Facebook updates Pages Manager with a bevy of new features

Posted: 21 Aug 2013 06:08 PM PDT

Facebook Pages Manager 2.1 for iOS (iPad screenshot 001)

Facebook’s Pages Manager mobile app has seen little action since May’s 2.0 update which has brought it in line with popular features seen elsewhere, such as stickers and the omnipresent photo filters.

But don’t worry, the software isn’t going anywhere nor has the social networking giant forgotten about it. Matter of fact, Facebook’s mobile team has just pushed an incremental 2.1 update to Pages Manager containing half a dozen tweaks and new capabilities.

For starters, you can now use the app to edit the cover photo of your Facebook Page, which previously required visiting the web interface. Additionally, the new Pages Manager now allows for the creation of a new Page in-app as well as events that are hosted by your Page (this is an iPhone-only feature).

Additional goodies are right after the break…(...)

OS X Mavericks DP4 Setup

Apple has seeded the 6th developer preview of OS X Mavericks this afternoon. The download comes exactly two weeks after developer preview 5 dropped, which added both the Mac iBooks app and a new version of iPhoto beta.

The newest Mavericks preview comes alongside the final build of OS X 10.8.5, and is now available for download in either the Mac App Store, as a software update, or through Apple’s Mac Dev Center, to all registered developers…(...)

Ten One Design introduces new magnetic stand for iPad mini

Posted: 21 Aug 2013 04:11 PM PDT

magnus mini 2

I’m not what you would call a ‘stand kind of person.’ I don’t have a dock for my iPhone 5, and I’m not sure where the chintzy little tripod thing is that I bought for my iPad a few years back. I just never used it.

If I was in the market for something like that, though, I’d consider this new Magnus Mini stand from Ten One Design. It sports a very minimalistic design, and it uses magnets to hold your iPad mini into place…(...)

New Real Racing 3 update brings classic American muscle cars

Posted: 21 Aug 2013 03:25 PM PDT

Real Racing 3 (Muscle Cards update, teaser 001)

One of the key reasons I used to burn midnight oil quite a lot playing Driver on the original PlayStation – apart from the locations (Miami, San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York) and the awesome controls coupled to realistic physics – is the vehicle lineup, the sort of cars you see smashed in the 1960-1970s car chase and cop movies.

To fans of such legendary cars as the Dodge, Shelby and other big V8 muscle cars: Electronic Arts’s latest content update to free-to-play Real Racing 3 is a no-brainer.

That’s right, you can now own classic Detroit metal in this Real Racing 3 update, as well as race friends on a bunch of new tracks, appreciate physics enhancements, better camera angles and lots more…(...)

If you’ve recently downloaded Google’s new Adsense app, and the latest version of the YouTube app, you may have noticed that you didn’t have to sign into both of them—just one or the other. That’s because they feature new unified account sign-ins.

Several users have noticed that Google has switched on shared account logins for the latest version of its YouTube app, as well as Adsense. This means that logging into one will automatically log you into the other without the need to enter account info…(...)

Facebook Embedded Posts (image 001)

Following in the footsteps of Twitter's Vine and its own Instagram – both of which have recently started supporting embed codes for posts – the social networking giant Facebook in late-July launched the new Embedded Posts feature. These embeddable public posts could be initially seen only on websites of top publications which signed up as launch partners, like CNN, Huffington Post, Bleacher Report, People and Mashable.

After nearly two months of testing, the feature is now ready for prime time as Facebook today started rolling out Embedded Posts to everyone…(...)

Apple hires Levi’s exec to head US retail operations ahead of new product launches

Enrique Atienza (image 001)

As the search for its retail chief continues unabated following former SVP Ron Johnson’s departure last year (I know, it hasn’t worked out well for him), Apple has now made a surprising hire to help its US retail efforts, a credible blog has learned. Enrique Atienza, who served as SVP of Retail Americas and Global Store Operations at the clothing powerhouse Levi Strauss, has emerged as Tim Cook’s pick for the top director position of Apple’s US Retail operations, according to sources with knowledge of the hire…(...)

