No, the checkmarks are still available on my My Card when in Edit mode, on my MacBook Pro in Mountain Lion.

When all else fails, I should check Apple's application help system. One little addition to make this happen:
When you send contacts your card, you can select which information to share. For example, you can share just your business phone number and keep your home phone number private.
In Contacts, choose Contacts > Preferences, and then click vCard.
Select "Enable private me card" and then close the preferences window.
Select your card, and then click Edit.
Select the checkboxes next to the information you want to share, and then click Done.
Click the Share button and choose how you want to share your card.
Thanks so much for helping me discover that!!!!

One little (but critical, in the iCloud era, addition); setting "Contacts" preferences to "enable private me card" doesn't affect preference settings on other Macs, nor are there toggles available to enable this customization on the iCloud server or on iOS devices. I've rarely used the 3rd party iOS app "Bump", so don't know if I can customize my own Vcard setting there. Bottom line: you may create a vcard that shares just your business or just your home phones/emails/
Still some warts on this "all your stuff, the way you want it, everywhere you want it" mantra that Apple has us chanting.

Thanks, I will look at the Brother and Canon. The reason I did not consider Brother was from previous experience with a couple at work but they were probably 1990's vintage.
The HP refused to work until late last night when I gave up. Later on all of a sudden it printed a page. I have been afraid to breath on ever since.

While I highly recommend Canon's color inkjet printers for the Macintosh, their consumer-class black and white laser printers are not popular among Mac users.

Can anyone please explain to me how iPhoto, cloud (assuming called iCloud), and backups work? My iPad and iPhone will not backup because I have too many photos in iPhoto. Part of the problem is an album I made with jewelry photographs, there are more than 2000 photos in it. How do I get it out of my cloud so I can backup my devices? I actually have several albums like this that I don't need access to on my ipad or iphone. There is also a slide show that needs to not be there. I still want the photos. If I delete the album will this delete the photographs or just put them back into the events folders by date? I don't want them there either, as they are scattered throughout my events/photographs and it took awhile to get them all into the album. I hope I am making myself clear. On my computer in Finder I have placed all the jewelry photos in a folder called Beads. They are not scattered around the computer.
I created an album called "favorite photographs" to put in the photos I would like to have access from all my devices, but the rest of my photographs I would only like on my computer.
How do you keep photos out of iPhoto but still download them to the computer for keeping? This whole thing is frustrating. I used to use Picasa and liked to make adjustments there. Now I can't even retouch in Picasa, it tells me- "This photo belongs to iPhoto, and is read only. In order to edit this file Picasa needs to copy the files event out of iPhoto. Would you like to make a copy of this photo now?"adding still another photo to my computer!
I also have trouble deleting photographs. How in the world to you get them off all of your devices? I delete from one and it is till on the other. And things I think I deleted show up on my computer in iPhoto the numerous photos of my finger in front of the lens.
I am so confused with all of this. I like access to some of my photos from all of my devices, but it is not necessary that am able to access every photo on my computer.
Thank you for the time and help.
Jann

I use iPhoto to store all my photographs on my iMac.
Others use more professional applications like Apeture or Lightroom.
For my use iPhoto is simple to use if your understand that it is a database like the others. That means when you edit a photo from INSIDE your stored database you cannot alter the original. The app will Save As the altered copy. If you store thousands of photos you may want to learn either Apeture or Lightroom. One of them does not save copies, but saves altered instructions only, meaning you save alot of storage space.
But which application is up to you.
Once you have decided which application database to store your photos, you cannot drag and drop photos in and out, you must Import them, or export them. It's a database, not a simple application for drag and drop. Within iPhoto, I import photos and organize the photos into EVENTS.
To have selected photos show on all devices, if you have room for all you want on all your devices, SYNC all your devices through iTUNES on your Macintosh. In iTunes, look for your iPhone and iPad. Look for the checkboxes concerning SYNC manually. Do not SYNC automatically. Use the check boxes to choose which EVENTS you want to have on your devices share.
You are going to get stuck at first learning how to use a database, but it's easy if you follow it's few mandatory rules about importing and exporting. If you try to open and edit a photo, then expect to find the edited photo WITHOUT IMPORTING it first, the edited photo is there, but it is hidden within hidden database folders.
iPhoto works great for me, but I don't have thousands of photos.

I want to network an HP USB inkjet printer. There are routers that have USB ports specifically for this purpose and before I search out one (probably a used one) I want to ask about the feasibility.
Is there anything more required than to install the printer's driver, hook up the computer to the ethernet router, and plug the printer into the router?
Thanks, and
Happy Holidays,
Dave

I should add that a standard print server won't do the job.
I have an ethernet-equipped laser printer next to the USB printer on a cart. I want to connect to both these using one ethernet cable. So a router with at least 2 e-ports and 1 USB port is required. (A print server would work, but it would have to have 2 e-ports, which I've never seen.)
Thanks,
Dave

Why not just turn on printer sharing in the Network prefs.

Printer Sharing requires the printer to be connected to a Mac via USB and
that Mac to be running for the printer to be available to other computers.
I don't think this is what's required here.

Correct, Otto. OS X Printer Sharing is not the solution that will work for me in this situation.
I want wired Ethernet sharing of a USB printer.
And a print server (a la Airport Express) isn't a solution in this instance: the device needs to have more than 1 Ethernet port.
This is the closest solution I've found:

The reviews by Mac users are not glowing, but searching the 'net results in some successes and instructions to help me.

I'm wary of Cisco/Linksys as they tend not to make any effort for Mac users.
The current AirPort Express has 2 ethernet ports, WAN and LAN. Are you sure
it won't do what you want? The way I see it, it *ought* to be possible to
connect it to your existing network using the WAN port, leaving the LAN and
USB ports free for your 2 printers.
It will also give you Wi-Fi, which I assume you don't currently have.
