Howdy
Waiting to board return flight from Albuquerque and read this in TUAW.
Think of the new Hobbit movie.
Lord of the Rings Easter Egg Timeline embedded in Mac OS X.
You can view the full tally of fantastical event dates by heading to your Mac's Terminal utility and typing the following:
cat /usr/share/calendar/calendar.lotr
Once you hit enter, your computer will spit out a nicely detailed list of major dates associated with Lord of the Rings events. If you're not currently near your Apple desktop or MacBook, we've pasted the full calendar of events below for you to enjoy.

Nice. I must make a note to commemorate the Death of Smaug this coming Wednesday.

I purchased a MacBook Pro in August 2012 that came with 8GB of RAM. It is the base model.
For $99, I can buy from OWC 16GB of RAM (and then sell my 8GB).
I just purchased Adobe Lightroom, though most of my photos aren't 'huge'.
I have a platter HD.
I am curious if this is just a waste of time and perhaps if I might be better off buying a solid state drive and then using my internal drive as a back up drive instead.
There is a significant cost difference to doing that (and I have an older, slower back up drive already).
Thanks

A SSD drive will help to quickly start OS X, opening programs even apply some effects and use multiple archives at same time. With 16GB of RAM you can open more programs when apply a heavy effect, but the difference in performance you will be surprise when you change to a SSD drive to a system disk. With 8GB of ram you are still above the "standard" conf. What SSD model you are looking?

I wasn't trying to change it back. I had several people ask me if I knew
how so since this article came across my desk I thought I would share
incase anyone on this group was curious about the same. I actually like
some of the changes. Others will take getting used to.

I use iTunes mostly for daily podcasts.
Will the new iTunes allow me to take 5 or 6 podcasts, drag them to my "Podcast Playlist" that I created in the sidebar, and play them one after the other as is my wont? (See Dan Patrick podcast which comes in 3 segments, as an example.)
Will it let me continue to stream the video podcasts with my AppleTV to my TV?

Thanks, Randy.
For some time now, I have been running both ClamXav and Sophos. Looks like I can ditch the Clam.
BTW, neither AV program has found anything at all.
And I am not surprised that Kasperski, the source of seemingly endless "warning" press releases, is a waste of money.

That's not surprising. There is just about nothing out there right now to be worried about.

I was thinking the same thing.

I'll add my thanks, also, Randy, for the AV testing referral. An
interesting read. Thomas Reed put a lot of work into those tests. I've used
the free Avast AV program for years on my PCS, and for about a year now on
my Macs. It did well in the tests, and hasn't ever caused a problem on my
computers....Jim

It's been 24 hours since I deleted iTunes 11 app and reinstalled 10. No matter what I try, if I use 10 the Apple Store errors and does not recognize my computer any longer. That means my iPhone4 will not sync, except for the basic iOS that came with the iPhone: no purchased apps, no free apps, no music library, no movies, no books, just the basic iPhone4. iTunes 10 works ok if you do not need to sync an iPhone or buy anything from the store.
I have spent 4 hours with Apple Support. Nothing worked, so I ran Capture.app and sent the report to them. Their engineers will look at the reports and get back.
In the mean time, I have reinstalled OSX6.8, deleted iTunes 10 app, rebooted and from a downloaded DMG file, reinstalled iTunes 11. Everything works fine. Store recognizes me again, iPhone4 back to normal.
Waiting for the engineers report as to why I cannot reinstall 10. I hate losing Cover Flow. The 11 interface is too brite WHITE. Hard on my eyes on a 27" screen.
I don't advise anyone installing iTunes 11 until you are sure the interface is what you want. It sucksin my opinion. Will report back.

Thank you so much for this. I use iTunes for listening to books both on my computer and transfer to iPod - I do this a lot! I would be VERY upset if it didn't work right. I'm more than happy with the OS 10.8.2 in general. Except for the Mail program which sometimes burps two posts and I don't see two until it's too late - I type one, get two for my effort. (This is irregular.)
