Yes, the problem is completely solved. The Apple tech said that forcing a shut-down and unplugging for a period of time, then plugging back in and restarting, resets something.
Carol
Did the AppleCare instructions completely cure the problem? In other words is it the frozen cursor after restart problem gone for good?

No the keyboard does not work when this happens. I tried the keystrokes you mentioned and they do not work when the cursor is frozen at startup. This method didn't work with either Apple or my other keyboard. Pressing and holding the power button works.
Unplugged
Pressed power button 2x's
Plugged back in
Waited 10 seconds
Restarted
Cursor frozen in place even though programs launched I could do nothing with them
Repeated but at restart held down the Option, Command, P & R
Chimed 2x's
Released
Instead of a cursor it was briefly a spinning beach ball. Then the beach ball quit spinning and stayed that way but I could move it around. During this time nothing worked.
5 minuted later the computer went to sleep. Power Computer sleep and Display sleep are set at NEVER, UPS Computer sleep is set at 10 min Display sleep at 2 min;.
3 minutes later it woke on it's own and the cursor was back and working.
In all it took 8 minutes for the cursor to start working again.
I have 10 Login Items listed in Users & Groups.
Tried Safe Mode. When the login screen came up I was unable to type in the password because the cursor was frozen and keyboard did not work. This made me think it was the keyboard since I don't us an Apple keyboard. I connected up the Apple keyboard but problem stayed the same.
Every time the cursor freezes like this it takes EXACTLY the same amount of time to start working 8 minutes. Plus this only happens when after the computer has been on for a while and then is restarted. It has NEVER happens when the computer is turned off and then restarted a few hours later.
Any other suggestions?

Then restart.

That's four keys (in other words, hold Apple and Option and P and R simultaneously). Yup, it requires two hands. Hold these down until you hear the boot chime and continue holding until you hear the chime a second time, THEN release and let the system continue booting.

Fairly new to Mac. How can I put a copy of all my photos from iPhoto to a flash drive, as a safety backup? I know that once I plug in the flash drive it will show up on the screen. So what do I then do to get the photos in it? Too many to drag individually.
This is actually a second backup just for photos since I do have an external hard drive backing up with Time Machine.
Thanks.

Just copy your iPhoto library to the USB drive.
That copies everything.

Since I have no idea how many pictures you are talking about, nor do I know what size each picture is, I caution you that one flash drive may not be big enough to hold all of them. All of this depends on the size of the flash drive you have, the size of the pictures you are coping to the flash drive.
If the pictures are in a folder, just drag that folder to the flash drive and hope that the drive is large enough. It will tell you if it is not and so you will have to split them up and put them on another flash drive(s). The other method of transferring in bulk is to get all the pictures on the screen and high light a good number of them. After high lighting them, put your curser on one of the high lighted pictures, click and hold and then drag all of the high lighted pictures to the flash drive and then let them go by un-clicking.

Very true, but it is trivially easy to find out how much free space the
flash drive has, and how big the photo folder or library is, using Finder >

Occasionally I go to hit "back" or the yellow button on a Safari window, but accidentally hit the red button on the window. Until a year or so ago, I would see a warning message "You will be closing four tabs, do you want to continue?" but now the window just closes and I lose my tabs.
How can I get the warning message back? Firefox has it, but I can't find it in Safari preferences or Mac preferences. adTHANKSvance!

This is a feature I miss but I haven't found a way to reinstate it either.
Remember that you can get all windows/tabs back the next time using History

If you want to avoid using the back/forward buttons, you can use the
shortcuts
cmd-[ and cmd-]
(those are the square brackets.)

In Safari 5.1.6 it's under Safari Preferences > Tabs > Confirm before
closing multiple tabs or windows.
I'm grateful for the warning, even though it's an extra step when I
really do wan to close the window with all its tabs.