Google reportedly eyeing rights to NFL games

Posted: 21 Aug 2013 01:30 PM PDT

NFL Sunday Ticket for iOS (iPad screenshot 001)

The $99 Apple TV set-top box may be the most popular streaming device out there (not if you ask Roku), but Apple’s got some catching up to do in terms of content availability. Figuring as much, the company’s recently added WatchESPN and HBO Go streaming apps to the Apple TV’s home screen. Moreover, we’re now hearing that 24/7 Vevo music video streaming via the Apple TV could become a reality as early as later this week.

Apple’s strides in the TV space don’t resonate well with the Internet giant Google, whose Google TV platform is struggling to catch on with couch potatoes and cable-cutters. According to AllThingsD, this could change as Google’s boss Larry Page today met with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and other execs…(...)

Stealing iPhones is more profitable than crack for San Francisco’s pro thieves

stolen stuff from car

We’ve always held that the iPhone can be like a drug, its users addicted to just one more app, just one more high score. Now comes word from the horse’s mouth, so to speak: criminals. Theft of the iPhone and other cellphones is increasing in popularity with criminals who once sold crack cocaine.

Turns out, a new twist on iPhone thefts can be more profitable – let alone, less dangerous – than selling drugs on the street…(...)

AT&T will soon start offering refurbished iPhone 3GS models to prepaid GoPhone customers, according to a new report from MacRumors. The device will be sold full retail to those that don’t qualify for a subsidized phone.

Star Trek Into Darkness now available on iTunes, three weeks ahead of DVD release

Star Trek Into Darkness on iTunes

Apple’s selection of blockbuster releases on iTunes is constantly growing. Though not quite yet a match for other digital services, Apple typically beats the other guys in terms of pre-releases, exclusive launches and even early pre-theatrical releases, provided you’re willing to pay a bunch of money to watch a movie on iTunes before it even hits the silver screen.

JJ Abrams’s Star Trek Into Darkness has been available for pre-order on iTunes for well over a month. Yesterday, the digital download has finally hit iTunes, three weeks ahead of its September 10 DVD release…(...)

Video shows off the iPhone 5C’s scratch resistance

Posted: 21 Aug 2013 08:50 AM PDT

iPhone 5C scratch resistance

Apple’s rumored mid-tier handset called the iPhone 5C is said to feature a plastic body much like the iPhone 3GS, only sturdier. Using polycarbonate plastic in place of the iPhone 5′s sensitive two-tone aluminum + glass combo should yield some much-needed advancements in the scratch resistance department, as shown in a video posted by Taiwan’s Apple Daily.

The clip also gives us the exact measurements of the iPhone 5C’s rear shell which, despite rocking the same four-inch screen as the current iPhone 5, appears to be just slightly taller and thicker than its high-end counterpart…(...)

IDC: China’s iPad market share slashed by strong home-grown competition

apple store china line

In every analysis listing market share, there is that mysterious ‘Other’ category which lumps together all the lesser-known players. Now comes word ‘Other’ is making a name for itself, as the Apple iPad’s share of the increasingly important China market was almost cut in half during the second quarter.

Researcher IDC said Tuesday Apple’s tablet market share in China fell to 28 percent during the second quarter of 2013, down from its usual level above 50 percent. Some 46 percent of tablets shipped to China were made by ‘Other’ tablet brands, often low-cost Android devices, according to the research firm…(...)

Netflix gains My List feature

Netflix (My List, web screenshot 001)

Netflix today announced a new feature to make saving your favorite movies and televisions shows easier than ever. Aptly named My List, it lets you add any movie or TV show title to your own row or gallery on Netflix. You can easily rearrange the list, add or remove titles, with Netflix automatically sorting your entries.

It’s based on the existing Instant Queue feature which however lacks automated sorting and its own Netflix row.

My List is a staggered roll-out that’s launching worldwide in the next two weeks across multiple platforms, including iOS…(...)

Apple patent envisions 3D gestures for iPads

apple-patent-3d-gestures

Imagine the iPad’s touch screen gaining a third dimension, enabling users to extract a 2D image, then manipulate it using new gestures, such as ‘pull’, ‘push’ and ‘sculpt’. That’s the gist of an Apple patent filed in 2012 and published Tuesday by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Titled ‘Working with 3D Objects,’ the patent outlines a touch screen interface where users “generate and manipulate 3D objects using 3D gesture inputs.” At the core, the technology employs both capacitive touch sensors and proximity sensors in the iDevice screen…(...)
