I think 160 characters in Internet protocol with padding of parity bits and making of a packet along with ack message from the recipient, ends up as something like 230 bytes.
Nevertheless, in the times of massive video files, this is almost free.

best

iMessages cost exactly as much as the actual data used costs.
1000 messages of 160 characters each will contain a total of 160 kBytes of data, or 0.16 MB, and that's what you will pay for, at whatever your data rate is.

Not free, but almost.
For example, AT&T's most *expensive* data subscription gives you 300 MB of data for $20/month. At that rate, 1000 iMessages of 160 characters each will cost, in total, less than 11 CENTS.

Thank you all for your input. I do appreciate all the help I glean from this group.  I'm a very non-tech person, a senior who needs all the help I can get.

If you have any interest in tech and would like to learn more, try a podcast or two. I recommend Leo Laporte at http://leoville.com/ I've learned quite a bit from him. He does have a podcast or two that are still pretty much over my head, like Security Now. If you are a Mac person MacBreak Weekly is a good one. If you are a Windows person, Windows Weekly is a good one.

Thanks so much for this info...I'm a MAC convert, had PC's for years but made the switch last year...never looked back.  I'm typing this message on my old PC, it feels weird, so slow, the keyboard requires a hard touch compared to the MAC.

I'm a switcher from Windows to Mac also. Switched in 2006. Was the best thing I've ever done. Was very fr,ustrated with Windows at the time I switched. I had been listening to Leo Laportes radio show on Sundays. Once I joined my first Mac group on yahoo, I learned about podcasts and live streaming of podcasts. I've learned so much since then. I knew nothing about Apple and their products when I bought my first Mac. It was a whole new world. One I've never regretted entering. Now, I own a mid- 2011 MacBook Air, a mid-2010 iMac, an iPad 2 and an iPhone. I've become an Apple fan. As they say, I drank the kool aid LOL

I'm of the same mind.  I never liked Windows.  I knew nothing about Apple except for my iPod. which I've had for years, now known as the "classic", 60 GB.I bought a MacBookPro a year ago Jan., then the iPhone 4s which I love.  Next will be the iPad, can't wait.

I still have my 2nd gen white iPod. It's the USB/Firewire one. It worked ok with Windows but I wasn't able to use iTunes and I was unhappy with the windows Music Match. Now I have the iPod Classic 160GB. That's the only classic Apple sells now. I store my whole iTunes library on it and still have room for more. I also have the 5th gen nano with the video cam on it and the nano everyone uses for a watch. Hubby bought me the watch nano. I have kept the 2nd gen iPod because hubby bought it for me and it has the inscription "You are the music in my life" on the back. Very sweet considering he's not a real flowery type guy. It still works when plugged in. Battery life sucks on it but it's good for podcasts. I keep it plugged into my iHome radio/alarm clock.

How sweet of your husband to have your Nano engraved with that sentiment!  Awww.  One of the geeks at Apple store told me to hang onto my iPod Classic...said it's a great storage device and has more than the iPhone...so it's still with me.  I do love that thing too, especially for audio books when I walk...which I have to get back to soon.

I'm looking for a dock, are you pleased with the iHome radio?  Is the sound good?

Jesse,

I like my iHome radio. Sound is good for that type of device. I listen to podcasts through it and to the radio program Coast to Coast on it, so I don't need much. Mostly I turn it on at night when I go to bed. It has a sleep option on it which lowers to nothing before it shuts off completely. I'm usually asleep when that happens.

I prefer the ones by Sony from Best Buy but I can't find the same ones anymore. They have a different style.
They have been more durable and louder. I used to use them 10hrs a day
And the apple didn't hold up.
The Sony part number I can't find is
DR-E10iP. $30 if you can find them.

My daughter introduced me to Dr. Dre - a bit pricey but the sound is amazing. They are comfortable for hours and have the side benefit of being like ear plugs when I fly. The come with the mic when you want to make calls.

I'll admit I'm a snob when it comes to listening to music. I like to listen to music the way it was recorded, not with extra sounds like quite a few headsets put in, Dr. Dre and Bose for example. I recommend the Sennheiser HD-280 Pro. They sound real nice but a bit pricey. http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-280-Pro-Headphones/dp/B000065BPB/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1331580825&sr=8-1

Since you mentioned needing a mic, the Sennheiser MM 50 iP High Dynamic Sound Earbuds. They are compatible with iPhone and and MP3 players http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-MM-50-iP-Compatible/dp/B001FWYXF0/ref=pd_cp_e_0

There is no public network in the USA that is capable of that speed.

IMT-Advanced is required to provide 100 Mbps to a highly mobile receiver (such as a phone on a moving train), and 1 Gbps to a slow or stationary receiver (most cellphone use).

If I set "set time automatically" under general/date/time to on the time reverts to 1 hour back of current time. If I turn it off then proper current time is shown. Anyone else experiencing the behavior?

Make sure you have your Time Zone set correctly (Settings / General / Date & Time / Time Zone). Not simply a city in the same time zone as you but one that follows the same daylight savings time rules as your location.

Where are you located and what time zone do you have set?

I don't know. It sounds like it's not observing DST but I have no idea why.

Just got backfrom AT&T store. They said they were have a network
problem. Funny thing was by the time I drove the 10 miles they had it
fixed. Oh well. I did upgrade 2 (non i)phones to 3gs for $.99. Should
make wife and kid happy.

HBO will soon allow iCloud users access to Universal and Fox movies

Sent to you by Bill Boulware via Google Reader: HBO will soon allow
iCloud users access to Universal and Fox movies via 9to5Mac by Jordan
Kahn on 3/12/12

With the introduction of the new Apple TV, alongside the new iPad's
introduction last week, we learned that iCloud users would now be able
access purchased movies (which also extends to digital copies uploaded
from DVDs). The feature was previously limited to music and TV shows.
At the time, we unfortunately learned content from Comcast's Universal
and Fox would be blocked from iCloud due to exclusive rights in place
through pre-existing deals with HBO. An HBO spokesperson has now
confirmed to The Wall Street Journal the company will relax the terms
of its deals with the two content providers in order to allow iCloud
users to access to their previously purchased content:

HBO isn't planning to give up its exclusive windows, for which it pays
hundreds of millions of dollars a year… But HBO is relaxing terms to
let users of iCloud and other services send movies they already own to
other devices during those windows, an HBO spokesman said… HBO agreed
to loosen its arrangement with Warner Bros., which is working with
iCloud, and also is in talks with Universal and Fox to do the same, the
spokesman added.

According to the report, both studios are "near a resolution", and Fox
expects to resolve the issues "within weeks". The report continued by
stating that studios have unsuccessfully attempted to get Apple
involved with UltraViolet, a cloud-based iTunes competitor for TV shows
and movies that is backed by most major studios apart from Disney.
Apple had also apparently offered media companies the chance to license
their live and on-demand content to Apple in exchange for a share of ad
revenue. Executives described the offer as a "non-starter."

The report from The Wall Street Journal explained that HBO has
exclusive rights in its deals with Universal and Fox to "beam movies to
consumers during certain "windows" after each film comes out." The
exclusive window typically lasts for a year beginning approximately six
months after the DVD release of a film.

I got a first time message yesterday trying to log into Facebook on my iPhone 3GS.
Message was "ALERT - THIS BUILD IS ONLY ENABLED FOR EMPLOYEES".

Never saw it before and now I can't log into FB anymore from my iPhone.

Any ideas?

Re: Does 5.1 update really solve the battery problem?

I did a full discharge of my 4s after update. However, if only got down to 1% but never did shut down even after an hour or two at 1%. Could be a flaw in the battery display
