Yahoo and Apple said to be in talks over deeper iPhone partnership

Posted: 09 Apr 2013 04:47 PM PDT

Yahoo iPhone

It looks like Yahoo could stand to gain from the war that has broken out between Apple and Google. Now that the iPad-maker has cleared nearly every trace of Google from the stock iOS experience (besides web search), it’s apparently in the market for a new partner.

And that partner could just be the Sunnyvale, California-based Yahoo. The web company already provides data for a few iOS apps, including Weather, Stocks and Siri. And according to a new report, it’s in talks with Apple to take that relationship to the next level…(...)

Google talks Search iOS app design

Posted: 09 Apr 2013 04:04 PM PDT

When it comes to UI design, Google up until recently used to make what you’d call Spartan programs, more often than not resembling old-school software your parents might use. What a difference a leadership change makes: after co-founder Larry Page took over from Eric Schmidt as Google’s CEO in April 2011, we started noticing radical changes to how the Internet giant approaches app design.

I think it is safe to say that some of Google’s contemporary iOS apps are starting to look arguably better than Apple’s. But what’s so special about Google’s newly found design language? To answer that question, Google recently uploaded an interesting video to its Life at Google channel on YouTube. The entire clip is dedicated to highlighting how the new app design philosophy lends itself to the nimble, streamlined and interactive search experience on the Apple tablet…(...)

Report claims iPhone 5S coming in multiple colors this summer

Posted: 09 Apr 2013 03:52 PM PDT

iPhone 5S (Martin uit Utrecht 001)

The next-generation iPhone, believed to be the iPhone 5S, is widely expected to land sometime this summer. This, despite the fact that the iPhone 5 just came out in September of last year, and Apple typically waits at least 12 months to update its handset.

And another report is out today in support of that theory. This one comes from the Japanese blog Macotakara, who cites sources familiar with Apple’s plans, in claims that both the iPhone 5S and rumored budget iPhone are going to be announced in July…(...)

How to select a specific song from the Lock screen using ‘Pluck’

Posted: 09 Apr 2013 03:35 PM PDT

Pluck is a recently released tweak that places a dedicated button on the iPhone’s Lock screen for selecting Music. To view the button, simply invoke the iPhone’s music controls by double pressing the Home button while on the Lock screen. Tapping the button allows you to “pluck” a new track from your Music Library, instead of forcing you to unlock the device and venture into the Music app just to select a specific song.

Once the button is tapped, a new sheet featuring your Music Library is pulled in from the bottom of the screen. This sheet can also be accessed by means of an Activator gesture, which is configurable in Pluck’s preferences. Check inside for a few more details.(...)

How to make the iPhone’s Spotlight background transparent

Posted: 09 Apr 2013 02:40 PM PDT

Clear The Air

Clear The Air is a new jailbreak tweak that allows you to adjust the transparency of the Spotlight search in iOS. Options can be configured to adjust the transparency on a sliding scale, maintain the status bar’s opacity, and a general kill switch to quickly enable or disable the effect.

If you’re looking for a tweak that allows you to enjoy your background wallpaper while performing Spotlight searches, then this is the tweak for you.(...)

OS X 10.8.4 build 12E30 seeded to developers

Posted: 09 Apr 2013 02:29 PM PDT

OS X Mountain Lion

If you’re a registered OS X developer, you may be interested in this news. Just a week after Apple seeded the 12E27 beta build of OS X 10.8.4, it seeded this new build — dubbed 12E30. As with the previous build, Apple is asking developers to focus on specific areas of the OS, namely Wi-Fi, Graphics Drivers and Safari.(...)

How to merge live front facing camera video with your wallpaper

Posted: 09 Apr 2013 02:16 PM PDT

If you have an iOS device with a front facing camera, you can use a new jailbreak tweak on Cydia to “merge” the wallpaper image with live video from the device’s front facing camera. Faded Camera Wallpaper is the name of the tweak, and it’s a free download on Cydia’s ModMyi repo. It’s a tweak that will display a faint video feed from the front facing camera, canvased on top of the Home screen wallpaper.

The tweak is exactly as described, and contains no options or settings, which is unfortunate. It might be an effect that you wouldn’t mind using from time to time, but there’s not even an off switch to disable it. As it stands, it’s a usable tweak, but it’s in desperate need of a preference panel to at least toggle it on or off. Without such an option, you have a surefire battery killer on your hands, as it appears that the camera is in action even when not at the Home screen wallpaper.

What do you think?

How to add a Velox style music widget to your iPhone right now

Posted: 09 Apr 2013 01:29 PM PDT

Itching to get your hands on Velox? You’re not alone. In the meantime, you may want to give MusicWidget (velox style) a go. It’s a free jailbreak tweak available on Cydia’s BigBoss repo, that lends Velox styled music controls to the stock Music app.

There are no settings or options to configure for MusicWidget, just install it and go. It’s a tweak that works only with iPhones running iOS 6.x. Once installed, a double tap on the Music app icon will reveal music controls in a style similar to the Velox tweak that we showed you earlier. The Music app can be anywhere on your Home screen, it doesn’t have to stay relegated to the dock.

If you decide to take it for a ride, let me know what you think about it.

AppGratis CEO sheds further light on App Store removal

Posted: 09 Apr 2013 01:23 PM PDT

AppGratis (teaser)

As most of you have probably heard by now, Apple pulled the popular app discovery app AppGratis over the weekend. There’s been a few reasons given for the removal, including notification abuse, but not much else has been said about the situation.

