Moving Aperture & iTunes to an external drive

I'm thinking about moving my Aperture and iTune Libraries to an external drive and was wondering if anyone had any trouble in syncing their iPhone / iPad after the move? Any comments or advice would be appreciated.

I've had the libraries on multiple external drives and never had an
issue with syncing. My iTunes library is on 2 separate external drives
and has been for quite some time. No issues.

When I double click a txt file TextEdit opens on one of the files that are "stuck" in the program. The beach ball goes on and on spinning, I cannot close it. I have to right click and force close. When I drag a txt file to it it starts bouncing in the dock, but does nothing.
I cannot find a com.appleTextEdit.plist file. I think I am in the right place as I see lots of other .plist files. I also checked trash just in case something happened and it was thrown away.
Would appreciate any other ideas?

I have several files in ~/Library/Preferences/ that start with com.apple.textedit.....

Mac Mail doesn't send all messages

Posted by: "Jim McGarvie" jim@mcgarvie.us   jgarv2002

Sat Mar 24, 2012 7:13 am (PDT)

OS X 10.7.3, Mail 5.2

Fairly frequently, but a minority of the time, Mail will not send all my outgoing messages. It will send most of them but an occasional message will not go out, and I get the error window titled "Cannot send message using the server Earthlink."

Earthlink is the correct (and only) server. I click on the "Connection Doctor" and it reports success.

I cannot find anything in common with the errant messages. No attachments, no suspect words, not recipient-dependent. I've tried deleting the original message and creating a new one, including adding recipients, from scratch. No joy.

This behavior began fairly recently but I can't tie it into any particular change.

I've scanned the first 100 hits on Google and didn't see any reference to the situation where Mail sends most but not all outgoing mail.

Any ideas what I should look for?

Thanks!

Best,

Jim

Jim;

I've seen similar issues with Apple Mail when I'm on a network that's different than my usual home network. In 3 cases where this has happened (on iPhone, iPad, and MacBook Pro) the solution has been to add username and password to the outgoing (SMTP) mail server configuration.

I've had instances of this recently that drove me nuts until I
realized that, for only one of the people I exchange mail with, just
hitting 'Reply' results in a repetitive, scrambled, email address in
the 'To' address field. I have no idea why this happens only with
this address — the address in the incoming mail is exactly right, but
the address gets completely screwed up in my reply and I have to
correct it manually.

The format of address as received is: <nnnnnn@sssssss.com>

When I reply it gets automatically inserted in the address field as: nnnnn@sssssss.com
> <nnnnn@sssssss.com <nnnnn@sssssss.com>

I expect this is rare, and is not the case with your problem, but it
might be worth checking.

Thanks for that info. It might explain some other odd cases that we've seen in the past.

Thanks for the speedy response, Tim! Tweaking the SMTP server settings seems to have done the trick (so far), but I'm curious about why they would affect some but not all messages. Oh well, I guess I don't have "the need to know."

Thanks again.

Jim;

That still puzzles me too, but I have a suspicion that some SMTP server are so busy that they either only attempt to confirm some percentage of incoming mail or they try to check every message and miss a few. My experience was intermittent and I struggled with it for a while.

Apple TV

Posted by: "Tim O'Donoghue" tjod@drizzle.net   timodonoghue

I'm considering buying the new Apple TV. I wonder if it's possible to stream from the Apple TV - connected via HDMI to the TV and via WiFi to the network - to the iPad or MacBook Pro on the same network. There's plenty of info on how to stream FROM those devices, but not TO them.

Thanks!

No and not sure why you would want to - anything you can stream from Apple
TV you can play directly on the iPad (or iPhone or iPod Touch) from any of
your libraries or online...

In other words Apple TV has say Netflix (so does iPad & iPhone), Apple TV
has access to your computers iTunes Libraries (does does iPad & iPhone via
Home Sharing), Apple TV has iTunes Match (so does iPhone and iPad)...

If you have a specific example of what you want to do, post it and I'm sure
someone can tell you how.

On a related note, at $99 there really is no reason NOT to buy an Apple TV
- especially considering the HDMI cable at the time was something like $39
and had only one function...

Hi Bill;

The main reason for wanting to stream to the MBP is to allow one person to watch something on the regular cable channel while I watch something else on the MBP or iPad in a different room. I'm wondering now if even that is possible.

It is but not through the Apple TV - you can go the 'easy' / inexpensive
route and download the App for your Cable Provider (all the major ones
Comcast, Dish, Time Warner, Verizon, Bright House, etc, etc) have them,
along with all the major networks (NBC, CBS, ABC, FOX, TBS, TNT, CW, HBO,
CineMax, Showtime, etc).

If you want to go the harder/more expensive route what you need is a
Slingbox and the Slingbox App - it lets you see whatever is on your cable
box or DVR over an internet connection anywhere on anything, including an
iPad, Macbook, etc.

I got the new Apple Tv yesterday. I'm not sure I love it more than my old Apple TV. The blacks are incredibly black. I keep thinking I need to adjust my tv picture lighter but I've had it calibrated do I'm hesitant to mess with the settings. All the regulator cable channels are fine. OTOH I probably just need to get used to it. I think the icons are too large and the print too small but that's just my old eyes I suppose.
I like to use apple Tv when I am going to sleep because after the show playing it will go to screen saver and then black all when I am asleep. This set is a plasma screen so that's a nice feature. I don't like set set the tv to go off because if I am just drifting off that will wake me.

