Spotlight isn't designed to search everywhere on your hard drive.
Apple designed Spotlight not to look through folders that usually
contain only files that have to do with system software, for
instance. I assume that Apple did this so that there wouldn't be a
huge number of irrelevant and/or confusing hits when doing a search.

EasyFind looks everywhere on your hard drive. However, since
EasyFind doesn't use a pre-made index it can take forever to do a
search. But if you turn off "Search for File Contents" EasyFind
becomes reasonably fast.

A while back I tested all of the uninstaller programs that I could
find. NOT A SINGLE ONE found every file left over associated with
every application I attempted to uninstall. That said, the Macintosh
is not at all like a Windows PC. Generally what is left behind isn't
stay-resident software that will run and cause your computer to slow
down, or cause software conflicts, or take up a lot of hard drive
space. So you don't have to worry about it. If a program doesn't
include an uninstaller, just drag and drop it into the Trash to
uninstall, and don't worry about a thing.

The exceptions tend to be software from much hated software
developers such as Microsoft and Adobe. But even there, they offer
uninstallers (often part of the original installer program) for their
software, which is what you should use to uninstall their software.

Blaine, thank you for reminding me that I too want to get rid of NeoOffice. All those patches are becoming a pita. Now I will go and get AppZapper. ;-)

i have found AppZapper (not from Apple) and CleanMyMac make a perfect collection. with the two of them, i am 99% sure there won't be any garbage left over.
CleanMyMac is the most thorough. of course, if you are like me, you want it done fast. so, you start with AppZapper, and if there is anything left, CleanMyMac
will pop up and tell you what it is.

sorry, it's late. i meant to say, CleanMyMac starts up only after you have gotten rid of the app you are disposing of, but there is residual garbage. and CleanMyMac gives you to option
to leave it, or trash the residual.

I used to keep my iTunes library on an external drive, but since late 10.6 or since moving to 10.7 I have had some issues. I frequently turn off the WiFi connection between my MBP and the Drobo I kept the library on. Drobo also sometimes goes to sleep since it is connected through my Airport Extreme BS.

If iTunes on you Mac can not instantaneously connect to the designated library it will create a new on on the Mac, eventually causing problems.

I currently use a library on the MBP and move over source material when I want to use a audiobook or music album to sync with my iDevice.

The "sensitivity" to be able to instantly being able to contact the library started up just recently.

This is NOT the case with cabled external hard drives. As I've
mentioned, I've had my libraries spread across 2 external cabled in
drives, and have had no problems with sharing to an iOS device via
wi-fi, whatsoever.

What I have done is to enable wi-fi syncing of the device in iTunes. I
then enabled home sharing on both my Mac and pc under the same Apple
ID. Then, enable home sharing under Video and Music settings in iOS on
the iPad. I then deleted everything local to the iOS device and began
streaming video and audio from both computers to the iOS devices. Saves
a lot of space on my iOS devices.

The downside is, you have to be within wifi range of the computers, or
router.

If you care to, you can set up the 3rd party app, Plex (media server
only on iOS), and server and client on computer. This will allow
streaming over the internet, to any internet connected iOS device, of
any format video or audio file on your computer. No need for iTunes for
this. Plex is free for the Mac and pc, but $5 on iOS.

GREAT alternative!

downloading photos on Mini

Posted by: "Louise Stewart" veggie236@earthlink.net   pudgybulldog

Today I put my memory card in the card reader on my hub to download some new photos. But I couldn't figure out how to do it on my new Mini. I've been using a G4 for years and on it, it's no problem. I still use both computers for now by using a KVM switch, so I had to switch to the G4 to work with the photos.

I looked in the little instruction booklet that came with the Mini to see how to get the photos on the computer but only saw instructions for hooking the CAMERA to the computer. Nothing about using the memory card and reader.

I must be missing something here that hopefully is a simple fix. Ideas?

Is the card reader connected to a USB Hub?

Which computer is the USB Hub connected to?

How do I get rid of a wireless mooch?

Posted by: "Deborah Shanahan" debbys@verizon.net   debbyshanahan

Sat Mar 24, 2012 7:38 pm (PDT)

I never had wireless internet until I got FIOS about a year ago. With
2 other users at home who didn't always want to be tethered to an
ethernet wire, I decided to get wireless service. They love it.
Unfortunately, somebody else is enjoying it too.

Somebody with a computer named npi2ea693 shows up now and then. When
I click on it, it says connection failed, so I can't get to him, but
I'm afraid that he (or she) can see stuff on my computer. That was
something I never worried about before.

How do I get rid of this person? Is there a way to allow people to
share only by permission?

You need to set up password protection for your wireless router. That will require all users to log in with a password in order to have access.
Verizon *should* have helped you set up such protection right on Day 1. I guess their customer support is every bit as bad as rumors say.

You can see this other one because it is not password protected. You
can password protect your router to keep others off.

I have only setup 1 FIOS router as unfortunately it's not available in my
city but the one I setup had password encryption on by default.

Could this be something other than a computer? Like a network printer as
the name hints or some other device like a Tivo, Apple TV, iPad, Roku,
etc.? Try putting the ip into a browsr and see if anything comes up.

If your wireless router is not capable of WPA2 encryption, get one that is, and set the wireless network up encrypted. You should only need to enter the password on your computers once.

A good idea is to set the router to 'not' broadcast it's SSID. In
addition to a password, this is a good security measure as well.

In addition to this, I do set my router to do 'N' protocol only. This
is not a security measure so much as a performance issue, but it does
keep 'G' users out as well, should there be such trying to use your
connection.

Hello Jim,

This happened by me too from the very first moment I started using Time Machine (about one year ago, then under OS 10.5). I did the test again now and the result is the same. Now I'm using OS 10.6.8 on a MacBook Pro 17.

The file is still on the backup disk but it cannot be found be Spotlight (by entering the name the way you describe in your post). I suppose the same applies to your file. Use the program "Find Any File" and I bet you will see it's still there.

As far as I understand this, there must be a bug in Spotlight or the way Spotlight and Time Machine work together.

Could someone be so kind please and verify this?

Anna
