You say "reaching the limites of excel". I have to ask: just what are you
doing? Why do you think your Mac is the problem?

If it's a database, shouldn't you be using a proper database app?

If it's stats, shouldn't you be using R or similar?

(Excel tries to do everything, but it's a *spreadsheet* app, not a true
database or stats app.)

MacTracker lists only one model with that designation:
OVERVIEW
Introduced May 2011
Discontinued October 2012
Model Identifier iMac12,1
Model Number A1311
Order Number MC309LL/A (2.5 GHz), MC812LL/A (2.7 GHz)

There are two later 21.5" iMacs, however.

> Whats better? or is there a better option?

What seem to be the differences between "old version" and "new version" according to your sources?

> 5) What are the biggest problems with a new iMac, especially the MC812LL/A?

A NEW iMac would be a "Late 2012" model, not a "discontinued over a year ago" model:

OVERVIEW
Introduced October 2012
Discontinued --
Model Identifier iMac13,1
Model Number A1418
Order Number MD093LL/A (2.7 GHz), MD094LL/A (2.9 GHz)

> 12) Wheres the best place to purchase an iMac especially the old version of MC812LL/A or is there a better iMac?

Thanks Dave & Jim for backing up my figures. I estimated 42 cents, it changes a couple times a year.

This is probably TMI but some may find it interesting.

On Kauai power glitches are very short, milliseconds long, just enough to force a computer reboot but too short for a CFL bulb to flicker. I got those several times a day the first year I was here. Power is more stable now, a couple glitches a month. I run on an APC RS-700 UPS. Don't know how much power that box uses internally but it has several advantages. Didn't know this when I bought it but in addition to the battery backup outlets there are no backup switched outlets. If the power use on the #1 backup outlet drops to some low threshold the switched outlets turn off. My monitor, scanner, speakers are totally off when the Mac Pro sleeps.

I grew up in Minnesota, the land of ten thousand lakes & the ten thousand thunder storms. Learned to unplug everything quickly, used a three foot scrap of PVC pipe with a hook on the end. I had to wait six and a half years for the first thunder storm here on Kauai. The Grinch hit three weeks ago. I got every expensive thing unplugged, without my insulated hook. The storm took out a bedroom clock ($12) and LED christmas lights ($100) & timer ($25) outside. AND one bulb in a light fixture at the top of a vaulted ceiling. That was like a police flash bang going off. Couldn't see anything for a couple seconds and ears ringing for probably ten seconds.

The neighbor across the street had some damage in the meter box, and the power company spent several hours with an underground cable crossing the street just a hundred feet from me.

Don, Dave & Jim,

Those rates are eye-openers. I don't mean to rub it in, but I am thankful for the BPA, who was established to keep the rates down in the Pacific NW. In metro-Portland I have been paying under 10-cents, and I thought the national average was about 11-cents.

HI & RI need more wind turbines. Wind is cheaper than diesel, and takes up a lot less land than solar with higher production rates.

Hurricane Sandy was nearly the first major storm -- hurricane, blizzard, or plain ol' thunderstorm -- in many years in which we did NOT lose power.

Some years ago our local utility offered a whole-house surge protector, attached to the meter, for $6.50/month. It comes with a $10,000 insurance polity.

The ground strike that killed our driveway alarm, DISH network receiver, and dishwasher motherboard was just before that....

They're going up for Block Island, and are expected to drop their rate strikingly.

My spreadsheet is a couple of months behind, but my numbers indicate that the previous year cost me a net of 6.2¢/kWh -- 43% of those kWh from the grid, at 16.4¢/kWh, and 57% from my roof PV installation (counted as 0.0¢.kWh).

Thank YOU, Daly. Maybe if we flood them with the same request they'll realize it's a useful idea ;-)

I have a mac mini I-5 multi core. I have read in a whole lot of postings and sites that the mac mini, can use 16 gig of ram,not just the 8 as stated by apple. First is this correct? second is the additional 8 gigs of memory going to make a big or even a small change in the mini operation. What will be affected the most?
thanks

This will affect if you use a lot of programs at same time. Helps After Effects to make more quickly and responsive. If you use Final Cut Pro X, the performance will be increased. I read a lot of this stuff, which says, the Mini supports 16GB of ram. Actually i think this waste of money, 8GB is sufficient to work with Mini.

Happy new year

Tried doing a backup and received the following message -

Backup is too large for the backup disc.

I am trying to backup 154GB of data - message says only 107.9GB of free space is available

Isn't TM supposed to delete the oldest files if sufficient space is not available.

???

Depends on the settings. Double check yours. What you say IS the default, but maybe you have changed it?
