Hi Eric,

What serendipity!

Your issue is easier to explain since it had to do w a drained battery. I have a local tech (Mac-certified) guru who agreed that it was likely the pram battery (in fact as I was speaking with him he said, if you totally drain your battery.... then he outlined what happened to your wife's mbp)..... but like you I read that some 2009s have no removable Pram battery. Who knows?

So far this mbp has hung onto the settings. I'll take it to this guy if it starts acting funny. Thanks for your reply.

A few weeks ago I needed exactly that: a CR2032 coin cell.
I found it locally.
Some places to look: Radio Shack, Best Buy, hardware stores, drug stores.

My research online suggests that this is the case: this model (MacbookPro5,5) does NOT have a PRAM battery.

I've found that the prices for these batteries on Amazon are substantially lower than what the local merchants charge in my area. I am a Prime member so shipping is not a factor for me.

My guess is you're right.
The Apple Model No A1278 is the same for this and some others according to the everymac.com page for the 2.26. This must be why I saw the references for another model having no PRAM battery as well.
I dunno, we'll live w/it for now. :s

Eric, don't worry. Further research turned up this from ifixit:

"Yes, you need to unsolder it. It is located right next to the trackpad connector. It looks exactly like a small watch battery with solder tabs. Be very careful, too much heat and the logic board trace will lift.

"I am looking at a small battery soldered onto the A1278 logic board right now as I type. All macbooks and macbook pros have batteries, but most are on a pigtailed connector either taped to the logic board or hidden under the optical drive. The sizes range from a 1/4 dime to a quarter. The types are lithium although the smallest almost seem like alkalines?""

Good afternoon,

This note will I am sure prove my ignorance. Even so I am looking for help.

I have been running out of patience with Windows and Microsoft. I bought a
very nice iPad three months ago and I am delighted with it.

My next move soon now will be to buy an iMac. All fine until I came to
sourcing software. I want an office suite and a database package. I have a Mac
compatible version of Adobe Photoshop Elements already.

To my dismay it looks like Apple Works is no longer produced and the only
Office suite available for Mac is Microsoft's Office suite. Does that also
mean I will have to pay an annual fee as they do now with the Wintel
systems? I then find that Bento's Database software looks to be out of date and
not produced. File Maker looks a bit expensive.

I realise most of my lack of information will be because I am not well
versed in Mac software and I hope the very knowledgeable folk on this group
might help me out with some advice.

Thank you in advance.

Peter.

There are open source suites, "Open Office" and others that are free and you have IWorks for a fairly reasonable price.  Ed --- In macsupportcentral@yahoogroups.com, <thompsonpe@...> wrote: Good afternoon,

Take a look at Libre Office and Neo Office.

Peter: If you are used to the Word, Excel, and PowerPoint (Microsoft) office programs, you will find that the Apple equivalents (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote) are just as good and much easier to use.

Especially Pages vs Word. Word has become so overloaded with "features"; that get in the way. Many of us think that Word hit its peak at version 5.1, which was very useful, and in fact, reminds me of Apple Pages.

I would say that Pages is much, much better than Word.
I would say that Numbers is almost as good as Excel.
I would say the Keynote and PowerPoint are equal.

And no annual fees, by the way.

I'm sorry that FileMaker's "Bento" is going away. That was a great little database program.
And you're right–FileMaker Pro is a bit expensive. There are some other Mac-oriented data bases, but I am not very familiar with them.

Cheers!

earle

Go easier on your self, and there is plenty of software for both OS X and iOS.

As Earle pointed out, Pages, Numbers and Keynote are the replacements for Office. There are other Office replacements as others have mentioned.

Sadly Filremaker is dropping Bento, so if you can find a copy, grab it. FM is way too expensive for non-business use.

Once you get a Mac that is new enough to have the (Mac) App Store app on it, you can find lots of software there, besides elsewhere. You need 10.6.8 or newer to have the App Store app.

In the middle of moving a ton of files from one external FW800 drive to another, progress suddenly halted. I clicked the "stop" button in the progress window and now it's stuck there saying "stopping."

After some recent problems with a different drive, I'm reluctant to take further action without asking some advice regarding what would be the most sensible next step.

Do I risk something as drastic as a hard reboot? Or is there a safer, "softer" way out of this?

I can't do anything that would jeopardize the drives, as one of them is my photo archive and the other is its backup. So sort of a nightmare scenario, with both copies of my archive involved.

Help? Thanks!

Force-quit Finder. You won't lose anything already copied.

You just won't know what was fully copied over. Redo all the files you were moving, but copy them over in smaller groups.
