Wow, you have to give it to Google for trying to take over the experience by creating a nice little ecosystem right inside Apple’s iOS.

See, the Internet giant has been quite diligent about integrating its popular iPhone and iPad apps to work seamlessly together.

Take Gmail, for example.

Not only has today’s update enabled a prettier attachment experience, but it’s also brought out tight integration with Google apps. This is quite handy as links in email messages to Google Drive and Google+ content can now go directly to Google’s native iOS apps, if installed…(...)

Bad news: this morning’s Apple TV update broke PlexConnect hack

Posted: 27 Aug 2013 04:28 PM PDT

PlexConnect on Apple TV (MacRumors 001)

Apple this morning has issued an update making its popular $99 Apple TV gadget a whole lot more useful by enabling an additional five content channels: 24/7 music video streaming via Vevo TV, in addition to on-demand and live video feeds from Weather Channel, Disney Channel, Disney XD and Smithsonian Channel.

While not a software update per se – new icons automatically appear on your Home screen upon firing up the set-top box without requiring any intervention on the user’s part – something has changed because it’s broken PlexConnect, a popular hack that fools Apple’s Trailers app into streaming media files stored on your computer, no jailbreak required…(...)

Super Brothers brings a very familiar platformer style to iOS

Posted: 27 Aug 2013 03:09 PM PDT

Super Brothers 1For fans of the Super Mario Bros franchise that have hoped the world's favorite platformer would someday get ported to iOS, the fire has died and reality has drained all optimism that it will ever happen.

Since you can't have the real thing, why not experiment with a game that is not entirely unlike it. Super Brothers is a reproduction that is not an exact copy, but comes close enough to make you question whether the app's developers are violating some kind of copyright laws…(...)

How to make your iPhone jump to full brightness when launching the Camera

Posted: 27 Aug 2013 12:32 PM PDT

CamBright Hero 2

A new tweak from Auxo co-creator Jack Willis recently hit the Cydia store, and it fixes an issue that likely plagues more than a few iPhone photographers. CamBright is the name of the tweak, and it forces the iPhone’s screen brightness up to 100% whenever the stock Camera app is launched.

The tweak is great for those of you who don’t walk around all day with 100% brightness on your iPhone, but who like to have the full brightness whenever snapping photos or video. Have a look at our video that showcases how CamBright works.(...)

NetworkList: save Wi-Fi passwords and SSIDs

Posted: 27 Aug 2013 12:11 PM PDT

NetworkList Hero

NetworkList is a recently released jailbreak tweak that allows you to keep a running list of the Wi-Fi networks known to your device. This list makes it easy to remember the Wi-Fi network names, and you can even use a tap gesture to copy the SSID or the password (which is shown in the clear) to your pasteboard.

Some may balk at the potential security concerns, but if that’s not something you worry about, NetworkList may be worth your time. Have a look at our video walkthrough past the break for more information.(...)

The struggling Internet giant Yahoo released its native Mail app for the iPhone last December, but it fell on deff ear.

As part of the sweeping streamlining announced on its blog this morning, Yahoo has pushed an incremental update to its iPhone, iPod touch and iPad client, the new version now allowing you to open attachments in other apps and manage multiple folders with ease…(...)

Apple: DOJ’s revised e-book remedies a ‘broadside’ favoring Amazon

Posted: 27 Aug 2013 09:30 AM PDT

iBooks (three up, MacBook, iPad, iPhone)

Even after the end of a formal antitrust trial, both sides in ebook pricing case continue to argue. Apple said the Department of Justice’s latest version of proposed penalties are a “broadside” favoring rival Amazon. The comments by Apple’s legal team came as the government and the iBooks company hammer out details largely in public.

Apple’s remarks centered on the DOJ’s insistence that an outside antitrust monitor be named to ensure against anticompetitive practices in the ebook industry. In July, Apple was found guilty of ebook price-fixing and colluding with publishers against Amazon…(...)

Apple patents sees iDevices becoming DJ for silent discos

Posted: 27 Aug 2013 08:38 AM PDT

apple-disco-patent

Combine the huge iTunes library of songs with the social aspect of sharing and you have a bit of an idea what might be behind a patent granted to Apple Tuesday by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

The patent, which describes a ‘Coordinated group musical experience,’ takes a riff off a trendy activity known as ‘silent discos,’ where people gather to listen to a DJ’s music wearing headphones, rather than blaring mega-decibel volumes. Does the patent address a glaring technology need? No, but it does remind us of Apple’s own quirky roots…(...)

Apple TV gains apps from Vevo, Weather Channel, Disney and Smithsonian, we go hands-on

Posted: 27 Aug 2013 07:37 AM PDT

Apple TV (Vevo channel)

Just as we’ve been expecting, Apple has updated its $99 Apple TV set-top box with 24/7 music video streaming by way of Vevo TV. But that’s not all, Apple has surprised us all by adding support for several other premium content sources. In addition to Vevo, the update has brought out four additional apps: Weather Channel, Disney Channel and Disney XD, as well as Smithsonian Channel, co-owned by CBS and the Smithsonian Institution.

What’s really interesting is that Weather Channel seems to be the real app rather than just a simple streaming channel, although both Smithsonian Channel and Weather Channel offer on-demand clips. Go past the fold for the full reveal and Jeff’s video hands-on.

UPDATE: people who use a DNS trick called PlexConnect to stream media to their non-jailbroken Apple TV through the Trailers app should be aware that this morning’s update appears to have broken the hack. More on that here(...)

Apple patent turns iPhone into smart home remote

Posted: 27 Aug 2013 06:43 AM PDT

apple-remote

The introduction of numerous media devices – from your television to DVD player and stereo – coupled with the growth of smart homes would seem to cry out for Apple-like simplification. It just so happens, there is a patent for that. Apple has patented a way to control your home media collection right from your iPhone.

The patent, filed a half-decade ago by the creator of the iTunes Remote app, uses “scenes” to adjust your home multimedia to fit settings like “Romantic Movie Night”, “Dinner,” or simply “Relax.”…(...)

iOS 7 general availability pegged for September 10

Posted: 26 Aug 2013 07:27 PM PDT

iOS 7 (App Store teaser 002)

We’ve suspected for some time Apple will be holding its big iPhone event on September 10, with sources claiming a Gold Master iOS 7 build for developers will get released that same day. That’s Apple’s standard modus operandi as past Gold Master (GM) builds were seeded to the company’s registered developers either at WWDC or at iPhone press conferences.

Alleged email communication Siri partner Nuance sent to devs now indicates iOS 7 GA will also be released the same day, on September 10. GA? GM?

There are some caveats here…(...)
