It's the new, annoying, sponsored posts we are all getting.

HP has a customer service number. I struggled for hours with my printer and finally called the number, and they were able to help right away.
I suggest you call them. Even if they say your printer is out of warranty (mine was) they will probably help anyway, and even if you have to pay a little for their service (which you shouldn't, but such is life) it will be cheaper both in dollars and in aggravation than buying a new printer.

No, they're pretty useless. The phone office is closed and the online help won't let me go further unless I agree to pay for service. Without knowing the cost, I'll pass. I haven't been too impressed with HP at all over the years, so it just may be the right time to switch to something else.

Thanks for your help.

Many Mac users have found Canon's driver support to be excellent over many
OS X versions. Their hardware generally comes out at, or near, the top too,
so I suggest you consider them.

Having been in the same situation before--and specifically with an HP printer, when I upgraded from 9 to 10--I know how frustrating it can be, but I wouldn't give up so easily. If there is a generic problem using that particular printer with 10.8, others have also been affected and one of them may have a solution. Have you tried posting to discussions.apple.com?

I would say that if you don't love your HP printer, go with the Canon.

My two HPs are great - WAY better than the Brother MFP I had before - and I was willing to work to get them to work.

But just because the website says that a printer will work with an OS doesn't mean that it will.

I bought a new Macbook Pro running Mountain Lion and tried everything to get my HP printer to work. Their website said that it would, but it didn't - and when I finally talked to customer support, the guy said immediately that there wasn't a driver yet for Mt Lion. Other people on this list have said that HP is slow to get caught up on drivers when the Mac OS is updated.

Something to keep in mind. OTOH, I had to buy a new printer after finding out that my old one wouldn't work (yet) and HP gave me a 20% discount and free shipping.

So... I can get a good deal on this printer but I'm wondering about compatibility with Mountain Lion. What do you think? http://usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/printers_multifunction/imageclass_series/imageclass_mf4570dn?selectedName=DriversAndSoftware

It looks like it might not be 100% compatible with the OS.

Thanks, David.

I found this and will try it in the morning http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1253

It's not so much a case of giving up easily as it is a case of having to troubleshoot my HP products far too often and not having the same solution work every time.

I don't have an answer but it is strange that the both printers stopped working when they had worked before. Was there any kind of environmental event like a power surge which may have affected your electronics since the last time you printed?

Sleep and MacPro is almost an oxymoron. My first MacPro [2007 w/ 2x4 core processors] would not sleep. Opened an AppleCare case with 36 hours left on AppleCare. Worked that problem for about 3 months before Apple replaced the machine in spring 2010 with an early 2009 MacPro.

Opened an AppleCare case on Aug 30 on the replacement MacPro. This machine would not wakeup. Power-strip off/on usually required. Even with power cycling first push of the power button would fire up the Video card fan for 2-3 seconds then everything would shutdown. Second press of the power switch would usually result in a successful boot. On a couple of occasions overnight power-strip off was required. Apple CSR approved a power supply and main board replacement. Local Apple retailer did not want to tackle the problem and recommended on site repair. Its only an hour to the nearest Apple store [thats a 20 min drive to the airport, a 20 min flight over open ocean and then another 20 min drive to my home]. Tech was on site for just over four hours swapping the two parts on Oct 26.

I've been waiting for the hardware repair before upgrading to ML, I'm not sure now that I want to upgrade to 10.8

Thanks, Dan. I have NOT tried your suggestions as yet.

Before I received your suggestions, I found a recommendation via Google search, which seems to be working so far. Time will tell. If it craters again, I will try your suggestions. Here is the link to the thread, plus the specific steps that I followed:

http://hintsforums.macworld.com/showthread.php?t=162658

**********************************************************
I found a post in another forum regarding the same issue.
1 Open Energy Saver in System Preferences.
2 Uncheck "Wake for Network Access".
3 Shut down computer.
4 Start-up in Safe Mode by holding the Shift Key immediately after pushing the Start Button.
**********************************************************

After doing this, I set my energy saver to NEVER sleep either the computer or my display. Then I turned on one of the standard screensavers and set it to come on after 20 minutes. It worked all day after I did the above. We will see what tomorrow brings, since I usually log off at night and physically turn off the monitors.

Any suggested guidelines for donating to developers of either freeware or shareware? Sometimes their sites have a suggested donation, and other times they don't.

I always feel if I download and use a program, even if it is "free" I should donate.

How do you determine the amount?

If you have an original copy of QuicKeys for OS X that you're not using, I'd like it.

Version not important, as I will upgrade it as needed.

Please contact me privately, off list, with version number.

Thanks,
