Using SnoreLab is as easy as entering the monitoring mode and placing the iDevice face down on a nightstand near the sleeper. It is recommended that the device remain plugged in to its AC adapter. When the user wakes, he or she ends the monitoring session by touching a button. SnoreLab displays a graph of the subject's snoring through the night, showing the number, duration, and severity of snoring episodes. This provides the user with an objective, scientific, graph, which can be used for comparison with other graphs saved over time.
Actual recorded snoring sounds made throughout the night are also available for listening. Beneath the graph, the app displays the following: what time the subject went to bed and what time he or she woke up; total hours and minutes monitored; time spent snoring in hours and minutes and as a percentage of total time asleep; Snore Score, the app's own comparative measure of snoring intensity, where a score of 100 puts the subject in the top 10% of those with the most severe snoring problem, a score of 50 ranks in the 65th percentile, and a score of 25 in the 40th percentile (50% of the general population earn a Snore Score of 34 or lower); and a notation of any remedies or special factors that may have influenced the graph and score.
SnoreLab includes a comprehensive list of remedies that may be helpful in reducing snoring. Users may tap one or more items in the list prior to a monitoring session, so that information is included in the Night Analysis window. For each of the 10 remedies listed, there is a brief description of its proper use and those most likely to benefit from its use. The app also allows users to enter their own remedies into the list. The scrolling list of Remedies includes the following: aromatherapy, body pillow, CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure therapy, where the user wears a mask connected to an air pump), mouthpiece, nasal dilator, nasal spray, nasal strip, neti pot, surgery, and throat spray.
Similarly, SnoreLab includes a comprehensive list of pre-sleep factors that may affect snoring. Again, users may tap one or more items in the list prior to a monitoring session, so that information is included in the saved Night Analysis report. The scrolling list of Factors to which users can add custom entries includes the following: alcohol, hot bath, blocked nose, caffeine, exhaustion, heavy meal, sedatives, hot shower, and smoking.

Doctor Asks, Do You Have the Parenting Skills to Prevent iPad Addiction? - Published on 05/01/13
IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Dr. S, eminent psychiatrist and media specialist, today continued his campaign, alerting parents to the dangers of unsupervised use of iPads by kids. Citing a recent headline from The NY Daily News, "Hooked on the iPad: Technology Addiction Affects Children as Young as 4, Experts Say," Dr. S restated his message that touchscreen devices, with their irresistible interactivity, lights, colors and sound can potentially pose serious dangers to the mental health and cognitive development of children.
Wilmette, Illinois - Dr. S, eminent psychiatrist and media specialist, today continued his public health campaign: 1) alerting parents to the dangers of unsupervised use of iPads by kids; and 2) urging the embedding of media management in family life starting at the youngest age possible. Citing a recent headline on April 23rd in The NY Daily News, "Hooked on the iPad: Technology Addiction Affects Children as Young as 4, Experts Say," Dr. S restated his message that touchscreen devices, with their irresistible interactivity, lights, colors, and sounds can potentially pose serious dangers to the mental health and cognitive development of children. He cautioned, "Parents who just hand the iPad to youngsters are asking for trouble, because kids seem wired to love and follow the iPad iPiper, like many eager adults."
Dr. S is confident that preventing iPad addiction and overconsumption of media is well within the skills of modern parents. Recognizing that their children's iPad use requires supervision is the essential first step. According to Dr. S, "Parents need to see the issues inherent in the kid-tech encounter more clearly against a backdrop of child development and brain maturation. They need to believe they can be effective. Then they need to adopt a sensible, systematic and rational system of thinking, much as they do for meal planning, not merely relying on antiquated rules or piecemeal advice. This is not the same as policing, but additionally calls for providing healthy, growth promoting content. Professionals can help parents by providing convenient 'white lists' of vetted content in a technologically protected 'sandbox.'"
In practical terms, Dr. S offers the following advice:
* "Interactive technology belongs in children's lives only if it is balanced in appropriate content and time spent with healthy activities and customized for each child's needs. Parents must prevent excessive, sedentary, lone media consumption by youngsters and favor face to face time and physical play."
* "Be ready to invest extra effort. Paradoxically, technology is not necessarily convenient, but adds to the challenges of parenting, and is not the ideal, convenient babysitter so many parents relish. Keeping kids busy is not necessarily good parenting."
* "Your own attitudes towards media may be obstacles to good example-setting. Parents may already be biased: the same candy-colored, magically engaging, sleekly enticing computing machines invented by our wonderful, most talented, brilliant cultural icons have, admittedly, already seduced many into a dependency. Awareness, self-monitoring, and discipline are hard to maintain."
* "Children need us to remember they are our children. Technology does not relieve us of our duty to kids. They need us to stay in control (or take it back), as we return to sound child rearing principles in all areas of their lives, including the massive area of media consumption. And the younger they are, the more they need our caregiving to focus in this area."
Dr. S is Eitan Schwarz MD, who is board certified in both General and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. For over 40 years in practice face to face with kids and families, he is on the faculty of the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University, and he is a recognized expert in consumption of media by children and families and digital media in play therapy. In 2010, Dr. Schwarz published his "Kids, Parents, and Technology: A Guide for Young Families" and recently invented ZillyDilly for iPad, to transform the book's concepts into working tools for parents and teachers managing kids' media.

San Francisco, California - May is Better Hearing and Speech Month, and The iMums, founded by four tech-savvy moms from four corners of the globe, will feature reviews of speech therapy apps, resources, tips, and question-and-answer sessions with speech and language therapists.
"We want to highlight the apps and speech therapists who are making a real difference in the lives of children who have speech disorders," said iMum Mary Mahon. Mahon has a six-year-old daughter with Childhood Apraxia of Speech, a severe speech disorder where the child has great difficulty planning and producing the series of movements that are necessary for intelligible speech. Three of the four iMums have children in speech therapy, Mahon said. "This is a cause that is near and dear to our hearts," she said. "I first got interested in apps because of my daughter's Apraxia. She was three years old and needed to do home speech therapy practice every day, but she really resisted. The iPad got her interested in doing her therapy, and willing to do her daily practice."
The iMums promotion will start May 1st and end May 14 on the inaugural Apraxia Awareness Day.
