I'm still mired in the exploration of Time Machine, and I've been reading another of Joe Kissel's excellent "Take Control of..." books, this one Take Control of Backing Up Your Mac.
Here's what he says about the importance of Spotlight to Time Machine's internal workings:
Time Machine and Spotlight
Spotlight always maintains an index of your Time Machine disk so you
can search in your backups. You may be tempted to prevent Spotlight
from indexing that disk by adding it to the Privacy list in the Spotlight
preference pane, but don't bother. It doesn't workSpotlight keeps
indexing your Time Machine disk even if it's on the list. But this is
nothing to worry about, because Spotlight searches don't normally
display matching items on your Time Machine disk except when
you're on the "time warp" screen.

You can magnify the entire view in Safari. CMD+"+" to magnify. CMD+"-" to make smaller. You may be able to change the display settings in the Yahoo account as well. I've never looked. I only use Mail to read lists.

The problem isn't the message fonts, it's the message list and even
worse the label text in many of the apps. I have my screen rez down to
1124 x768 and even then I have trouble reading.

iTunes update
Posted by: "Budd" n7eoj@yahoo.com n7eoj
Sat Mar 31, 2012 7:30 am (PDT)
Has anyone noticed a degradation in iTunes performance with the latest update. The only thing that has changed on my 10.7.3 iMac this week has been the 10.6.1 update.Previously, any song selected in the iTunes store would play the full 90 seconds without interruption. Now EVERY song plays for a second or two then mutes for a second or two then resumes play and does this several times during the play. Also, most song previewswill stop while the popup says it is rebuffering. That reconnect & buffer is very much like trying to watch a YouTube video on a low speed dialup connection. Stop, buffer, play a couple of seconds, stop, buffer.
Is it just me? Is there a cache I should clear? Is ther a different OS I should switch to?
Advance apologies, for cross posting. This has just become a very irritating change in performance.

It isn't just you. It happens to me all the time too with iTunes streaming of the Old Time Radio shows I like to listen to on various channels. Usually, the "rebuffering" window pops up, but no rebuffering actually takes place. I have to manually close that window and reclick the "play" button. This never happened in Leopard, but is happening all the time in Lion.

No performance degradation in iTunes 10.6.1 for me. Bear in mind that this is on a (theoretical) 30 Mbps cable connection sent to my laptop by an Airport Extreme.
Just listened to several tasty selections from "The Essential Earl Scruggs" to make sure it hadn't degraded since my last visit to the iTunes Store.

So to restore SL, you need a "proof" disc of an earlier version? You can do a full install from an SL disc, but I does want you to prove you have an earlier version, and I think the earlier version has to be 10.5?
Just to commiserate, one of the more heartless things Apple did was to release SL cheap, but exclude a fraction of the population that would want it (10.4 users on Intel machines). AND to add insult to injury, because of THIS, the disc is an "upgrade" and not a full install. If 10.4 qualified, there would be no need for "proof" other than owning an Intel Mac!
Frankly, about the only thing I really want to change at Apple is this deeply... inhuman side. So far, I see many signs that suggest the Tim Cook is significantly more sensitive... empathic... than Steve Jobs (easy), and I like that. I also have to hope this does not dull the edge that makes Apple great. It's tough to tweak without upsetting the Apple cart.
Cheers,
tod

Another approach might be to use ANY Leopard backup to restore. You don't even have to restore everything, just the OS. Then wipe this out with the an SL full install.

It is needed??? Really???
After I purchased 10.6 for $30, I had to call Apple with a problem on my
old iMac. They advised me to do an erase and install using the $30 disc
by starting from the 10.6 disc, using Disk Utility to wipe the system
drive and then starting the install from the 10.6 disc. Worked
perfectly! It is not necessary to have any remnants of 10.5 on the
target disk.
Since then, I've done it again on that same machine using a different
10.6 disc and it worked as well.

I don't have any kind of proof of earlier versions. I have so many disks
that I dumped all the old ones, forgetting the SL is an upgrade. I have
solve the Lion problems but JIC I need a full install of SL.

When 10.6 first came out, I had an Apple tech confirm that the full
install can be done from the $30 'upgrade only' disc. One just has to
wipe the target disc out with Disk Utility to do an 'erase and install'.

Randy,
I have trash it and I will not empty the trash. I chose the one for Lion.
I double clicked, no dice. When I talked to Mac help the guy talked me through
doing it from terminal and that failed too. I have two accounts and one had an empty Trash Bin, so I restarted to that admin account, downloaded Lion again [according to the help guy] and installed Lion. So I tried to delete the ordinary account with the problem Trash but could not delete it.

I seem to have solve my own problem, shows to go ya', persistence pays.
I tried once again to delete the account with the damaged Trash Bin and this time it worked. I think things were so messed up that even TrashIt would not work.
I'm feeling a whole lot better today about Lion.
But I may need to get a copy of Snow Leopard full install J.I.C.
Is this $30 Lion permanent or just a temporary until some official release?

John,
Try exporting from Apple's Address Book the addresses you want as CSV values, if the email addresses are only in Apple Mail, you can add them to the Address Book by going to the Window drop down menu, choose Previous Recipients, select the address(es) and click the button to Add to Address book.

using 32-bit kernel in Lion

I've downloaded a file to upgrade my camera's firmware. When running, it warns me about proceeding if I'm running a 64-bit OS. I've since learned Lion is default at starting in 64-bit kernel mode and that I can get my machine, iMac with Intel Core 2 Duo to run one time in 32-bit kernel mode by restarting while holding down the 3 and 2 keys.
My question is, does that provide any risk of screwing up my beautifully running system?

Nothing is harmed by booting in 32-bit "kernel boot mode.".
Your system will still run many things in 64-bit.
There are some types of drivers and "kext" items that may not work when Mac is booted in 64-bit kernel boot mode because maker hasn't updated their code.
My first generation MacPro tower in OS X 10.7.3 can ONLY boot in 32-bit kernel boot mode but it still does everything else in 64-bit.
