Unlike my kids, I'm not "all thumbs" (or perhaps "thumbtastic" is a better word for the ability to type at a gazillion words per minute on the iPhone virtual keyboard). Consequently, when I communicate with them, even though I've conceded that email is (for them) so "last century," I still prefer, when possible, to use the computer's Mac OS Messages app. Problem is, the Messages app SENDS the iMessage every time I enter a carriage return (another legacy element from a bygone communications era--I mean, who BOTHERS with such quaint things as formatting? After all, if you can't say it in 128 characters, what's the use??!!

(that last bit is NOT me thinking)

The result is that my kids all too often get messages from me that consist solely of "Hi" because the <return> key sends the incomplete message.

I've discovered that if I dictate the message, I can say "new line" while dictating, but if I want to use two other archaic conventions (white space between paragraphs, and paragraphs themselves) the dictation entry screen in Messages won't DISPLAY the carriage returns until I can see the text itself (by turning the speech-to-text mode off and on by rapid "<function&gt;<function&gt;" keytaps). Because I type passably well in QWERTY, I'm hoping there's a way of formatting my messages without having to do alternate between keyboard and microphone.

Anyone know if there is a way?

Yes, in this case CR = <send>.

You can insert a newline using <ctrl><send> or <option><send>. I think most
word processor apps work in a similar way: <send> starts a new para and you
need to use <option><send> for a newline.

My dilemma isn't relevant to the iPhone, where on the "Messages"; composition screen, there's a "return" virtual button bottom right, and a separate "Send" virtual button to the right of the text entry panel. So, it's easy to create new lines and paragraphs on the device assuming one can "thumb" proficiently.

I thought I'd tried that, familiar as I am with many word processors. Guess I hadn't.

Thanks so much!

All I can say is USB 3.0 works fine in Mavericks.

Have you tried an external USB 3 disk?

Yes and I seems to be working as it should. I have a 2 TB USB 3.0 Drive and
it is doing fine.

I have just received an email notice for TechTool Pro 7. I'm sure others will be seeing this soon, and seeing advertising.

Randy: I'm sure you have a well-considered opinion about software like this in general, and TechTool Pro in particular. Since many of us may soon be contemplating these products, could you tell us your thoughts about their applicability at this stage of development of the MacOS, about their usefulness, about who should consider buying them, if anyone....

TechTool Pro has lots of features, just about none of which I consider important. The one feature that it has that I find sometimes important is to repair your disk's directory when Disk Utility is unable to. Fortunately that's a rare occurrence these days, and I don't think that it's common enough that you should purchase a utility to anticipate that eventuality. If you do ever need such a utility, Disk Warrior is a far superior choice.

The thing is, OS X 10.9 Mavericks will be out in the next month or two. It's impossible to say at this point what software utilities, if any at all, Mavericks will require.

Well I think I have Time Machine and Time Capsule working properly now. I found out there was a reset button on the back of Time Capsule so I pushed that then I re-downloaded Airport Utility. From there I was able to open Time Capsule and delete all prior backups. This gave me 2 TB of space rather than the 34.7 GB it previously said I had.

It is backing up now and estimates it will take about four days to back up the approx 488 GB on my hard drive.

Thanks,

Paul

1.5 MB/sec ?
Ouch?
Even for Wifi TM backup, that seems slow.

Agreed. For the first backup, I'd connect with ethernet.

Also, I hope there's nothing in the now-deleted backups that were, or might
be, wanted. I don't have much faith in any backup system that requires a
complete wipeout to get it going again.