Until today, that is. AppGratis CEO Simon Dawalt took to the company’s blog this morning to talk about the recent removal of his team’s app, and shed some light on what it means for them moving forward. And to be honest, it doesn’t look good…(...)

Twitter’s Vine is now App Store’s new #1 free app

Posted: 09 Apr 2013 12:04 PM PDT

Vine top free App Store app

Here’s a reminder that Vine still exists: just six months after being acquired by Twitter and about two and a half months following its iOS debut, the Vine app is now the number one free software on the App Store. By comparison, Twitter’s own iOS client sits at No. 35.

Vine’s success is no small feat given that App Store charts are normally populated with a bevy of well-known games and entertainment titles which, by the way, command mobile app usage.

What’s more, Vine is a really quirky piece of work: for Christ’s sake, we’re talking an app which lets you share ultra-short six-second clips here. Yet, a bunch of other video sharing programs can only dream of rising on top of App Store charts. So, what’s the secret ingredient Vine has that similar programs lack?(...)

Auxo version 1.4 released on Cydia

Auxo 1.4 toggles updated

One of my favorite jailbreak tweaks of all time, Auxo, has been updated to version 1.4. This release, as we highlighted in our preview of the update, brings bug fixes, new toggles, and additional settings to the table.

The biggest feature in my opinion, is the adjustment that has been made with the tap zones on the brightness and music control sliders. in the past, those slider knobs have been really difficult to key in on with your finger, but after the 1.4 update, this is no longer an issue.(...)

Famed Mac dev Panic teases mysterious iPad app, coming tomorrow

Posted: 09 Apr 2013 09:00 AM PDT

Panic iPad app teaser 20130408

Panic is one of my favorite Mac developers, was even more so in the pre-iPhone days when top-notch Mac apps were somewhat few and far between.

Now, Panic has successfully transitioned itself to the world of concurrent Mac/iOS development, having released a very nice iOS SSH app aptly named Prompt.

And if you’re a web developer, an iPad version of Coda is a must-have. The firm has kept mum on its future iOS releases, but they’ve been obviously working behind the scenes on a major new app. Both a tweet and the Panic web site now tease the upcoming software, with a ticker on panic.com reading “current status: this Wednesday, a brand new iPad app from Panic.”

UPDATE: we think we know what the app is about and you’re going to love it! Go past the fold for the full disclosure…(...)

iOS 7 toggles concept

Posted: 09 Apr 2013 08:29 AM PDT

The idea is somewhat similar to Velox, which I still prefer over this concept. At this point, it’s clear that iOS 7 needs an easy way to access toggles. Will Apple make it happen? That’s the question.

What do you think?

Apple patents offline iTunes purchases

Posted: 09 Apr 2013 07:37 AM PDT

iTunes 11 (three up, MacBook, iPhone, iPad)

Could Apple be preparing a prepaid version of iTunes of sorts, one that could allow users to purchase music and other digital media from the Apple cloud without an Internet connection? Tuesday, the iPhone maker was granted a patent for a system permitting iTunes purchases using offline credits, according to the 2010 filing. At the heart of the system is the ability to buy credits while online. The credits would also get stored locally on your device, not just in your online iTunes account.

Those ‘offline’ credits can then purchase and enable various media that would first have to be cached automatically on your device, based on top sellers, recommendations, past purchases and other criteria.

In turn, people could make iTunes transactions whenever they happen to be, even when being online is impractical. Reportedly, the proposed technology could also increase iTunes sales by offering restricted usage of the material…(...)

Analyst: bowing to phablet trend, Apple’s iPhone 5S to come in three screen sizes

Posted: 09 Apr 2013 06:36 AM PDT

iPhone 6 mockup (Martin Hajek 001)

Apple’s rumored S-upgrade to its iPhone, the iPhone 5S, is assumed to arrive some time during summer, possibly shortly after Apple presumably announces it at its annual developers conference in June or July (the company hasn’t yet set the date for WWDC 2013). One analyst in a note issued to clients Tuesday wrote that supply chatter points to multiple screen sizes for the iPhone 5S in order to appeal to consumers who dig jumbo-sized handsets and improve its standing in the market…(...)

Google accused of using Android as a Trojan Horse locking out competitors

Posted: 09 Apr 2013 06:00 AM PDT

Android Chrome statue (glowing eyes)

Much has been said about Google’s openness with Android, the mobile operating system the Internet giant gives away free of charge in the hope of spurring the ecosystem of devices with access to its many services.

But Google’s rivals are now complaining to Europe that the search monster is using Android as a Trojan Horse of sorts to lock out competing services on mobile devices.

How? By contractually demanding that vendors who want Google Maps or YouTube or the Google Play store also preload its many other services. Such an approach to openness "uses deceptive conduct to lockout competition in mobile," rivals argue…(...)

Apple claimed $3 out of each $4 top app stores made in Q1

Posted: 09 Apr 2013 05:25 AM PDT

App Store Icon

In the latest sign of the importance apps play in smartphone adoption, more than thirteen billion downloads were recorded during the first three months of 2013, according to a Monday report.

The survey of the four leading app stores also found Apple, Google and others earned $2.2 billion from apps, an eleven percent increase over the final quarter of 2012.

Whereas Apple leads in terms of revenue – and by a large margin, too – Google’s Play Store, thanks to a large installed base of Android devices, has the upper hand in terms of download count. Specifically, the App Store collected 74 percent of the revenue of top app stores, while Google Play led registered 51 percent of apps obtained…(...)
