Howdy.

You can reformat/erase the Samsung HD as Mac OS Extended unless thee is
something defective about the HD.

FAT-32 is an older Microsoft formatting protocol. It has a number of
restrictions on size of file, length of file names, and the usual
restricted or prohibited characters you can use in file and folder
names.

You can format it as FAT-32 because Microsoft allows this legally.

With the Samsung HD empty of files, use Disk Utility and do the
following steps.

1. In Disk Utility, select the Samsung HD. You should then see
several tabs in the right hand pane. One tab is Partition.

If you select the indented column name under the drive (in left pane),
you won't see the Partition tab.

2. Click Partition tab.

3. Under the words Partition Layout it should say Current in the popup
menu.

4. Clic Current and instead select 1 Partition.

When you change from Current to 1 Partition the Options… button below
the Partition pane should turn black.

5. Click the Options… button and select GUID Partition Table.
Depending on your OS X version GUID may already be elected.

6. Click the OK button. The pane should diaper.

7. Next click the Apply button at bottom right and this will
reformat/erase the HD.

8. After it reformats/erases, you can give the HD a name in Finder.

I suggest that you do do several tests of any new HD.

Do a Shut Down and reboot.

Do a quad Disk Utility Verify Disk and Repair Disk. Select the Samsung
HD then run Verify Disk and next Repair Disk. Then select the
Partition/volume name and again do Verify and Repair.

Do several test copies of files TO the new HD and then do several test
copies of files FROM new HD to a different HD. This is sometimes
called a push/pull test.

I also suggest changing the Ownership Permissins status on the new
drive. To do this select the new HD icon in Finder and do a Get Info
command on it. At the bottom of the Get Info dialog box will be a check
box named "Ignore ownership on this volumn." To check this on you
need first to click the gold padlock and authenticate to unlock this.
Put a check in the box.

Enjoy the new HD.

Howdy.

I recently upgraded my FiOS fiber optic Internet speed to a plan they
name FiOS Quantum. It's 35 mbps up and 50 mbps down.

It's nicely faster.

The upgrade suggested I buy a new Verizon provided ActionTec M1424WR
cable router with Gigabit Ethernet ports and WiFi to replace the older
ActionTec Router. I did get this.

The new WiFi router is supposed to be 802.11 b/g/n speed.

Several of the Macs in the house have 802.11 b/g/n Apple AirPort cards
for WiFi.

Is there some kind of speed test app that anyone could recommend for
testing the WiFi speed between a Mac and the router?

I mean to test the WiFi speed just within the house that is actually
provided by this new router's WiFi section.

And yes, I've checked online and at several app sources and online
speed testing but it is almost all aimed at testing the speed between
router and an online server and not within the house's private WiFi
network.

Thoughts?

Hi Dan,

I haven't seen anything that tests Wi-Fi speed only. What I've done in the
past is timed a file copy between 2 computers, a real-life test. Do it both
ways 2-3 times to get an average.

Of course, your Wi-Fi should much faster than your internet connection but
what do you see when you run the usual kind of speed test? If you see the
full 50 Mbps then you are using 11n, not 11g.
