It was fine last night but now it's gone. It's turned up but there's nothing. I tested it on YouTube. Nothing. What to do?

I have a Mac Mini, OS 10.7.5.

Interesting. THis happened to my MacBook Air yesterday for the first time, too. I restarted the computer and it came back.

Check System Preferences/Sound/Output and see if the right device is
selected, e.g. Headphones not Bluetooth, and check that the volume
isn't set to zero.

Howdy.

Hal, I don't know what is causing your YouTube problem.

You might try changing your DNS IP addresses to something else like
OpenDNS or running the NameBench utility to see what it suggests.

I think you could also try flushing the DNS cache by using a Terminal
command for Mac OS X 10.5 and above):

dscacheutil -flushcache

I'd also try shutting down EVERYTHING: router, modem, switches, WiFi,
computers, printers on network, any other IP address accepting
devices. Wait about 5 to 6 minutes and then start them up in a
specific order with the first device connected to Internet (usually the
router), then second device (WiFi base station or Ethernet switch if
you have separate devices), then computer, then network printer and
other devices last.

Repower each device but let it set itself up by giving it about 60 to
120 seconds and then go on the next device.

Good luck.

Yeah, they might have video streaming sites blocked to keep bandwidth hogging to a minimum.

Does video on other sites work? ( www.hulu.com , www.cracle.com )

Sounds to me like the RV campground is blocking YouTube.

The campground probably blocks high bandwidth sites. I know I would if I had a campground with a low bandwidth connection.

Well, that makes the issue something different.

I'd try going home to see if YouTube works! :-)

Please accept my apologies for going to AppleCare while still getting help from this group. That will not happen again.

I did preform all the trouble shooting suggestions provided here, prior to calling AppleCare, As soon as I called AppleCare, I informed them of all the previous things I had done. When they called back yesterday evening I then informed them that I had removed Norton Utilities, actually it was Norton AntiVirus, before running the tests between the 2 partitions. They were pleased it had been removed. Unfortunately removing the software did not change a thing.

At this point I am completely relying on AppleCare for their help with this problem.

I originally had Norton Utilities years ago, then somewhere along the way I ended up with Norton AntiVirus. I believe the software was turned off most of the years it was on my 2007 iMac and just forgotten.

At this point Apple has ordered a new logic board and will set up an appointment with a local technician to install the part. On the phone yesterday evening the ApplCare tech also thought it could have something to do with Bluetooth, but first things first. They will try the logic board and go from there.

In answer to your questions. Since I had uninstalled the Norton AntiVirus and emptied the trash, I had to go back in Time Machine to for the information you requested.

*** Version: Symantic Solutions Norton AntiVirus Version 11.1.1 Dated 2007

*** Is it _actually_ Norton Utilities or another of their products: Looks like AntiVirus

*** I used the uninstalled with no problems.

*** Last version on my 2007 iMac was 10.6.8

*** AppleCare said they will be calling on Monday to make sure an appt has been set up by the local technician.

Voodoo or not, I will give Shut down, wait a few minutes, then Restart a try next time. Certainly couldn't hurt!

Thank you very much for all of your help and suggestions, it has all been very much appreciated.

I have gotten this frozen cursor on rare occasion.

Sometimes I have successfully waited it out (like the OS was busy repairing something, and couldn't pay attention to me).

Sometimes I have given up and done a Safe Boot, which automatically does some repair work, and the problem has resolved.

Sometimes a frozen cursor simply means your hard drive is failing and
the needed data cannot be fetched.

Barbara,

There is no reason to apologize for going to AppleCare, before, during or after consulting this or any other list.

I am only a member of this list, no more, no less. And I do not want to discourage anyone from using AppleCare, or asking questions on this or any list.

Just when troubleshooting, trying one thing at a time is how you do it, if you want to figure out what the real cause and solution is. Following directions from more than one source only muddies things up.

I work under the Keep It Simple, Sam principle.

If AppleCare thinks that there is a problem with the logic board, that is possible, and could cause a freeze.

FYI only, Norton AV 11 for Mac is for OS X 10.4.11 to 10.6.8 and is included in Norton AV 12 for Mac is for OS X 10.7 and 10.8. Most AV software is known for slowing or short hangs on a Mac. Norton historically, has been the worst.

The reason I asked specifically how you removed the Norton software, is that some methods do leave behind parts of the software, and those parts can let the problem continue.

Let us know how the new logic board works out.

Take care and good luck.

Brent

When I was installing some computers in a state office in Sacramento CA I learned a new term.

The ID-10-T error. Write that in your sloppiest handwriting without dashes.

You can use that term around most computer users and they have no idea what you are talking about.

As I learned in college fifty years ago you can try to make it "damn idiot-proof" but you can't make it "damn-idiot proof".
