WhatsApp 2.10.1 for iOS (iPhone screenshot 001)WhatsApp 2.10.1 for iOS (iPhone screenshot 002)

WhatsApp, arguably the most popular cross-platform chatting solution, has just gone free on the App Store. We’re not sure whether the move is part of the upcoming iOS subscription switch or if there was a change of heart.

Either way, we’re not complaining. Previously a 99-cent download, WhatsApp for the iPhone and iPod touch is now provided free of charge (jump past the fold for the fine print).

In addition, the app’s been updated with the much-needed ability to back up your chats to iCloud so you don’t loose your chat history upon reinstalling WhatsApp. Other changes in WhatsApp 2.10.1 include support for URL schemes and the ability to send multiple photos at the same time…(...)

Stop-motion vid pays homage to retro gaming using iPad mini and Nexus 7 components

Posted: 16 Jul 2013 04:03 PM PDT

iFixit retro gaming tablet video

Over the years, repair shop iFixit has torn apart hundreds, if not thousands, of mobile devices so the world could understand how these things are made, and more importantly – how our gadgets fare from the repairability standpoint.

Today, the iFixit blog is highlighting something completely different, a cool stop-motion animation by Martin Spengler and German ad shop LAB BINÆR.

The charming video is well worth a watch: it’s a clever homage to retro gaming that uses the disassembled iPad mini and Nexus 7 components to build levels reminiscent of some of the widely popular old-school games…(...)

WSJ: Google seeking game-changing live TV Internet service

Posted: 16 Jul 2013 03:11 PM PDT

Google TV teaser 001

I know, I know, Google runs the world’s greatest video streaming machine, YouTube, so why wouldn’t networks broadcast live TV there, no? Not so fast.

For starters, Google might be interested in marketing a rumored live TV Internet service separate of its other offerings.

Let’s also not forget Apple hasn’t had much luck persuading networks to license TV channels directly instead of going through operators.

Be that as it may, the search giant is said to has been months into negotiating an over-the-top video service that would let customers stream live TV programming over the Internet, in turn totally bypassing cable operators like Comcast and Time Warner Cable.

There’s no question cable-cutters should have a field day when, and if, Google’s live TV becomes a reality…(...)

iphone_5_box_header

The iPhone, Apple’s wildly successful smartphone, is coming up on a significant milestone. The handset is about to pass another one of the Cupertino company’s wildly successful products, the iPod MP3 player, in all-time sales.

The achievement was noted on Twitter this morning by Ender’s analyst Benedict Evans, who pointed out that with cumulative iPhone sales at 356 million units and lifetime iPod sales at 375 million, it should happen this quarter…(...)

AllThingsD confirms July iPhone 5S production, new mid-tier iPhone variant

Posted: 16 Jul 2013 01:10 PM PDT

Fingerprint scanning 002

The-not-so-reliable analyst Peter Misek made rounds last week convincing clients that mass production of the iPhone 5S was about to start later in the month, in time for a late-September or early-October launch.

Misek’s mixed track record and another surprising claim of his – that Apple has already begun production of a rumored lower-cost iPhone – led us to file the report under the ‘Unlikely’ drawer.

But the story unexpectedly grew more legs today as AllThingsD, the respectable blog owned by the credulous Wall Street Journal, independently confirmed that this is indeed the case…(...)

Here’s why Apple dropped the ball in Russia

apple store russia

Russia is one of the BRIC countries mentioned alongside Brazil, India and China as areas where demand for smartphones is increasing rapidly. Yet, recently, the last of Russia’s big-three carriers stopped selling the iPhone, leaving it up to resellers and Apple’s new online store to meet demand.

Why are Russian carriers saying no to the iconic handset – and adopting competitors, such as Samsung and Microsoft? The answer could be as simple as 1-2-3…(...)

