SuperDuper never uses a sector-level copy; it always copies file
by file, and that's the way a backup program should work.

A sector-level (aka block-level) copy of a disk volume with a
corrupted catalog will give you a copy of that corrupted catalog.
If you have a corrupted catalog, you usually don't know about it
for days, weeks, or even months. By the time you realize you have
a problem (usually when you have had a failure of your main hard
drive, and have tried to bootup from your backup) you find
yourself with a hosed backup just when you need it most.

I am looking to purchase a new computer, I thought I would ask the group for comments.

I
currently have a Windows based Desktop PC and Laptop PC and never used
anything else until I purchased the iPhone & iPad. I am considering
purchasing a MacBook. I see that they make a MacBook Air and MacBook Pro.

Here are my thoughts. I am contemplating purchasing the MacBook Pro with Retina Display to use as my Desktop and Laptop, therefore only purchasing one computer. I plan on upgrading each component to the max. Thoughts?

Is there anything that I can do with my Windows PC that I will not be able to do with the Mac?

I appreciate the comments.

If you use Quicken the Mac version isn't as good. You will likely want to have the Macbook run Windows so you can use the PC version of Quicken.

Hi Tony,

I have very little experience with Mac but about

twenty years with PCs and thats why I am writing.

We have just purchased a new Imac. Making a long story

short, its the best move I ever made. Of course there is a lot

of getting used to, price not with standing but if you are

a believer in getting what you pay for, go with a Mac.

Now if your contemplating the Is there anything that I can do with my
Windows PC that I will not be able to do with the Mac? Question

That is almost impossible to answer because its like trying to compare
apples and oranges, they are just not the same.

What I can tell you is this, if you are in love with a favorite
program and cannot find something similar too it on the Apple side

of the street, you may be forced into running a Mac machine with a

program from Apple called Boot Camp.

Apple has this free program available to those of us that cannot find

those types of programs and need a Windows environment to so.

I am one of those people and had a lot of problems with my DVD editing
programs. I now run Windows 7 from within a new Imac. Performance?
Incredible! Alls right with the world.

Make the move Tony, I dont think youll be sorry. Maybe that might
just be the answer to your question. Is there anything that I can
do with my Windows PC that I will not be able to do with the Mac? No
BUT is there anything you can do with a Mac that you cant do with a
PC? Yes, run a full Windows OS from inside of it! You cant run a
Mac OS from inside of a PC! Enjoy!

Good choice. Air is light and the SSD drive is fast, but it is small, and is limited as far as USB ports are concerned. It's also seriously more $$.

If you find something, you have lots of options, starting with Boot Camp, which allows you to specify a windows partition at boot up time [I think that's about how it works].

Otherwise there are 3 virtualization options: Parallels, Fusion [vmware] and Virtual Box [free!]. I am running a Win7 virtual machine under vbox with no apparent problems.

For any of these options, you will need a windows license.

I changed the subject to something a bit more descriptive than "unknown."

I've been a PC user since the mid-80s, although resisted the move to Windows as long as possible (even running OS2 for a while), and finally switched to to a MacBook Pro less than three years ago. I have no regrets. Oh sure, there was a bit of a learning curve (and said curves seem steeper the older I get), but not bad.

As Jay wrote, Quicken and perhaps a very few other programs do not have good Mac versions. For that reason I have from the start been running Windows 7 in a Parallels Desktop virtual machine, and couldn't be happier. I have a Quicken (for Windows) icon on my Mac desktop along with all the Mac apps, and I double-click on it and if Windows isn't already running it will start up and open Quicken. I can copy and paste between OSes at will, use the same files, etc. Virtually seamless.

In June I managed to dump a glass of milk on my keyboard, with the expected results. I took it to the local Apple store and they confirmed it needed to go to a service center. They told me I shouldn't expect it back for two weeks so I did what any of us would do: I bought a new MBP! I was going to buy the same model I had, but the more the salesman talked about the Retina the better it sounded. I didn't care about the higher-quality display (although it is very nice); what sold me was the SSD. When I told him I was running Windows in a virtual machine he said I wouldn't believe how much fast that would open. He was right. I had been troubled with it taking five, sometimes ten minutes to open Quicken on my original MBP. With the Retina, even if Parallels Desktop and Windows aren't already running, it is 10-15 seconds from the time I double-click the Quicken icon until it opens. To me that is worth the price of admission right there!

I can't speak highly enough of Apple in general and the MBP Retina in particular.

Best,

Jim

Yes, Quicken for Windows apparently has better features than the Mac version, but not all users have the same needs.

I have been using the Mac version since 1992 with no problems--it's been a great program for me.

You're absolutely right, David, I should have mentioned that; depends entirely on your needs. The Mac version doesn't do everything I need, but certainly works for many people.

I apologize to the Group for failing to place a topic in the Subject line of my original posting.

So far, it is a pretty overwhelming vote to select a Mac instead of a PC. As I said in my original posting, I plan on upgrading where I possibly can, such as Hard Drive & Processor. Is there anything else that you would suggest?

Also, is there any accessory or external drive you would recommend, possibly a DVD Drive, etc.

Again, I appreciate the comments.

Tony

If you get a MBP, it will not have a standard monitor jack, so you will need an adapter. If you get the Retina, you will still need an adapter for a VGA monitor, but it has an HDMI jack if you have an HDMI-capable monitor.

The regular MBP had an internal optical drive, but if you get the Retina it does not. Contrary to my salesman's contention I still use a CD or DVD on rare occasion, so I bought an Amazon Basics external DVD burner. Inexpensive and works fine.

If you get the Retina and use Ethernet cable for your Internet access you will need an adapter for that. I bought an adapter for the increasingly rare hotel room that has wired Internet but not Wi-Fi.

But thats's about all I can think of, and all of those things are pretty inexpensive.

Best,

Jim

Duh? Look at the group in which you posted this. How many people on the Republican National Committee would advise you to vote for a Democrat, as an example?

Max out the memory.

At least two external hard drives, one for Time Machine and one for a clone. Better would be two clones that you alternate. Your data are the most valuable part of your computer, so that is what you want most to save.

Considering that you can run programs such as Parallels Desktop or VMWare Fusion or Apples own BootCamp, you really can pretty much run any Windows software.

Worry about virus infection?

Seriously, if you don't use any task-specific software (ie, engineering applications), there are apps for your MB Pro to accomplish all you need to do your everyday tasks.

Enjoy!

Thanks for looking for a solution Brent. I looked, too.

I'm pretty sure what I want is in Form Values found in Library ->
Safari. But it's gibberish. Today I found lots of discussions about
decrypting the Form Values and extracting information, but the
discussions were difficult for me to follow and most didn't deal with
editing the Form Values. Finally I may have found something, but my
brain isn't ready for it today:
<http://encase-forensic-blog.guidancesoftware.com/2013/06/safari-form-values-decryptor.html>

And I may never be ready for it. I've stayed away from Terminal for
good reason. But it's nice to know it might be possible to mess with
the form values if it's really, really important.

I decided to delete all my autofill items in Safari for Freecycle and
to start over. I hope it won't be too much work to add back in all
the items I want.

BTW, I'm glad to hear you've joined your local Freecycle group. Have fun there!
