guessing you always had these freezes on your 2012 iMac, since the original OS that comes with it is 10.8.2.
In regards to your "Please note", if you are speaking of the 8 minutes, refer back to the list of reasons I gave about why you might encounter a long restart or start up time. One of which was changing which drive you are booting from.
Also it may just be voodoo, but when fixing things, I do not use restart, I shut down, wait a moment, and then do a start.
I should have phrased that bet as, if you properly remove Norton... Since the last update to Norton Utilities was around 2004, it probably needs Rosetta and that is the freeze or hang. A scheduled Norton operation tries to start up and can not, because 10.8.2 can not use Rosetta.
Let me guess the 2007 was running 10.6, right?
You might not be able to use a Norton uninstall app, if it needs Rosetta.
Remember, one thing at a time, and listen to Apple over me.

I second this. It's a great extension.
Each time you open Safari a page opens up with each of the dates you opened Safari -- called sessions. Each of those sessions contains each page and tabs that were open at that time. You can restore entire sessions, or open any single page or tab, or delete sessions, pages & tabs from the sessions history.

While not stated explicitly, I presume the link titled "Download" is for Safari 6 compatible version. A Safari 5 version is linked below on that page.
Cheers,
Dave

I just received this from the author of Sessions Extension:
"The version from the main Download link (Sessions version 1.3.0.2) is compatible with any version of Safari 5.1 or greater, on any OS. The older version linked below that on the page is compatible only with Safari 5.0.x."
FYI.
Cheers,
Dave

I never knew that "Sessions" existed. Thanks for the tip, Jim. I downloaded it and am using it.

I just did an experiment. I had a couple windows open, and I "accidentally" on purpose closed one. Then I did the command+Z key combo and it came right back.

There is no such thing as "idiot proof" unfortunately.
The more "idiot proof" one makes things, the smarter the idiots seems to get at breaking them!

So I downloaded Firefox, tried a Youtube link and got the following message:
"The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading."
What's next?
