itunes has pdf files listed under the book tabs. Where do they go on the touch and how can I see them there?

PDFs end up in iBooks, if it's installed on your device. If iBooks is not present on your device, PDFs (and EPUBs) will be ignored during syncing.

I did have iBooks on my Touch4 -- but not at the moment.
It's a free app in the iTunes store.
There are also numerous PDF-reader-apps available, including some free, that
you can put things in via file-sharing in iTunes.
I use GoodReader (not free) which has many capabilities and is worth the
price, on my iP-devices.
