Unless she has very complex formatting requirements, she should be able to open and edit her MS Word ".doc" and ".docx" files in Pages, then save them back to the Microsoft formats. There would be a learning curve going from Word 2008 to Pages, but there'd be a learning curve going from Word 2008 to Word 2011.

Word 2008 can read ".docx" files with no problem. Interestingly, however, I've found that when I receive MS Word files as attachments, whether they're in the newer ".docx" or older ".doc" format, I can open them faster in Pages than I can in Word 2008.

Word 2008 does work on the newest MacBook Pros. However, the Office 2011 suite still has trouble living in two worlds. If she gets the Business version of Office 2011, she'll have a ground-up-new replacement for Entourage (Outlook 2011), which has troubles exchanging files with Windows Outlook (I don't remember the details; I just remember there were enough of them to make me move (finally) to Mail from Entourage 2008 instead of updating Office at all.

If she absolutely has to have MS Office, I don't know of any reason that a 30 day trial version of 2011 wouldn't work for her (I don't think it contaminates the files she creates with a non-removable markup in the background when printed, for example).

No problem. Of course " [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]", but the gracious gesture is appreciated nonetheless :-)

I'll throw in one more tidbit about moving to Apple's vs. retaining Microsoft's software. Apple is massaging and improving Spotlight in ways that will progressively enhance it's capabilities. For example, if I search in Spotlight for "Its my signature offering" up pops a Quick Look image of the message you sent me (or one of the reply I'm composing; Spotlight is just that awesomely quick) that looks on screen virtually identical to the message as displayed by Mail.app itself . However, if my mail client were Entourage 2008, Spotlight would find both messages, but instead of Quick Look images of the messages themselves, it would display Microsoft "eml" icon images indicating it had found the messages.

I don't know whether Outlook 2011, which was developed in Cocoa, can display Quick Look file images. Actually, a little impromptu testing tells me quickly that it's not a "Carbon vs. Cocoa" issue: if I search for a text string inside an MS Word or .pdf document, Spotlight can "Quick Look" those documents, although the formatting of the Word documents headers and footers isn't precisely correct).

Perhaps Diane Ross, MS MVP and extraordinarily helpful email guru, might be following this thread and could comment. But the Quick Look display of actual documents from Spotlight searches was one of the final nails in MS Office's coffin for me (because it's not available for messages in Entourage). And, there are hooks that can be added to Spotlight's Quick Look capability that make it even more amazing, such as the ability to EDIT documents displayed by "Quick Looking" them from Spotlight without actually opening the application that created those documents.

Not if you install the Entourage QuickLook Plug-In. You can find it and other QuickLook plug-ins here:

I have not heard about that before. Where can we find such hooks to edit documents?

That would be fine, however you have to make sure to use the Office
Uninstaller application to fully remove the demo before installing
the full version. Lots of folks have had nasty problems by not doing
this first.

As an alternative, in the meantime she could use this free Office clone:

LibreOffice
http://www.libreoffice.org

Or, if she likes LibreOffice, she can stick with it. It is
completely compatible with Office file formats.

None whatsoever.

The Office 2008 installer program doesn't work under Lion, which is a
major problem. You can use Migration Assistant to migrate an
existing installation of Office 2008 over to a Mac running Lion.
There are also some minor problems running Office 2008 under Lion. See:

Thank you.

She has changed plans b/c neither of us are remotely tech savvy.
She plans to drive home (2 hours) after work monday, install my 2008 MSOffice for Mac on her 2011 MBP and return for work tuesday a.m. There will be no other word processing programs other than what is native on her MBP. So we won't have to uninstall a thing. But you wrote:

So are you saying we have to use Migration Assistant rather than the disc that is in the box?

Like I said, technology is not my strong suit.

Transferring iTunes and 1 other app from iMac to MacBook Pro

Posted by: "exhicuturuguay" PKMF1999@yahoo.com   exhicuturuguay

A while back, I got myself a MacBook. At that time, I did not transfer anything from the iMac to the MacBook since they were used for different purposes.

However, I am thinking of getting rid of my iMac. This means I need too transfer my iTunes (including settings for iPod, iPhone 4s, & iPad over to the MacBook. I also would like to transfer 1 app (with data)which I don't have on the MacBook over.

Any suggestions on how to do that without messing up what I already have on the MacBook?

I'd use migration assistant, which would create a new account, but
you can then, at your leisure, transfer stuff from one account to the
other or just keep it as two accounts.

Actually, the account information (login and password are the same on both machines.

I am actually thinking of using iCloud for the iTunes part (if it is possible. However, with over 20 GB in iTunes, I need to check the price.