Help me understand time machine

Posted by: "James Robertson" jamesrob@sonic.net   jamesrob328i

There's a nice little tutorial on Macworld's website in the last few days that discusses exactly how to find deleted items using Time Machine. I figured I should try this exercise, so I created a two-sentence file in Pages, gave the file a name I knew would be unique, waited until the next hourly Time Machine Backup had occurred, then deleted the file.

A few hours later, I set out to find the file. I thought I'd need to remember where it had been saved and crank back through my Time Machine backups one at a time, looking at that folder in a Finder window until the file's icon and/or name appeared. However, Time Machine is much smarter than that. All I really needed to do was enter Time Machine with a Finder window open, type the filename into the search box in the upper right corner of the window, and Time Machine scrolled back immediately to the appropriate hourly backup. Even better, I could enter a text string from the file contents (in quotes) in the Finder's search window and Time Machine would scroll right back to the same location!

The only niggle I could uncover with this was that, in Time Machine, when I'd Quick Look the file I'd found, it wouldn't glide open, oozing oh-so-smoothly from filename to full page view - it just jumped up on the screen (my 2011 quad-core i7 did a bit better with the eye candy than did my 2008 Mac Pro, but that was still a bit of a surprise).

HOWEVER:

Today, I went back and tried to find the same file again and was surprised that I couldn't. Is this because the file only existed on my Mac for about 2 hours, and hourly backups are only saved for a day? If so, that seems like a huge hole in the backup architecture.

Thanks so much,

Buggy iTunes

Hi guys,

I have the latest iTunes on the latest Lion and I am getting tired of
its buggy behavior. It usually locks my Mac when I'm trying to play music.

I have reinstalled the thing and rebuilt my music library, but that was
only in vain.

I can't seem to find any way to fix it. Have you ever seen this?

Michel

Did you delete any iTunes pref / .plist files before re-installing?

I don't think I'm getting all of my emails

About 3 wks ago I switched to a Mini from my G4 and use the Mail email program that comes with OS 10. I've used it for quite a while. I have the monitor, keyboard and mouse connected with a KVM switch until I get all the new software I need for the Mini. But I can't see that that would impact my problem.

I've noticed recently that I seem to be getting far fewer emails than I normally do. I usually get over 300 a day and I'd guess now it's more like 100 or so. For example, between when I left the computer last night and this morning around 10, I only had 11 emails. I'd guess my usual number for that time would be at least 50.

Also, I've recently emailed 3 people for some specific info I need and none of them have replied. I re-sent one of the emails and still no reply. In the past, I'd have heard back from them by now with nearly 100% certainty.

Does anyone have any ideas what I can do to track down the problem? I just can't see that suddenly the numbers of emails would decrease that drastically for no apparently reason. Lots of my normal emails are from various groups I'm on. I haven't noticed that simply none of the groups' emails aren't coming through.

The volume of email varies, and whether or not someone will respond to
an email or not is not constant.

I seriously doubt you are missing any email, unless you did not
configure the accounts correctly on your Mini, but then you should see
it on your G4. You can always compare it to the emails at the web mail
version of your accounts.

Don't forget that if your Mail.app moves some of the emails to folders
under "On My Mac" it might remove it from your web mail, depending on
your set up and rules.

For instance, let's say your accounts are IMAP and you keep your G4 on
all the time and your Rules move an email to folder On My Mac. If you
later start your Mini, with the same exact Rules, you may not find the
email on your Mini, or the web mail version. The reason, depending on
your set up for deleting emails from the server, once you delete an
email or move it to a folder, it may be removed from the server, and
no longer available to the Mini or web mail.

My guess, it is just a slow email day.

Do you have an email app still running on the G4? If so, is it
automatically downloading some of your mail, which is then removed from the
server and therefore not available to Mail on the mini?

PS, I used to work for a global company. The first thing they told us
about email was not to rely on the recipient responding to it.

If it is urgent or critical, call them also. Send the information to
make a decision by email, but call them to ask them to look at it and
get back to you.

Bookmarkdav_client?

Hello all,
I could use a little advice please. I am running Windows 7 on a Dell laptop. I am using ICloud to sync with my IMac, iPhone, and iPad.

Lately my Dell has been running extremely slow during the first 1/2 hour or so of turning it on. In doing a processor test, it shows bookmarkdav_client is using all but 1.9 gigs of memory.  I have 3G RAM.

What is this bookmarkdav_client, and why is it using all my memory to the point of not being able to run any programs?  Is there anything I can do?

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Sent from my IPad

Ok, so you know that bookmarkdav_client is the part of the iCloud
Control Panel for Windows that syncs your IE or Firefox Bookmarks with
your iCloud-enabled iDevices.

I have no clue as to why it is using so much memory, but since
bookmarks don't change that often, why not turn it off most of the
time and just turn it on every so often?

Yes, it is Apple software, but the problem is how the Windows OS is
operating or how the Control Panel is affecting the Window OS's
operation.

One of the other cross platform members of this list might be able to
give you a better solution, but this is really a Windows, not Mac,
issue.
