Depends on your goal. If it's to get not-made-in-China, go with something
made somewhere else.

If it's to stay with your current ecosystem, either stay with your current
device (i.e. don't put any more money into China-made) or just ignore where
it's made and get a new iDevice.

Only you can decide on (a) the technical needs/question & (b) the political
issue.

I'm thinking of selling my original ipod touch to a friend; can folks
suggest what to replace it with? Should I stick with ipod or look at
a smartphone or tablet?

One reason I am thinking of switching from Apple is they're made in China.
Samsung is made in S. Korea and HTC is made in Taiwan. They are our friends.
I don't think China is.

ios7 is a free upgrade to devices it will install on.
check-for-updates will tell you if you're using the latest os available for
that device.
*even if* you can't run "the very latest" ios, your device will still work
just as it did/has been doing. You do *NOT* have to buy a new device unless
you want to or want/need something in "the latest".

Jennifer, the new IOS only WORKS on the new devices IPOD 5 being one
of them. you don't have to BUY either the new IOS or the new IPod. If
you want the IOS then yes, I guess you have to buy a new IPOD 5.

requires iPod Touch 5G... look it up.

upgrade is free.
your old iPod Touch will still work, just like it did last week.
You do not have to buy a new one.
