Getting a G4 Macbook to Connect to Airport Network

Posted by: "mpstupinski@snet.net" mpstupinski@snet.net   mstupinski

Some time ago I gave my old TiBook G4 to my granddaughter for high school work. She returned it after getting a MBP for college. The TiBook won't connect to, although it sees, my Airport network.

I finally recognized that since I gave it to her I've updated to a new Airport Extreme and set the network to WPA, rather than WEP, which it had been before. The TiBook Airport Utilities don't show a path to establish a WPA connection. Is it possible to do so with this computer?

Thanks,
..............Mike

I should have added that the TiBook is running 10.4.11.

Are you using the Airport menu in the top menu bar? Is there a Security
option when you select the your network?

I found this, which might be relevant.

"The original 802.11b Airport card had 2 versions, both could do WPA, but
not WPA2, the 1st one needed a firmware update to do WPA."

Yes, I am using the Airport menu in the top bar. I am presented with
a security option, but it only lists as choices:

WEP Password
WEP 40/128-bit hex
WEP 40/128-bit ASCII
LEAP

All result in a message: "There was an error in joining the Airport
network..."

Also, Software Update (reached via an ethernet cable to an ethernet
port on the Airport Extreme) does not present me with any Airport
updates.

I guess I need to update the firmware on my card, because I just use
the method ("other") in the referenced thread and found that WPA
popped up as a choice (as well as WPA2) but using the proper password
resulted in a message that message that my network(?) didn't support
that encryptation method.

Now to find and install the firmware update....

I don't see why WPA would be a choice via 'Other' but not when selecting
your network (router) from the list. You generally only need 'Other' when
your network does *not* appear in the list, such as when the SSID is
hidden. Have you checked the firmware version in About This Mac > More Info
> Network > AirPort Card? Apparently Software Update *should* have kept
this up to date.

Otto,

The thread you referenced earlier (<https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3260817?start=0&tstart=0
>) described the issue of using "other" to get more security options
to show. I don't know why that's the case either — a mistake by
Apple???

Using 'More Info' returns this regarding the Airport card:

Wireless Card Type: Airport
Wireless Card Locale: USA
Wireless Card Firmware version: 9.52
Current Wireless Network: wireless network not available

I can't find any reference to a firmware update or current version for
this card on the Apple Site. The support status given by Mactracker
is: 'Vintage,' so maybe it isn't available anymore.

OK, I guess I've run out of maneuvering room on this one. For one thing, I've found that my Airport network is set up as WPA2, not WPA, and in the following thread it's clear that my G4 Powerbook Airport card will NOT support WPA2 regardless of it's firmware status:

<https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2576180?start=0&tstart=0>

I don't want to downgrade my network security to accommodate this old puppy, so I'll just have to connect it by ethernet if I want to use it on the network.

Thanks for the help and suggestions!

As far as I can see, 9.52 is the latest version available for the original
(11b) AirPort card. This allows it to support WPA, but not WPA2. You
*could* use WPA, with a slight loss of security compared with WPA2. We do
that because, although our Mac laptops and my iPhone both support WPA2, our
Belkin router, an early 11g model, supports WPA but not WPA2. In practice,
I think this is good enough. Bear in mind that many, many wifi networks are
still using WEP, or no encryption at all.

If it's not much loss of security to use WPA vs. WPA2, then that might
be something to consider. Would I have to completely re-setup the
network to do that, or is it a simple task? (I'm certainly not very
network savvy!)

I think so, and it will allow the old PowerBook to use your wifi. All you
need to do is:-

1. Go into the router's admin function and change the encryption from WPA2
to WPA. You can use the same key/password if you like.

2. In each Mac, select your network in the AirPort menu, choose Security >
WPA, then enter the key/password (if it's not retained from before).

3. When all are working, I suggest going back into the router's admin and
choose the option to hide the SSID (network name).

Note that for all intents and purposes, WEP is equivalent to no encryption…. I wouldn't trust any network using this.

I agree: it gives zero protection against any determined hack. It does,
however, provide protection against the casual freerider, or those who
accidently* use neighbours' networks.

Agreed, and this has been the case for some years now. No one who can use
WPA or WPA2 (i.e., *all* of your wifi devices can use either) should be
using WEP.

Thanks, but see the replies recommending WPA or WPA2.

How different is the IP address? Just the last digit, or more? Is it a
local address (192.168.xxx.xxx)?

Try automating your "favorites" with a saved search. Check the folder sidebar and scroll down to the searches. There are already searches for "Today", "Yesterday", and "This Week". Right click (sorry, CTRL-click) and select "Show Search Criteria" and you can see what these are doing. I think you can modify them. If not, you can create your own. You might restrict to certain file types for instance. Any search you create can be saved.

I've use saved searches mostly in Mail. For instance, I have one that finds everything "From" my boss. ;-)

Cheers,
tod

I suspect that I¹m no longer getting all of my email messages using
Entourage for Mac 2008. When the application automatically checks for
messages at a given interval, it displays a message that there are (say)
four messages that will be retrieved. Then, only one is displayed. What has
happened to the other three?

I¹ve checked the Junk Email folder, the Deleted Items Folder, and I¹ve
checked Preferences and Account Settings. I can¹t seem to find anything
amiss.

This is a recent development. Perhaps my service provider (Comcast) is to
blame...?

Can anyone help?

Thanks!

Photoshop CS6 in Public Beta

Howdy.

Adobe has release a public beta of Adobe Photoshop for the forthcoming
Adobe Creative Suite CS6 release.

News today that 500,000 downloads of the public beta have been made.

A public beta is not usual behavior for Adobe new product releases.

The equally important item about the Adobe Photoshop CS6 public beta is
that it doesn't support 32-bit Mac systems. This means it won't run on
32-bit booting Macs and on Intel Core Duo first generation Macs (not
Core 2 Duo, but Core Duo).

I haven't heard yet whether Photoshop CS6 will run on a first
generation MacPro system ID 1.1 Xeon Core 2 Duo Mac tower.

Keyboard Navigation

I have checke my myriad of notes and can't seem to find anything on keyboard navigation within text editors. I have lots on keyboard shortcuts but not on moving around in a doc. Like getting to the top or bottom of a page. I did discover that CMD + a highlights a page and plus s saves a file, in fact CMD works in place of CTRL for lots of things.

I recall having switched CTRL in place of CMD some time ago, but can't recll why I switched back, or how to do it again. Could part of my problem be that I am using a regular KBD instead of an Apple one? I always play the game when asked to ID miy keyboard.

Another problem I have is with the default fonts in places where CMD plus + does not work, like files lists and message lists. My high rez monitor makes the text very tiny,
As it is, I'm using far less rez than my monitor can handle just to see as well as I am.

TNX for any info that might resolve these two problems.

Jim,

You should download these files, or at least the first one, and keep it
handy.

In general, Windows ctrl = Mac cmd, but if you're using a PC kb, I don't
know which key = cmd. Have you looked at Keyboard Viewer to see which keys
your Mac "sees"?

You may choose your message and list fonts in Mail>Preferences>Fonts & Colors, and the text size of file lists in Finder>Show View Options.

Do a get info (command-I) on it. See what kind it is. If it says it
is Intel or Universal it will work. If it says it is a PowerPC
application then it won't.
