Does this work in iOS 5.1? I thought Apple disabled the ability to make shortcuts with the latest OS update. Makes no sense why either. I have a folder with about 8-10 shortcuts that became disabled upon the update. I used the WiFi one quite often and a VPN one occasionally. I now have Bluetooth headphones that the shortcut would be preferable rather than navigating down 3-4 levels in settings to turn on and off.

It has little to do with battery technology and mostly is dependent on cell phone technology. Every cell phone talks to the cell tower periodically. It has to so the cell tower can contact the phone in the event of an incoming call. Smart phones make it more involved of course with all the background program execution and data communications.

When I choose a destination, I have 3 choices.
In the middle is the "share" icon.
On the right is "Edit".
On the left is "Nav Choices".
Choose that last one.
Near the bottom of that screen is "Pre-Load Maps".

You can preload and simulate your route before a trip. I think it would still use the GPS but by preloading I think you can turn off cell data.

To preload a map, when you choose a destination, instead of clicking the green navigate button at the top, click the Nav Choices button in the middle left. There's a preload maps button at the bottom which takes you to another screen where you can just preload or preload and simulate.

I like both the Motion-X Drive app and the regular Motion-X for when I go walking or hiking.

You need anything besides he app MotionX for this to work? I know the TomTom app it talks about that whole kit to purchase. I run the 4s here so don't need anything elseI correct?

The best GPS app that I found is "WAZE". It is free to download and use. It gives you "turn by turn" directions, speaks street names, warns you ahead of time about turns and apparently does not use satellites. It is interactive. Its users give real time warnings about traffic, hazards etc. Yes, it uses data when not in wi-fi but the data it uses is relatively small. Well worth looking into. I have given up using any other GPS equipment that I had bought. Works on iPad too.

I wanted a turn by turn gps like my son has... But it is a google app and not available via apple app store. So I got one for 99¢ called skobble. I love it. It is clear speaking and changes it's map directions for you should you take another route. I couldn't turn at one of the lights because of the sign that said no turn from 8:30am to 6:30pm so I changed my route and Skobble got me to my destination. The map is easy to follow as it is large and easily marked. The app comes from Germany. I haven't used it anywhere yet accept locally in Roch. But I imagine it works about anywhere. The maps can be obtained for a fee if you want to have them in front of you or ahead of time, but I haven't looked into it.

The only downsize is that in the directions it says to keep it hooked up to power to save battery time. I found out that when I did that I got no sound at all. It could be my charger which is a third party charger. I don't know for sure, but I have not run out of battery power yet. When I don't need it specifically I plug my phone back into the power source in the car.

No.

And you don't need anything else to run TomTom, either.

That said, I find the TomTom Car Kit *extremely* useful, mainly (1) to hold and display the iPhone for me, and (2) to charge it. The continuous use of the GPS function drains the battery quickly.

Wrong.
It *is* a GPS App; it *does* use satellites.

Also, it isn't completely free, since it has to continually download the maps it display with, using the data plan that you are paying for.

In iTunes, under the "File" menu, there is a selection near the bottom of the menu to transfer purchases from iPhone to iTunes.

1. I hesitate to suggest this, but -- restore from your backup.

2. Remove the hard drive from the dead computer and connect it to the new.

3. iCloud/iTunes Match

4. Several applications are available to extract music from an iDevice and import it to a PC. I am not *familiar* with them, since I live on a Mac.

Look for an app called Senuti. It will move music off your iPhone and allow you to put it back into iTunes, in a case like yours.

I had a similar problem once and that is what I used to save having to reload all that music.

Note the name Senuti is iTunes spelled backwards, and that is what it does, it moves music in the other direction of iTunes.

all of my music is stored on my laptop's hard drive in a separate partition and backed up onto two different external drives. my itunes is set to that partition so in a case like yours all i'd need do is replace the hard drive or laptop, restore the music files from one of the external hard drives and then download the music from the new hard drive into the phone. no need for separate apps or any anxiety. i like to keep things simple.

Wrong use for Senuti. It copies music from a iDevice back into iTunes.

This is an iDevice list and Rene and Sanjaya were trying to save music from their iDevices back into a new iTunes set up.

Senuti is not for backing up a computer.

Being directionally challenged, MotionX has my vote. Caching maps ahead of time & simulating the route takes stress off my trip. Voice guidance is great, and gives me timely warnings for lane changes, exits, etc. worth every penny. I've been using it for over 2 years now. It has also improved over time.

Synching iPhone 4S to my former Iphone 4?

I have done a synch on my iPhone 4S & updated the software, but now I wish to synch it with the settings on my former iPhone4.
To put it simply, my iPhone 4 was nicknamed "X-Man" on iTunes.
My iPhone 4S is nicknamed "Andy-Siri".
How do synch my X-Man settings/photos/playlists for X-Man onto my new iPhone on iTunes?

Thanks, -Andy P.

When you first plugged your new 4S (Andy-Siri), you should have been presented with options to either setup as new or restore from a backup. If you choose the latter, then choose the backup from X-Man, Andy-Siri would look the same as X-Man.
