No question...I would go for the maximum amount of memory you can get. I put 16 GB in my MacBook Pro and it made a world of difference for me.

For my 2011 mini, from Crucial 16 GB is only $84, so no reason not to max out the RAM...

My attitude WRT such things is to always get as much memory & as much
storage as possible/affordable. Even more so with laptops. Maybe not the
cheapest way to go but by far the easiest and most convenient. Least likely
to lead to frustration & feeling "constricted" later on. I can't always
predict what I'm *going* to want to do months down the road so I'm not into
getting "what will do for now" if I don't have to.
(my $ bank account is better stocked than my energy/
stress-resistance/anti-frazzlement account, especially in recent years
<sigh>)
I don't yet have a MBP but am planning to get one soonish -- mostly as an
entertainment hub w/ iTunes etc. I use Win7 for office-y type work & have
far too much old-stuff & archives to switch it all over even if I wanted to
go up that learning curve, new s/w, etc.

I just noticed the same thing. I switched to Mail, and sent some pictures from iPhoto, and it launched Eudora. I had assumed that somehow or another I just hit the wrong choice in Mails preferences. Ill keep my eyes open.

Totally my thoughts too. There are many things I love about Eudora, and a few I do not like. Searching is a great feature. Others I love are FCC and the ability to queue messages, rather than immediately sending them. Right now, as of just a couple of days ago, I am on Mail, so there is a learning curve.

Try "RCDefaultApp.prefpane" and see if it resolves it for you.
I use MailSteward to manage my email archive, so I've never seen a problem.

I've highly customized Mail 4.6 using QuicKeys. QK has not been updated (and it's been a couple of years since their last update) for either Lion nor ML. But if you're using Snow Leopard or earlier Mail with customizations makes it much easier.
Probably other keyboard hot-key utilities that can do the same as I have done with QK.
I have made these customizations:
Send Mail: Command - (Cmd-dash)
Check Mail: Command M
Open Next Message: Command Up (or Command Down) arrow
Open Drafts / Send / Trash / Spam folder: Command 2 / 3 / 4 / 5
Cancel Activity: Command . (Cmd-period) -- Opens Activity Window and cancels sending or checking mail, etc.
Mark Message As Read: Function key 2
Flag Message: Function Key 1

Everyone really SHOULD have a UPS connected to their computer equipment,
if not also their TVs and other electronics hooked up to the grid.
Our area has weekly power blips and yes, I have a panel-mounted surge
protector, but that does not protect against instant shut-down when the
power goes off for those partial seconds; just enough to have to reboot
the computer, reset the clocks on cable boxes, etc., and to have to
reset all the custom system settings on the various TVs and radios... If
your power goes out, all your cordless phones won't work either, because
the base station needs to be plugged in (at least mine does. While the
handsets will work, the base station has to broadcast the signal.)
As far as checking your power usage, you could inquire at your power
company, hydro utility and even public library for availability of a
watt meter, often free to borrow for a week or so.
I have a fairly simple one I bought last week: it's a Belkin brand,
"Conserve Insight" see at Belkin.com.
I got it a insurance salvage store for $20 after tax, normally retails
for around $30.
You unplug your device, plug the Belkin unit into the wall, then re-plug
your device into the Belkin unit. The display on can be programmed with
your power cost per kw/hr rate, and then it will display your draw, or
usage, as well as your cost over a year, if kept on 24/7. it displays
your $ cost, your Watt usage, or your carbon footprint cost..... so it
really is usefull determining how much each electric device
consumes/costs to run for a given time frame. That will help you manage
your costs accordingly.

I have to say I am confused. Hydro utility? You mean the company or municipal service that supplies you with water? Why would they have such a gizmo?

My iMac does not awaken for TM. You can verify this by clicking on the TM
icon and seeing what happens when your mac is asleep. My understanding is
that there are no updates since nothing is happening, unless you have
deliberately requested for your mac pro to awaken for updates.

starting hourly, daily, and weekly backups? I don't see any options in Time

Sorry, Mike. When your Mac is active, click on the TM icon. Go back through
the stored TM Saves until you see that there are no updates for the previous
hour. Just look at the times on the Saves. You'll see that nothing was saved
when your Mac was snoozing.

I'm inferring that what Donna was suggesting was to let the Mac sleep for a few hours, then click on the Time Machine icon in the Dock to see if backups were suspended during that time. I just did so, and indeed, there were no backups performed while I was away for 5 hours with the Mac pro set to go to sleep after 30 minutes of inactivity.
Now I'm curious about just what counts as activity that would keep the Mac from sleeping. For example, some websites auto-update periodically; e.g., Google News. Some Mac apps have user interface elements that report on what the Mac is doing; e.g., Activity Monitor. I wonder if having such an app running, or an IMAP mail client running will prevent the Mac from sleeping. So, I've just launched Activity Monitor and walked away from the Mac Pro. I'll return in several hours to see what happens.

Thanks for trying to help me, everyone, and offering suggestions. I still
have a few questions, because the problem is unresolved. To recap the
problem, this is an 27" iMac which is suddenly taking 40 seconds to go into
manual sleep mode on OSX 6.8. The shut-down mode works correctly. Only the
sleep mode is delayed.
In a new User Account, the sleep mode functions properly. So somewhere in I
have a non-hardware problem on my iMac. But I'm not sure how to determine
what it is.
Bill, the PRAM has been zapped (thanks for suggesting it, tho).
Activity Monitor never shows less than 84% available, even with 1/2 of my
apps running simultaneously. The User % is never more than 11%. The system
is between 1-3%, and Nice is 0%.
Brent, thanks for the suggestions about the Wake for Network Access, etc
those were already selected properly. I do agree that some application is
causing the iMac to work around a problem with a setting, I just don't know
how to discover it.
Barry, apologies for not being clearer.
When connecting the ext HD clone to my husband's problem-free iMac, I
actually booted the ext HD from the Sys Pref Start Up Disk, so that only the
external drive was functional. The sleep problem continued as long as the
clone was being utilized. I then revisited the Sys Pref Start Up Disk
selecting my husband's iMac drive. I ejected the icons for the ext HD,
turned off the ext HD, and removed the connection entirely from his iMac.
His iMac then functioned properly in sleep mode.
To answer your question about why do I care. It is because this is aberrant
behavior for my iMac. It changed over night from responding to the sleep
command as it should, to having a delay. My concern is that something is not
correct, and I need to have it corrected before the warranty runs out.
The experiment proved that it was not hardware related, but rather, software
related, as did the New User Account with unimpaired sleep function.
I'd appreciate any help being offered.
Donna

have a few questions, because the problem is unresolved.
Donna

Denver Dan, thank you so much for telling me about Onyx. The images I
worked on yesterday and today did not show up again, except for their
title in the folder, where I keep them before posting. I ran Onyx again,
this time only on that folder, and Voila! there they were !
Thanks
Jeannie
