I am visiting USA next week. I intend to buy spools of DLDVD for use in IMac. Is there a preferred brand to prevent me making useless coasters.

Howdy.

I have tried at least ten brands of DVD-R DL, DVD-RE DL discs and have
had by far the best success with Verbatim brand discs.

Other people that I correspond with also report good success with the
Verbatim brand.

The Sony brand DVD-R SL and DVD-R SL printable available in cake boxes
(spools) of 100 discs at the Costco membership warehouse chain is also
very reliable and the cost is about .29 US cents per disc. If you know
of someone who has a Costco membership it would help. However,
double-layer DVDs are not as easy to find in retail stores.

The prices at MeritLine, online retailer, are often very good for blank
media.

<http://www.meritline.com/>

You could have an order shipped overnight to your US location from
MeritLine.

Thanks Mr Dan,
I am not looking for a bulk but couple of packs of 25s. I think places like bestbuy and target would be everywhere . Thanks for your help.

This is what I use in a variety of Pioneer, Hitachi, and Lite-on burners. I have had no problems attributable to the stock. I burn a lot of dual-layer data discs. I have not run compatibility tests for DVD-Video across multiple DVD players (as opposed to data drives).

I don't know the answer, but I get that too, and am curious about a fix. Maybe having this topic come to the top again will spur a response that is more helpful than mine.
Besides the fact that not all projects and folders show up, folders shows up as projects, and nothing is in the same order as Aperture has them.

My iMac burner failed after 2 yrs. Google search found someone who was told by an APPLE Store "Genius" not to replace it as an external burner would be much cheaper and work better. I bought a Samsung 22X DVD/RW SATA Drive SH-S223C for less than $100 and it has worked great for about a year. Amazon now has a Samsung 22X DVD/RW SATA Drive SH-S223C/BEBE (Black) for $24.98 plus shipping. I don't know what the BEBE stands for. If you get one a Icon in your Desk top Finder helps a lot. This can be done by going to System/Library/Coreservices/MenuExtras and double click on Eject.menu and Bingo you will have an underlined block arrow in your Finder Menu Bar - Slick!

iPad mail "hack"

Posted by: "Bekah" bekah0176@sbcglobal.net   bekalex

Wed Mar 14, 2012 11:48 am (PDT)

Hi good Mac helpers! :-)

I got an email from my sister this morning which had a link in it so I clicked on it (because sis was using an iPad and I trust her, too). The link went to something stupid and when I tried to get off the site it kind of wouldn't let me but I did a force quit instead of answering their bloody question and all is well with me!

So I wrote and she acknowledged that something must have got into her mail - she didn't send it.

It could have been a hack on her server account rather than the iPad so I told her to change her password there first. The question: What else could it be? What else should she do? Anything? Could it have been a bug in her iPad mail?

I am 99.999% sure that *nothing* has happened to your sister. Something has happened to one of her PC-using friends.
Spammers typically fake the "From" address in email that they send out. When they infect a PC, they harvest all of the email addresses in its contact list, and send out mass emailings that claim to be from every one of those addresses.
Tell your sister to relax, but send a word of warning to her poor PC-using friends.

You can trust your sister, but just because the email claims to be from her, it doesn't mean it came from her or you can trust the email.

Besides Paul's suggestion that it could be one of her friends accounts that got hacked, it could be one of your sisters accounts that got hacked.

You didn't what the email server was or what email application sent wrote and sent the email.

We're still 99% sure that nothing happened to her iPad.

Howdy.

You can use iChat to send SMS messages.

Launch iChat and look under the Buddies menu.

I look in iChat and under a Buddy, I right-click and choose "Show Info".

I see fields for name, email, AIM and Jabber contacts, but I see no
field for cell number for texting.

Where do you enter a buddy's cell number?

Thanks,
Dave

Howdy.

Select a "buddy" in your Buddy list in iChat. The buddy needs an
Address Book entry with a cell phone number.

Then pick the Buddies menu and select the Send SMS… command.

A text dialog should appear in iChat's window pre-addressed to an SMS
cell phone number.

Type your text and press Enter.

I just tried this from iChat to my iPhone and the message came through
instantly.

I'm using iChat in Lion but it should be the same in Snow Leopard.

Hmmm.

I don't know why, but I am getting a non-standard font with your message

new iMacs?

I currently have a MacBook Pro (2.5ghz/4GB/250GB)doing 3d modeling and video editing and have the need to buy a new machine. I've been considering the top-end model iMac as a possibility. Has anyone heard anything on what the next incarnation of iMac will include? My focus is on RAM and Graphics card.
Is Apple moving back to nVidia (my preference) as previously speculated?
Will RAM be upgradeable further than 16GB?
Any idea when we're looking at release?

Any info is appreciated!

Thanks.

I don't know the typical refresh cycle for the iMac, but two rumors were posted on <http://www.powerpage.org/> today, one that Apple's plans to use nVidia's next generation "Kepler" graphics cards for discrete graphics support in the next MacBook Pro have been derailed because Nvidia has struggled with its 28-nanometer manufacturing process for its next-generation graphics processors, code-named Kepler. Separately, they published another rumor that there might not even BE a 15" MacBook Pro refresh because the absence of discrete graphics makes differentiation from an upcoming 15" MacBook Air difficult.

Have you noticed reminders set in iCal can be sorted manually if the calendar is saved on your Mac.

Reminders cannot be sorted manually if they're stored on iCloud.

what is best duplicate-file-detector program?

I have several thousand duplicate files on my Macbook Pro as a result of
consolidating
three older machines to the Pro.

I want to get rid of all of the dups. I downloaded MacKeeper but haven't
installed
it yet. There seems to be some dispute on this group as to whether MK is a
good
or bad thing.

If not MacKeeper, is there a recommended utility that one can use in a
situation
like this? I am willing to pay a reasonable fee for something that works.

You know, I used MacKeeper for dup. files, and I loved it, but I removed the program because of all the negativity about it.

I would also know what else to use.

There are several flavors of DupeGuru that work well. It was
'donationware' at one point, and I paid my dues as it did work well.

"Best" is subjective. I use DupeGuru and like it. I find the developer's "fairware" donation policy bloody confusing but I still like it.

It's kinda donationware with a nag screen. At this point the developer has apparently paid for DupeGuru (the primary goal of the model). You can unlock the nag for a minimal donation.
