When I clicked on this link, I got a "Phishing Alert" warning, so I went no further...

I looked at it as a side item in mail and it looked a little fishy to me from the beginning. I would like to know who this BTC Admin is also.

A recent joiner, yesterday, who is now on moderation; probably will be
removed soon.
Good catch, Sandy & Forrest!

For a long time I've been concerned about viruses via Adobe updates so I haven't done them when a notice flashes on my screen. This was certainly not a regular occurrence, maybe once every 6 months a stray Adobe update screen would suddenly appear. It happened again yesterday as I was simply accessing Amazon home page. There it was - Your Adobe Reader needs to be updated - (something to that effect).

I checked out some links on the flash screen page and it all looked very professional so I downloaded it and then it asked for my computer password. Nope. Not going there. I didn't trust it. I trashed the dmg and emptied the trash.

Then I wondered if there weren't some safer way to update the Adobe Reader. I looked on the App store site and saw nothing there. I thought they should have some way to do this from inside the app itself. So I opened a .pdf file with Adobe and sure enough. There it was, under the "Help" button in the top menu - scroll down to the last item in the list and it will check for updates or tell you you're okay.

Just thought I'd pass that on and ask if anyone else has had trouble with Adobe update notices and sneaky things inside them.

Question to you, Bekah, WHY have Adobe Reader on your system at all?
Other Adobe products may have use, but "Preview" does all, and more,
that I need for PDFs.

I guess Adobe came over when I just put everything from my old computers onto new ones - over the years, since 1996.

1. If I should be using Preview, is it already on my computer and how do I change the preferences to use it instead?

2. How do I uninstall Adobe?

Thank you!

Preview has been on every Mac I've had since mid-2007.

Choose the "default" program, Preview, for PDFs, graphic formats (JPGs,
TIFFs, etc.), as you would for any program. To be honest, I've
forgotten since I haven't needed that function for years.
> 2. How do I uninstall Adobe?
See if an uninstaller program is in your Adobe Reader folder. If not,
check out Adobe's site! Good luck with that!

You're welcome even though I haven't given any specifics.

Okay - I found Preview and it looks up to date - How do I get that to open instead of Adobe when I download pdfs? Are there preferences for that somewhere? I don't see them in the Preview Preferences or in the Adobe preferences. If I uninstall the Adobe stuff (8 apps some defunct) will Preview open the .pdf automatically?

I have
Adobe Flash Manager (6/12/13)
Adobe Help Viewer (6/17/07)
Adobe Reader 6 (5/19/03)
Adobe Reader 7.0.5 (10/13/05)
Adobe Reader 9/27/07
Adobe Reader 1/12/08
Adobe Reader 5/11/07
Adobe Updater 11/29/08

Should they all go?

Find a PDF document
Right click on it
Select "Open with" and scroll to Preview
When you select that, it should come up with a requester asking if you want to open ALL documents of that type with Preview.
Select Yes.

Use Preview as your default, for PDFs and the like.

You may also get similar popups for Adobe Flash. If you can not live without it, then to update it, go to Sys Prefs/ Flash Player/ Advanced (tab)/ below Updates there is a Check Now button. It also tells you what version you currently have.

---

Next time you upgrade OS, don't migrate. Copy your data & docs, make notes and screen shots of your settings and prefs for the OS and apps. Then do a clean install of the OS and do fresh installs of your critical apps, and leave all that detritus behind. Yeah it will take a bit of time, but clearing out all that crap will give you some more room and you won't have all that crap to mess up the OS.

Apple has had made it easy for us to just bring all the crap forward. It is time to dump the junk and start clean. Review the settings and prefs as you set them up, you will be surprised at what you will find, since you probably haven't looked at them since the first install years ago.

Instead of moving all your apps, move just the critical apps. Have the other apps ready for install, but only install current versions as you need them. You will find that you have not used many apps in years.

I had to use "control" to open and saw the menu. Then the "Get Info" menu and change the "Open With" option and click Preview. Then click "Use this application to open all documents like this one." It worked - .pdfs now open with Preview and I don't have to worry about the Adobe anymore. :-)

Yes, ctrl-click = right-click. This is the standard way of opening a
contextual menu. If you use a mouse, is it set up for right-click?

Just be aware that Preview will not be able to handle some tillable PDF
forms.

Hmmm, I had a similar problem once but the font colour was white. I was sending mail in "invisible ink" :-) If a recipient highlighted the invisible text it became white on blue and could be read.

In iTunes, with the iPhone plugged in, is there a "DEVICES" listing in the left pane?

If so, move the cursor over DEVICES. Does a "Hide" or "Show" appear a little to the right?

If "Show" appears, click on it.
