Twitter killing off TweetDeck for iPhone, Android to focus on web client

Posted: 04 Mar 2013 06:19 PM PST

Tweetdeck-Desktop

Twitter has announced this evening that it will be discontinuing its mobile TweetDeck apps in favor of the web client. Both the Android and iPhone clients will soon be be removed from their respective App Stores.

Interestingly enough, the desktop versions of the app will live on (except for TweetDeck AIR it seems). But it looks like they will do so without Facebook integration, as the feature will be completely removed…(...)

Evasi0n 1.5.1 is out with updated Cydia package list

Posted: 04 Mar 2013 05:16 PM PST

Evasion Wallpapers

Last week, Saurik announced that Cydia has been installed on over 14 million unique devices running on iOS 6 or higher. And a large portion of those devices were likely jailbroken using the evasi0n jailbreak tool.

This evening, the evad3rs posted a new update for that tool. The update brings the app to version 1.5.1, and includes an updated Cydia package list, which, correct me if I’m wrong, should improve its loading time…(...)

Upcoming tweak brings a Do Not Disturb Lock screen toggle to the iPhone

Posted: 04 Mar 2013 04:28 PM PST

Flusterless

Flusterless is an upcoming jailbreak tweak that will bring a handy Do Not Disturb (DND) toggle to the iPhone’s Lock screen. The elegantly designed tweak positions the toggle to the left of the Lock screen clock, and it is invoked using a simple swipe gesture.

Enabling DND using a swipe displays a moon icon that matches the status bar icon indicating that DND is enabled. Disabling DND using a swipe gesture briefly displays a sun icon, which quickly fades from view. If you’re someone who often uses DND, then Flusterless is a jailbreak tweak that you should keep an eye out for.(...)

How to link Fantastical to the stock Calendar app icon

Posted: 04 Mar 2013 03:21 PM PST

OpenOther Fantastical

I absolutely love Fantastical. It’s a wonderful way to manage my week-to-week activities via my iPhone, and there’s a desktop client as well. Fantastical uses “real” language when it comes to adding appointments to your calendar. This means that I can simply type: Dinner with the wife next Wednesday at six, and it knows to setup an appointment on March 13 at 6PM. That’s really just the beginning of how useful Fantastical is, but this isn’t meant to be a review of Fantastical, this is a tutorial that shows you how to link Fantastical to the stock Calendar app.(...)

It’s not just iPhone 5S: budget iPhone also could come in colors

Posted: 04 Mar 2013 01:48 PM PST

iPhone6-004

If the latest chatter coming out of Apple’s Asian supply chain is to be trusted, Taiwanese contract electronics manufacturer Pegatron – which produces some Apple products alongside primary gadget builder Foxconn – has been commissioned to build a rumored less-pricey iPhone that the Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, Reuters and other high-profile publications previously reported on as a done deal.

It’s been thought the device has a hybrid plastic/metal design, with the polycarbonate part of its body being similar to what Apple used on the now discontinued white plastic MacBook. And now, latest reports add colors to the mix…(...)

The White House responds: cell phone unlocking should be legalized

Posted: 04 Mar 2013 12:50 PM PST

iPhone 4S Factory Unlock

With the United States Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski promising last Thursday to look into cell phone unlocking, the federal government is now expressing concern about the recent criminalization of the controversial topic, with the White House finally making known its official stance on cell phone unlocking.

R. David Edelman, a Senior Advisor for Internet, Innovation, and Privacy  for the White House, Monday published the official response stating the government stands in support of those wishing to unlock their cellphones once they have fulfilled the terms of the contract. Unlocking your iPhone, as you know, basically frees your handset from the clutches of your carrier so you can take it to any wireless company’s network…(...)

Creating the perfect jailbroken iPad: The 15 best iPad jailbreak tweaks

Posted: 04 Mar 2013 12:45 PM PST

Creating The Perfect iPad

I'm going to be honest with you — jailbreaking an iPad hasn’t been nearly as appealing to me as jailbreaking my iPhone. But as I started working on this list, I realized that there really are some awesome, and I mean awesome ways to trick out your iPad once it’s jailbroken.

