That could be what's happening with mine. I'll try to log out of all APPS that could be working while wi-fi is still turned on.
I shut it off overnight since most messages can wait.

you could always try airplane mode to see if your battery lasts longer.
if you are jailbroken depersistwifi is a great app from cydia