However, I just realized, I would have to do a 2 version upgrade to the iMac and a 1 version upgrade to the MacBook to use iCloud

Did this and it works fine when plugged directly into the Mini.
Friend came over, did something, but I'm not sure what and then it
worked fine. But a day or so later, it did the same thing. He
suggested turning off the monitor for a few seconds and turning it
back on, thinking the monitor got confused. Did that and then it
worked. But just now it's started it again. Guess I should return the
switch and get another one? Any other ideas?

What's the best gift to give your mom for Mother's Day?????? A pet
portrait!!! See samples at http://www.facebook.com/album.php?
aid=94904&id=754373252&l=2db0188037 Gift certificates are available.

Or, consider animal-themed (spay/neuter, vegetarian, anti-
dogfighting) T-shirts, mugs and other paraphernalia. Good for gifts
or for treating yourself!

Louise,

I believe a number of other people responded that the issue is your Mac Mini is going to sleep and when the KVM switch is plugged in it can't wake the Mac Mini. They suggested setting up the Mini so it doesn't go to sleep. That should fix the problem.

If turning the monitor off and on works, then it is likely the Mini is awake, but the graphics card is failing to "wake" the monitor (technically, it's failing to sync, but "wake" is good shorthand here). This is a common problem with HDMI, even when the HDMI is directly connected from system to monitor, and much more likely if the connection is multi-part. Are you connected to the monitor via HDMI? HDMI uses a tiny flat connector that looks similar to the keyboards USB connector. If so, what other connections are available on your monitor and or the mini? If the monitor has a DVI connection, using an HDMI to DVI adapter at the monitor end can solve this problem.

Cheers,

I don't have any trouble using Separate Window or full screen running 10.6.1 on Lion.

App store question

OK...so I'm a long time Mac user, but I'm stumped.

I'd NEVER used the "App Store" before getting my iPad2 last Nov. Of course a whole new world has opened up - an overwhelming one for sure.

My question, albeit ignorant: is the "Mac App Store" the same thing as the "App Store" on iTunes?

Not the same thing but works the same way. These are apps for the Mac and not the iPad or iPhone.

HD Corrupt

Hi Gurus!

I have a Macbook, Mac OS X version 10.6.8 with Snow Leopard. I'm trying to
do a back-up with Time Machine (fisrt time using Time Machine), and the
back-up couldn't be completed. I wanted to use Onyx so I can declutter the
computer
I verify the disk with Disk Utility and got the following message:

"The volume HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired"

I hit the Repair Disc buttom, it run fine, but then when I verify the disk
again I got the same message again. I did a manual back-up in case I had to
erase it, the thing is it won't let me erase it.

I have no idea what should I do, I'm really starting to worry....HELP!

You can't erase the drive that you are booted up from.
Do you have an external hard drive? I'm guessing you do, since that would be where you were trying to create the Time Machine back-up. What you need to do now is create a bootable copy of Snow Leopard on the external hard drive, boot up from the external drive, and then erase the hard drive in your MacBook.
There are a couple of different ways to approach this task. If I were in your situation, I would get a cloning application (Carbon Copy Cloner and SuperDuper are the most popular ones), which would duplicate everything on your current hard drive. You could then recopy the cloned drive back to the MacBook's erased (and hopefully repaired) hard drive.

Some things to try before you do a complete backup and reformat...

First, reboot your system in "Safe Mode". You do this by holding down the shift key after you hear the boot chime until you see the mac icon. When you reach the Login screen (which may take several minutes) it should say "Safe Boot" a the top of the login box. If it doesn't, try again. You probably did not hold the Shift key early enough or long enough.

If you have reached Safe Mode, then complete the login and run Disk Utility. Run "Verify" on your hard drive (not Repair). Is it fixed? If so reboot and you're good to go. Actually, first look down at the bottom and check the "SMART" status. Make sure this does not indicate any problems. If SMART status indicates anything other than good, let us know. You probably need to replace the drive.

If Verify still reports a bad disk, reboot from your Install disk. When you reach the Install screens, go to the menu bar and find Disk Utility. Run Disk Utility from the menu and try to "Repair" again. Make sure you are clicking "Repair" on the lower right, not "Repair Permissions" on the left. If the Repair fails, it should tell you in the report. The text will be red. If it reports success the text will be green. If it is successful but running Verify again says there is a problem, you have a bigger problem.

If Disk Utility can not repair the disk booted from the Install disk, you need Disk Warrior, which cost $100. It is a great utility and can save a drive that Disk Utility cannot, but if $100 is too steep, the alternative is to follow Paul advice to backup, reformat, and restore.

Cheers,
tod

i-Mac DVD Burner

The DVD Burner on my i-Mac ( 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo ) will no longer
accept blank DVDs ( -R or +R ) - it just ejects them after a spell of what
sounds like seeking. It will however play prerecorded DVDs both commercial
and self recorded. Any ideas what is wrong?
