Gone free: Dead Space, Flight Control, Mirror’s Edge, Peggle and Sims Medieval

Dead Space for iOS (iPhone screenshot 001)

If your favorite game isn’t on the list of top iOS apps Apple gave away as part of its ’5 Years of App Store’ anniversary promo, Electronic Arts has you covered.

The super publisher is giving away several of its premium iPhone and iPad games that normally cost anywhere between 99 cents to ten bucks. Specifically, they’ve slashed Dead Space, Flight Control, Mirror’s Edge, Peggle and The Sims Medieval to zero bucks.

The promotion is in support of the App Store turning five earlier this week, valid for a limited time only.

These titles have been on sale for five days now sou you’ll want to download them before the price goes up again (likely on Monday). I’ve included iTunes download links right below…(...)

Strap-E iPhone case carries your cash, credit cards and more

strap-e

I’ve long been in search of a proper wallet-iPhone case combo that would allow me to leave my conventional wallet at home. I’ve tried the BookBook, the HEX and several others, but have yet to find one that met my requirements for form and function.

This new Strap-E case looks interesting though. It’s a slim (only adds 3mm to your iPhone) plastic, slide-on case that has durable, injection molded loops on the back that allow it to carry cash, credit cards and almost anything else you can fit in your pocket…(...)

As Apple fights to stay a recently-imposed import ban on some of its iOS devices, Microsoft is trying to push one forward. The Redmond company is suing the US Customs and Border Protection office for refusing to enforce an ITC order to block imports of Motorola phones.

In May 2012, the US International Trade Commission issued a ban on Motorola devices for infringing a Microsoft patent on syncing calendar events with other computers. The suit alleges Google has held secret meetings with US Customs, convincing the office to ignore the ban…(...)

Report: Apple hiring aggressively to tackle iWatch design problems

iWatch cocept (Martin Hajek, MacUser April 2013 issue 011)

According to people familiar with Apple's wearable technology roadmap who spoke to Financial Times, the company is in search of “fresh expertise” and has begun hiring engineers "aggressively" to help with the rumored smartwatch project.

Now, Bloomberg said in February Apple had tasked 100+ engineers with iWatch work.

According to one source who spoke to The Financial Times on the condition of anonymity, the project has faced "hard engineering problems that they've not been able to solve", prompting the leadership to look for outside help…(...)

Tangent transforms your photos with shapes, colors and other effects

Watch out Instagram, there’s a new photo editing app out that uses one-tap effects to enhance photographs taken with the iPhone. It’s called Tangent, and it promises to transform your photos into amazing works of art.

The app doesn’t use your typical filters though—you won’t find Earlybird or X-Pro II here. Instead, it uses scalable shapes, color fills, light blends and other effects to allow you to customize your photos like never before…(...)

Wallpapers of the Week: iOS 7 Photo app icon-inspired wallpapers

Colourwall iPad 1 splash

The second in a new series, we are answering the call of our dedicated iDB readers. The “Wallpapers of the Week” section is posting, you guessed it, every week to satiate the thirst for fresh wallpapers on a regular basis. We had a great response to last week’s post, which featured photographer @Solefield.

To re-explain, the section will feature two images per week for a specific iOS device. Finding quality images that are formatted for all devices is quite rare and we would rather provide two excellent choices each week than cram in some less desirable options…(...)

Seagate Central: a great storage solution for your Connected Home

Posted: 14 Jul 2013 08:00 AM PDT

Segate Central splash

Always moving forward, Seagate continues to reinvent current solutions. This time, Seagate took a hard look at their previous NAS drive, the GoFlex Home, and decided it left a few things to be desired. In an effort to impress, Seagate tore down the Home and seemingly started from scratch on the Central.

Overall, I am fairly impressed with Seagate’s changes to the new hardware and corresponding software, online dashboard, and revamped media app. After speaking with the engineers behind the drive at CES, there appears to be a more prevalent focus on user experience with the new 2013 product line, of which I previously reviewed the Wireless Plus. Leading the charge for a user friendly product, this previously complicated network drive enables even novice users to go from box to operational in less than ten minutes…(...)

PhotoNova 2 gives you a powerful collection of mobile editing tools

PhotoNova 2 1

I take a lot of pictures. I always have. I'm not a professional. I just like keeping visual representations of my memories. When I got my first iPhone, I was excited to see how many image-altering apps were available in the App Store to help turn my otherwise-mundane vacation photos into something special.

Now, there are so many photo editing apps that it is hard to weed out the good from the bad and find interesting and innovative ones.

PhotoNova 2 is one of those special apps that offer something a little bit different than your typical photo filter app. With it, you can add effects to specific areas of a picture, giving you more control over how you manipulate your images…(...)
