No, any time I restart or shut down, I meticulously quit absolutely everything that is running, at least according to the indicators on the Dock.

I would love to know that Terminal command to change the default. I missed it somehow, in spite of eager interest on my part. I NEVER shut down with anything showing has active in the Dock, unless I'm having some kind of freeze and have to force a shut down.

But that is not what's happening in this case.

Check back through this thread. I have the impression it came from Harry Flaxman, but I am not sure. It is not a long thread.

Yup, I posted a site that has a script of Unix commands that will
disable auto execute of programs completely, during startup. Can't find
the original messsage, but here goes:

<http://osxdaily.com/2011/08/25/disable-reopen-windows-when-logging-back-in-in-mac-os-x-lion-completely/>

The page contains a script which can automatically download and execute
a Unix script that will take care of this for you. If you don't trust,
or don't want to have this automation, there is also a listing of the
actual script that disables application autostart upon restart or login.

Start-Up Apps Upon Launch

Can't believe I cannot find this!

I want to disable one of the start-up applications on my system and
for the life of me cannot locate the way to do this within the system
preferences. I am running Mac OS 10.5.8.

The more I know the less I remember .. sigh.

I am guessing it is under accounts in system preferences. There are
two options, one to hide the app and one to eliminate it from the
list totally.

Yes, System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items.

I found it, and it WAS from Harry Flaxman. I have executed the script, and am very happy. Thank you!

It was at: <http://osxdaily.com/2011/08/25/disable-reopen-windows-when-logging-back-in-in-mac-os-x-lion-completely/>

I like Newstand. WHy does it disgust you?

I can't speak for Michel, but I dislike it because you can not remove it if you don't use it. The only thing in mine is the NewYork Times, free version. I can't move the NYT out of it and I can not move any of my other newspaper apps into it. So I lose one location because I can not get rid of Newsstand, and I have no plan to use it.

It will accomodate only paid subscriptions made through iTunes, I believe.

Try your local library for free downloads. That's the only inexpensive way

Thanks - My library can't afford much and is not a good resource. I
will look again at Audible.

Talk with your library. They may be in a cooperative. Mine is actually not with my city, but my county. Your librarian may know if there is another that you may have access to.

Great suggestion. I used to patronize a tiny library in a small town that belonged to a regional library co-op. I could order an amazing wealth of titles through them.

Kaspersky's statements are somewhat contradictory. They warn that SabPub has the potential to infect many more people than earlier versions of the Trojan, but then state that "It would seem that the attackers have an extremely select list of victims that is not very large."
As I recall, the earlier Word-vulnerability exploiting version of the Trojan was targeting Tibetan exiles, and was backtracked to a Chinese university. Sounds like this could be another instance of the same.