Considering that I do a lot of writing on my iPad, I found that a many of these tweaks immensely helped my writing workflow. Tweaks like BeeKeyboard, and SwipeSelection are absolute essentials for iPad writers, even if you’re not really into the jailbreak scene.

Obviously that’s not all, as virtually everyone will find a jailbreak app or tweak that suits their fancy. Yes, the iPad jailbreak scene is alive, and it’s better than ever. Despite my initial doubts, I was able to come up with a solid list of 15 awesome jailbreak tweaks that work with the iPad running iOS 6. There’s no filler here, and no fluff — each of these tweaks represent, what in my opinion, is the best of the best. Take a look inside, and see for yourselves.(...)

How much control Saurik really has over Cydia

Posted: 04 Mar 2013 12:35 PM PST

Saurik Interview

Cydia, despite being the go-to app and tweak store for several years in the jailbreaking community, has a number of shortcomings. It’s slow to load and daftly unorganized, among other things.

And most people tend to blame Saurik for all of these issues. After all, he is the creator and ‘grandmaster’ of Cydia, right? Not so much, according to his latest comments in a Reddit thread…(...)

Fresh iPhone 6 mockups call for a 4.6-inch edge-to-edge display

Posted: 04 Mar 2013 11:50 AM PST

iPhone 6 mockup (Martin Hajek 001)

Martin Hajek, a 3D artist well-regarded for his mockups of future gadgets, is back at it again, this time with a fresh batch of renditions depicting what an iPhone 6 with a 4.6-inch screen might look like. He’s calling for an edge-to-edge screen assembly – which in his vision looks just stellar – and the aluminum Unibody chassis with anodized black and silver back.

It’s kinda like a cross between the iPad’s back shell and the iPhone 5′s two-tone design. Notice the ultra thin bezels and the lack of the Home button…(...)

In addition to the obligatory stability and security improvements and bug fixes, Chrome build 25.0.1364.86 has brought out the ability to re-visit previously visited web pages by long-taping the back button.

This invokes a drop-down menu listing a history of the web pages you visited in the current session. The feature is also available on the desktop version of Chrome as well as on desktop and mobile version of Apple’s Safari browser. Another nice-to-have enhances Chrome’s Sharing menu with a new option for sending a web page via Messages…(...)

AAPL dips below $400B, Buffett tells Cook to ignore cash complaints, buy back stock

Posted: 04 Mar 2013 11:35 AM PST

buffett

You can’t get a better financial advisor than Warren Buffett. The so-called ‘Oracle of Omaha’ Monday weighed in on what Apple should do, faced with low stock prices and one investor’s call to use the iPhone maker’s billions in cash. Although Buffett’s appearance Monday morning on CNBC lasted three hours, the short version is this:

Apple CEO Tim Cook should buy his company’s stock while cheap. It’s uncertain whether the financial whiz will have any luck, seeing Cook’s predecessor Steve Jobs supposedly ignored similar advice. Coincidentally or not, Apple's market capitalization dropped below $400 billion in early trading Monday, the first such drop since January 2012…(...)

Bloomberg: iWatch will run iOS, is due by Christmas

iwatch2 1

A few months ago, you couldn’t move without encountering yet another Apple television rumor. But if you are interested in profit – and what company isn’t – the execs in Cupertino should cancel any HD TV and focus on wristwatches. Turns out, the wristwatch business could be way more profitable than Apple-made TVs.

Rival firms lust after Apple’s huge profit margins. In a potential stroke of good timing, massive margins from the much-rumored iWatch could replace the iPhone – even slacking PC sales, one Wall Street analyst forecasts Monday…(...)

It has already happened in the United States and now comes word 2013 will mark the date when smartphones outsell simpler so-called feature phones globally. More than 918 million smartphones such as Apple’s iPhone will ship this year, for the first time outnumbering feature phones.

According to research firm IDC, a nice 50.1 percent of mobile phones shipped this year will be smartphones, most destined for China. However, that small lead should widen greatly by 2017 as more emerging nations increase adoption of the powerful mobile devices…(...)
