Hello Everyone! I am unable to upgrade my early-2011 MacBook Pro to Mountain Lion. So far, I have done a SuperDuper full backup to a Glyph 2 TB external, as well as run a TimeMachine backup after that. That was probably overkill, but I wasn't sure if the new OS would check Time Machine after I installed. Anyway, I purchased and downloaded late last night after all of the backing up.

This morning I attempted to install, but when I ran the installer I was told that I can't use the MacPro HD. When I tried clicking on it anyway (it was grayed out) the message was that this drive was being used for Time Machine backups.

So, I reconnected the Glyph and tried again. Still can't use the internal hard drive. So I checked to see how much available space I had (66.87 GB free of 499.25 GB). 170.5 GB is for backups. How? I am so confused right now. In Preferences, I have Time Machine set to the Glyph external hard drive and locked. I've checked all other users and made sure that this was the case for them as well.

I have already chatted with Apple and am awaiting a call back from phone support. Can any of you help me? Thanks in advance!

Chanin

What drive are you using for TimeMachine backups?

The external Glyph is used for Time Machine - not the hard drive.

You probably did this; but, if not, turn off TimeMachine in System prefs and try the install again.

I have been away so did not notice this until yesterday.  I glanced at a flash of my gmail mail that came on the screen while I was on the internet, on my Google page. Unfortunately it was telling me my cousin passed away. This message has come in fine on my iPad and iPhone, but I have had no new messages come through on the MAC. So something it wrong on my MAC. (MacBook Pro and using Google Chrome)

I had heard gmail did something to the mail but did not look into it until yesterday. So...

In trying to put the settings back on gmail, to the way they were, I unchecked two of the new additional mailboxes, like a tutorial I found said to do to put it back to normal. We now have primary, social and promotional (+2 others) email folders with gmail. I had to do this online through gmail. When I went back to my MAC, where I had over 1000 emails in my inbox, they were all gone. They are still appearing on my iPad and iPhone and when I go to my gmail through the internet they are still there.

It seems I can send from the MAC but I don't receive anything. One of the choices on the MAC was "rebuild" and I tried that. Nothing happened. I attempted "add account" and it told me I already have an account with that email address and password. I am afraid to delete the mailbox and re-add it as I have hundreds of emails stored in folders in the "On My MAC" area of MAC mail. and I am worried those might disappear. Those sorted into folders do not appear on the iPad or iPhone. Some are important.

Any ideas?? I would like to get my mail back on the MAC in the inbox, as well as receive mail there again. I am sure there are many other's this has happened to.

Thank you for the time and help.

Jann

I don't use gmail, but let's cover some basics so those who do can help you easier. And so I can learn about gmail options.

It sounds like you are using web mail to view your email, is that correct? You are not using the Apple Mail.app on any of the 3 devices, correct?

If you moved or deleted the email on one of the devices it will do the same on the other two, whether you use web mail or an email app. Gmail is IMAP and that is how it works.

You sent the below post from a yahoo account. Do you also access it by web mail? Do you forward the yahoo to the gmail or vice versa?

I have Word for Mac 2011 and added two things to the Favorites bar that is in the Open window. I want to delete one of them but it's not letting me.
Can someone please tell me how to delete this?

Thank you,

Jennifer

My (limited) understanding is that OS X (since Tiger?) has the VNC server built-in (a la Apple Remote Desktop). This is enabled in System Preferences (Sharing > Screen Sharing).

No?

It is working between 2 Macs with Snow Leopard. It is not working between one SL and the ML Macs.

Thanks
Dave

You can also just use Screen Sharing.

Open a window in Finder. In the left frame under shared, you should see the Macs on your LAN. Click on the other Mac. No matter what view you are in, you should see a choice of "Connect as" or "Share Screen". Click on "Share Screen". If your user name and password are not in the Keychain, then you will need to enter that.

A new Window will open with the desktop of the other Mac.

I use this between my MBP with 10.7.5 and a G4 tower with 10.5.8, but this should also work with a Mac running 10.8. The only thing I have checked of4 on the G$ under Sys Prefs/ Sharing are Screen Sharing and File Sharing. You also have to select choice of Allow access for: " All users" or "Only these users:" and then you have to add those users. You may or may not have to do this on both ends.

I have used this a coupe times a week, for the last several years.

To move files between the two, you have to use "Connect as".

Have you checked the prefs on your remote 10.8 Mac under Apple Remote Desktop? I know you have to give permission on the remote Mac, or at least that was how we had to do it about 2 years ago with a friend 600 miles away with ARD.

OS X has always (since 10.2 at least) had the "server", as part of
Preferences > Sharing.

For several OS versions, it has *also* had the client as part of Finder (as
above).

Hi all

I've got an iBooks app which appears stuck on install. Noticed it today when I left the house on a business trip. I had synced with my computer wirelessly overnight and it indicated the sync had completed with some exceptions. I don't believe exceptions are related.

On plane when I tried to find app, it didn't show. Then when I went to app center it showed on apps to update as updating.

I tried all the things indicated with google search - hit it once to stop update, then restart update. Didn't work. Tried deleting app - won't delete. Tried restarting iPad - no success. Tried Genius Bar at Apple Store - only solution they could offer was to reset iPad. Can't do that while I'm away as this is my only computer while traveling.

Any suggestions or am I out of luck until I get back him?

Thanks,

Jay

A Reset should not cause any lose of your data. A Restore (to factory defaults) would cause lose all data.

Why were you trying to update apps on a plane? You probably had no internet connection.

Many years ago one of my coworkers at Vandenberg Air Force Base was in the Pismo Beach CA Corvette club (maybe it was just sports car club - not relevant).

The club investigated a story of a mint condition first year of manufacture Vette that was sold for $500.00 The club found the car and traced its history back to the Chevy dealer. They were still looking for the creep who bought it for $500.00 when I moved out of the area.

The pieced together story is that the car was originally purchased by an eighteen year old boy. The week after purchasing the car he got his draft notice for the Korean was. With 1500 miles on the car he wrapped it up for storage in his mother's garage. The young man was killed in Korea and mom just couldn't bring herself to sell the car. Thirty years later mom had to move to a nursing home. She peaked into the wrapping on the car and saw a Chevrolet emblem. Chevy's of that vintage were listed in the newspaper in the $500 range. She listed it and quickly got a buyer.
