The IPEVO AT-ST iPhone Video Stand Project is Now Live on Kickstarter - Published on 08/27/13

Tech maker IPEVO's first Kickstarter project aims to complete the prototype phase for the company's AT-ST Video Stand for iPhone, a versatile swing-arm phone stand for iPhone 5, iPhone 4 and iPod touch. AT-ST's Video Stand swing-arm may be positioned by hand due to a finely-tuned tension in the joints, and does not require knobs or screws. A weighted base provides a sturdy foundation, and a specially-designed phone clamp at the end of the arm allows for firm yet quick phone mounts and unmounts.

Sunnyvale, California - With its first foray into Kickstarter, consumer technology company IPEVO has launched its AT-ST Video Stand for iPhone Kickstarter project on August 20th. The project is seeking a total of $30,000 for a period of 30 days to bring the AT-ST stand from its present prototype phase to the completion of an initial manufacturing run. Kickstarters pledging $29 or more will receive a phone stand as a reward for backing the project.

IPEVO is known for its iconic line of document cameras as well as a variety of other education, business, and consumer technology products. As conceived, the AT-ST Video Stand for iPhone is the company's first phone stand. According to the Kickstarter page, "the idea for the AT-ST came about from the everyday hassle of shooting video with an iPhone." AT-ST features a multi-jointed swing-arm which positions the user's iPhone 5 or 4 at any height and angle for applications like FaceTime, for photograph and video capture, and for general use and viewing.

AT-ST's swing-arm may be positioned by hand due to a finely-tuned tension in the joints, and does not require knobs or screws. A weighted base provides a sturdy foundation, and a specially-designed phone clamp at the end of the arm allows for firm yet quick phone mounts and unmounts. Additional features include a cord clip in the middle of the swing-arm, which keeps the charge cord managed and out of the way. iPhone may be charged while mounted in the holder.

IPEVO offers a six-tier rewards system. A pledge of $1 will result in a Thank-You email. A pledge of $15 comes with five touchscreen wipes. Kickstarters pledging $29 will receive a black AT-ST Video Stand, an offer limited to the first 20 backers. Kickstarters pledging $49 will receive a black AT-ST Video Stand, an offer limited to 50 backers. A $69 pledge also results in a black AT-ST Video Stand (with no limit on the number of backers). Finally, a $99 pledge will get the backer a limited-edition white AT-ST Video Stand. These special white units, limited to 150, will not be mass-produced.

"We're tech users ourselves, and we saw a clear problem with shooting video using iPhone," said Royce Hong, CEO and big head of design for IPEVO. "Handheld video is usually poor, and it's difficult to achieve the right framing, particularly when capturing yourself. The existing scant selection of phone stands are tripod-based and don't offer flexibility of position or angle. As we envision, the AT-ST delivers a firm, versatile iPhone mount that transcends handheld quality problems as well as the limitations of conventional tripod stands. We feel it will be the best iPhone stand available."

Tiny Missiles developer is making a point to let potential purchasers know it will contain No Ads, and No In-App Purchases, "Just Pure Game!". "I wanted Tiny Missiles to give players a fun and challenging user experience, one that doesn't include the distractions of an in-app purchase business model."

Tiny Missiles is easy to pick up, and offers four starting difficulties to accommodate players of all skill levels. Game play consists of tapping the screen to launch your tiny missiles at a specific location and attempt to destroy the fruit targets flying overhead, or blast open the supply crates. While keeping the skies clear of rogue fruit, you'll want to avoid hitting the hand grenades and flash bangs, or letting fruit targets pass by without being destroyed. As the game progresses so does the challenge. Targets get smaller and spawn more frequently, gravity and target velocities increase, and the number of targets you must destroy to complete each level goes up. Play continues, becoming progressively more difficult until the player fails to complete a level by "striking out".

Tiny Missiles also features a supply token system which can be used between games to purchase items in the supply depot such as the "Tiny Nuke", or can be used to purchase points in helpful skills that provide bonuses during game play. Supply tokens are awarded during the game for performing multi-hit combos, completing levels, and blasting open supply crates.

