I assume she does not have WiFi at home in ND. How's Verizon at your place?
Yes, you can get a Verizon capable iPad 2, and I believe Vz has a stand alone, month to month plan for cellular iPad service. Just check the connection fee for each time you turn it back on. AT&T allows the same, but there is a $36 fee _every_ time you start it up. What is Vz's fee?
If it is $10 a month as an addition on a shared data plan, how does that pencil if you left it on all year. Compared to turning it on and off? Compared to a stand alone plan?
Call whichever cellular provider and verify their charges, all of them. Ask about start up fees, etcetera.
I don't know if grandma is considered part of a family plan.

Question: Can we get her the iPad 2 set up for Verizon and leave it as wifi only until May when she goes to ND? Then she'd have my daughter add the iPad to their Verizon account. Dear son-in-law said it was fine, $10 or $20 on their bill (with two teens) will be nothing. It's $30 to add her to mine, it's $30 to add her to her own AT&T (with spotty ND service) - I'll add her to mine if necessary but I'd rather go with my kids' plan. Can it be done that way?

Dear Bekah,
My mother has just sent me her Verizon iPad 2 with wifi and 3G, to sell for her (she bought it, not realizing that there was a difference between AT&T and Verizon iPads -we are with AT&T).
It has almost never been used. It is white, with 64 GB of memory, and is restored to factory settings, fully updated, and fully charged. It comes with the original box and accessories as well as the cover that snaps on magnetically and protects the screen and acts as a stand as well. The cover is lime green.
Yes, you could leave it wifi-only for as long as you wish, and sign up with Verizon when you want to.
We would sell the whole package for $375 plus shipping.
I am about to place an ad to sell it, but would rather sell it to someone I "know" from the list.
Please let me know if you would like to have it. I'm attaching a picture. I have the perfect shipping box in which she meticulously packed it, so it's ready to go, if you want it.

There is no start up fee for Verizon cellular service on the iPad if you sign up on the iPad itself in the general settings.

Thanks, Randy. I reinstalled Macaroni just to stop the console reports. I thought simply dragging off a Pref Pane delelted it from OSX. There must be some script or coding that remains w the original install. I forgot that an installer is an uninstaller as well. Thanks. jr

I have the same scanner which works very nicely. Great software with it. It has own power supply and doesn't power off a USB hub as some of the lower cost scanners do. I like Canon products.

It's worth mentioning that the Canon LiDE scanners are USB-powered, cutting
down on cable/transformer clutter. (I don't know if other brands do this
type.)

The software that came with my 5600F allows me to scan 4-5 photos at once, separate on scanning and actually do some editing - works really well in restoring fading photos. (except in one photo it interpreted a deep brown as deep red.). One can crop before scanning into computer actually. I am scanning thousands of old photos and slides.

In that case you only need to check that the lid will allow the thickest
books to lie flat.

Will it scan pages from books? Some scanners don't do that so well.

When I've tried in the last day or so to use Preview to look at a multipage PDF, it quits on the second or third page and gives me a log listing that seems to indicate a memory problem. I have 8GB of OWC memory modules in the second bank of memory slots on my iMac (2.8 GHz Intel Core i7, 21.5-inch, Mid 2011) running OS 10.8.2.
The log listing shows, in part :
