Posted: 15 Aug 2013 05:22 PM PDT

ios7beta6

Apple has unexpectedly seeded iOS 7 beta 6 to developers this afternoon, breaking its typical two-week cycle. The update comes just a little more than week after beta 5 landed, and appears to be an emergency fix-related release.

Beta 6 is available now to all registered Apple developers via both the Dev Center and OTA, which can be installed by visiting the Software Update section in the Settings app of proper devices that currently have iOS 7 installed… (...)

China’s Meizu to unleash its next-gen iPhone clone on September 2

Posted: 15 Aug 2013 04:45 PM PDT

Meizu 20130902 invitation

China's handset maker Meizu has made a name for itself by mimicking Apple aesthetics with its inexpensive yet nicely spec’d MX handsets.

With local brands such as Huawei, ZTE and Xiaomi halving Apple’s market share in the important 1.33 billion people market, Meizu is hoping to steal spotlight from Apple’s upcoming September 10 iPhone event by scheduling a major media event of its own on September 2.

The company is apparently gearing up to introduce the third-generation MX handset, the MX3. If a series of leaked press shots and the ‘Think Big’ tagline are anything to go by, the phablet will be a crossover between HTC’s One V and Apple’s iPhone. And as per usual, Meizu shouldn’t disappoint in the hardware and design departments…(...)

Apple’s Matcha purchase believed to be over its content recommendation algorithms

Earlier this week, news broke that Apple had purchased a small video discovery startup called Matcha. At one time, the service helped users find interesting TV shows and Movies based on their preferences, but it mysteriously went offline back in May.

While we found out on Tuesday why it disappeared, that’s about all we knew about the acquisition. But a report from TechCrunch today shines some new light on the deal, citing sources that say Apple was after Matcha’s recommendation algorithms…(...)

How to quickly move app icons with ‘EasyIconEdit’

Posted: 15 Aug 2013 12:40 PM PDT

EasyIconEdit Featured 03

When it comes to moving icons around on your iPhone in a quick and efficient manner, you have a few options. The first and most obvious option is to use iTunes’ built in app icon management tools. This allows you to efficiently rearrange the location of your app icons, and you don’t have to be jailbroken to do so.

The second, and arguably easier and more desirable method, is to use Lance Fetters’ MultiIconMover. This is a tweak that allows you to quickly select batches of icons to quickly move them from one place to another. We’ve already covered MultiIconMover before; check it out for more information.

Recently, a new challenger has entered into the ring — a new jailbreak tweak entitled EasyIconEdit. Like MultiIconMover, it requires users to be jailbroken, and like MultiIconMover, it uses the same tap to select method for selecting groups of icons simultaneously.

The question is this: How does EasyIconEdit compare with the competition? Have a look past the break and we’ll show you.(...)

Well today, the app gets even better with a major 2.0 update. The new version of Finish includes design improvements and a number of new features such as task-by-task time setting, optional ‘Bother Me’ reminders, and real-life rewards for completing tasks…(...)

Four simple ways to back up your iPhone photos

Posted: 15 Aug 2013 11:57 AM PDT

iOS 7 iPhone 5 Camera Roll Photos

I have a friend who recently nearly lost all of his photos of his daughter. He had his iPhone for just about two years. He took tons of pictures of her. She wasn't even two years old yet, so basically her whole life was on his iPhone. One day, his phone crashed and he couldn't figure out what happened to it. His pictures were lost.

He was eventually able to recover his photos, but not without hours of work and days of anxiety. When I asked him why he didn't just back his photos up, he had no good response. Always back up your photos. Seriously. Always back up your photos. We've got a tutorial on a few different ways you can back up your photos so you’ll never have to face the dreaded lost memories again…(...)

Specs of Nokia’s alleged Windows RT tablet tipped

Posted: 15 Aug 2013 09:00 AM PDT

Nokia patent (Windows RT tablet with kickstand)

The struggling cell phone giant Nokia has been notably absent from the tablet market despite talk of a Nokia-branded tablet being in the works. It appears the elusive product may be nearing completion, according to both leaked specs and a Nokia patent filing which outlines a tablet-like device sporting the familiar-looking detachable kickstand and keyboard combo reminiscent of the Touch/Type covers for Microsoft's own Surface tablet.

As Nokia switched to Windows Phone for its smartphones, little wonder that the upcoming tablet is said to run Microsoft’s Windows RT 8.1 operating system built for the power-efficient ARM architecture. The biggest drawback: Windows RT does not run any of the legacy Windows apps written for Intel chips…(...)

Apple exploring NFC-based digital media gifting between iDevices

Posted: 15 Aug 2013 08:35 AM PDT

Apple patent (device-to-defice gifting, drawing 001)

One of the hangups with Apple’s iTunes is that currently there is no way for you to directly ‘gift’ digital media to a friend or family member. Though you can easily trade, re-sell or give away a music CD, you can’t do that with movies, books any other digital content types offered on Apple’s iTunes Store.

A patent application published Thursday could solve this dilemma, thanks to near-field communications (NFC) technology, which has yet to be deployed across Apple devices.

According to the filing published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, instead of a second party receiving an email from iTunes that a song or video has been purchased, an item could be gifted to a nearby iOS device simply with the press of a button…(...)

China Mobile Chairman says iPhone talks with Apple are progressing

Posted: 15 Aug 2013 08:15 AM PDT

china mobile sign

China Mobile has more than an astounding 740 million subscribers, making it the world’s largest wireless carrier. It is also a rare major carrier without Apple’s iconic smartphone. Part of it is politics – Chinese carriers reluctantly agree to revenue-sharing schemes with foreign companies.

China is also moving away from high phone subsidies that impact short-term profitability, but there surely must be some plain stubbornness as both Apple and China Mobile reportedly repeatedly bring onerous terms to the negotiating table.

Although we heard multiple times in the past that the two sides were about to reach some sort of resolution, the iPhone distribution deal never came to be. Apple’s boss Tim Cook recently met with China Mobile Chairman Xi Guohua and now Reuters reports that a China Mobile tie-up is closer than ever…(...)

There’s more to Apple’s rumored budget iPhone than just the price

Posted: 15 Aug 2013 07:25 AM PDT

iPhone 5C boxes (Martin Hajek 002)

Are you ready for a break from the usual headlines concerning Apple’s likely introduction of a low-cost iPhone? The perception of low-cost smartphones as some technological game of limbo between the iPhone maker and Google’s Android is all wrong, says one analyst. Those thinking Apple needs to join the race to the bottom misunderstand that hardware price is not the overriding factor for every consumer shopping for a handset…(...)

Half of top US iPad apps not available or ready for Android tablets

What with Android having a numerical edge on Apple’s iOS, chances are good that popular iPad apps will find their way to Google’s Play store, right? To the contrary, just half of the hundred most popular iPad apps in the US are available for Android tablets, according to a research firm Wednesday.

Of the top hundred iPad apps in the US App Store, thirty don’t even appear on Google Play and eighteen more are not optimized for Android tablets, just smartphone versions cartoonishly displayed on a larger screen….(...)