Support for Game Center allows players to compete for the world's highest scores and longest hit streaks, as well as track the over 40 achievements they can complete as they blast their way through waves of fruit splattering goodness. In addition, friends can issue challenges to one another through Game Center, to beat scores, or match achievements, which add to the fun and replay value.

Tiny Missiles will be available for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch at a price of $1.99 USD.

Xojo Shines at Ohanaware - Published on 08/27/13

Xojo, the multi-platform development tool for OS X, Windows, Linux, and the web, is used to power the popular photo editing application, Shine, from Ohanaware. Husband and wife developers, Sam and Joy Rowlands, primarily use Xojo to develop their products, which include photo editing software, development tools and more. Shine was designed to allow users to quickly and easily enhance digital photos by adding light rays, lens flares, tinting and other effects.

Austin, Texas - Xojo, Inc. today announced that Xojo, the popular, multi-platform development tool for the desktop, web, and, soon, iOS, is used by Ohanaware, a popular developer whose applications can be found in the Mac App Store, to power their latest photo editing application, Shine.

At Ohanaware husband and wife developers, Sam and Joy Rowlands, primarily use Xojo to develop their products, which include photo editing software, development tools and more. Like so many others, Rowlands started out programming with BASIC and then explored C and Hypercard. While at college, he used Visual Basic on Windows, but wished the visual, object-oriented language was available on the Mac. He even contacted Microsoft with this request multiple times.

Xojo's multi-platform support attracts developers from all over the world who want to offer support for Mac, Windows, Linux and the web. When Rowlands found Xojo he was excited by the endless possibilities of bringing all of his app ideas to life since he wouldn't be limited to developing for Windows only.

"I first found Xojo while reading a Mac magazine, where I read a review of the first release," commented Rowlands. "Finally, my prayers had been answered, it was Visual Basic for the Mac... and it wasn't written by Microsoft!"

"I don't recall the first app I wrote with Xojo, but the app that set my career in motion was called 'net_clipper,' which allowed a user to send and receive clipboards across a network. It never made much money, but it did get me noticed by a software publisher and the Mac magazines. net_clipper II, in fact, won an award from Xojo!"

This year, Rowlands released his newest Xojo-made app, Shine, which was designed to allow users to quickly and easily enhance digital photos by adding light rays, lens flares, tinting and other effects. For example, one morning he took a photo of a sunflower with the sun behind him. He then used Shine to add a light source, light rays, a lens flare and tint the photo. The result was a photo that looked like it was taken as the sun was setting from a direction the sun would never set!

Shine was also designed to take advantage of Apple's built-in technology, including their latest Retina displays and sandboxing security. Shine has been available since March 15, 2013 and has over 500 users, growing daily.

"We used Core Image and Core Graphics for the image processing, as this allows our app to take advantage of multi-processors and graphics cards without having to worry about it," commented Rowlands. "This allows us to deliver an app, where updates happen almost instantly, while the controls are adjusted and still being able to offer a high quality (and almost) full-screen experience."

Rowlands' Xojo-app portfolio ranges from small utilities to large-scale commercial applications and everything in between! The photo editing and photo effect apps offered by Ohanaware include:

"The MBS plugin contains so much useful stuff and really does save time when building apps, as it often already contains things I'm looking to do. The eSellerate plug-in allows us to sell the application directly from within the application, which is fantastic! A customer can download the free trial from our site, then when they want to purchase, it's handled within the application and will even automatically unlock upon completion."

"Over the years I have written bucket loads of code to add functionality to my apps, so it makes sense to utilize this already generated code," continued Rowlands. "I do confess, however, that I often find myself re-writing the code, as I've since discovered better ways to accomplish the same task."

Most of Ohanaware's apps are available for purchase from the Mac App Store, but the process has not been as simple as Rowlands would have liked.

"The Mac App Store is both a blessing and a curse, but our overall experience has been worth the effort, as our business has increased because our apps are displayed to millions of potential new customers," offered Rowlands. "If you want to sell a Mac application, you're going to have the most chance of success in the Mac App Store. The Mac App Store easily generates four times the revenue than what we can do from our own site alone!"