Add a standalone calendar widget to Notification Center with ‘CalendarX’

Posted: 16 Jul 2013 12:08 PM PDT

CalendarX Featured

CalendarX is a recently released jailbreak tweak that serves as a widget for Notification Center. It’s a very interesting tweak that can be enabled by using the standard Notifications panel in the stock Settings app. The thing that makes CalendarX so unique is that it is a standalone self contained calendar app that doesn’t rely on any outside functionality. In fact, none of the calendars or events that you setup within CalendarX will be displayed in the stock Calendar app or vice versa. Again, think standalone here. Depending on your outlook, that could be perceived as either a positive or a negative. Have a look past the break as I go more in-depth with CalendarX on video.(...)

Microsoft turns Outlook Web App into a native client for iPhone and iPad

Posted: 16 Jul 2013 10:24 AM PDT

Outlook Web App for iOS (teaser 001)

Despite the ongoing iPad-bashing in television commercials, Microsoft over the past month has managed to release brand new Office 365 for iPhone (check out our review) and SkyDrive Pro apps, while revamping and enhancing a cross-platform note-taking software, OneNote.

Today, the Windows giant has added another productivity app to its stable of App Store offerings, the Outlook Web App for iPhone and iPad.

Despite what the name might have you believe, it’s a native app. The software offers the same email, calendar and contact functionality you get in Outlook Web App on the browser, “but with additional capabilities that are only possible through native integration of the app with mobile devices,” such as notifications, Microsoft argues…(...)

Audiofly headphones are your new favorite pair [review + giveaway]

Posted: 16 Jul 2013 10:20 AM PDT

AudioFly splash image

Always on the hunt for the perfect pair of headphones, I spent a lot of time at CES digging around with audio companies that made iPhone compatible options. I noticed Audiofly received a CES 2013 Design and Engineering honor and made it a point to stop by the booth. That visit may have been my best choice of the whole show.

Before going any further, I will put my disclaimer in the introduction. These are probably the best earbuds I have ever had the pleasure of using, or reviewing. To prevent everyone from thinking I am getting paid by Audiofly for this review, these are my honest and open opinions, as always. I receive no compensation from the company for my posts, merely the media sample. If you are further concerned, I suggest you read our official review disclaimer.

Moving along, these are extremely impressive earbuds. I am shocked at their balance, tone, clarity and high profile design. Take a step inside for a gushing review of the AF78‘s by Audiofly. Most importantly, I present to you one of the best giveaways on iDB. To help one of you experience the incredible sound, I worked with the company to provide a giveaway model of the AF78′s. Headphone connoisseurs rejoice…(...)

PrimeSense dismisses Apple buyout chatter, Intel buys perceptual computing startup Omek

The Israeli newspaper Calcalist in late-2011 accurately reported on Apple’s $500 million purchase of the Israeli Flash memory startup Anobit.

Yesterday, the paper claimed Apple had been mulling buying PrimeSense, the motion control specialists behind the original Kinect motion sensor for Microsoft’s Xbox console.

It now appears that any such talk could be premature as an unnamed source associated with the motion-gesture startup debunked the rumor in an interview with TechCrunch…(...)

Popular private taxi service Uber updates iPhone app with fare splitting

Uber (fare splitting, iPhone, three up)

Users of Uber, the popular private taxi service that operates in 35 cities and fourteen countries, can now use the updated version of their iPhone application to easily split fares in-app with their friends. I use taxi pretty regularly and while Uber doesn’t operate in my area, our own Jeff Benjamin is ecstatic about the service, having confirmed it works as advertised (at least in the Chicago area). What’s best, billing associated with fare splitting in the new Uber version 2.8.6 is now social, too…(...)

Apple patents turns iPad into virtual CAD toolbox

Apple CAD patent (drawing 001)

Apple Tuesday was granted a patent on a way to return some of the simplicity of traditional drafting and design to the rather complex process of Computer-Aided Design, also known as CAD. Entitled ‘Virtual drafting tools,’ Apple outlines how a multitouch interface – such as the iPad’s – can make more intuitive tasks like drawing a straight line.

To revive the traditional drafting interface, the 2010 patent application approved by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the multitouch interface uses tools such as rulers and protractors…(...)
