I recommend that all iOS users download the manual into iBooks so they have
it handy at all times.

Howdy.

On an iPhone, you highlight/select a word, phrase, sentence, paragraph,
by tapping the word or phrase to see a selection command item appear on
screen.

You might try a tap but if that doesn't do it try pressing your finger
on the sentence for just a moment longer than a tap.

The "command item" will say Copy Select All Define. You can then tap
one of the commands.

Or,

Note the blue dots at each end of the selected item. You can hold one
of these with a finger to extend or shrink the selection by dragging
it.

The Copy command works like Copy/Paste on your Mac and you could then
open a new email message and do the "tap" and paste it into the message
body.

I did that and had just started looking at the 'fine details' of the os. Was just going to Google it to get an encapsulated version, when you posted the URL.

Thanks again Otto.

Howdy.

I think you have an older scanner that won't be getting a driver and
software update from Canon for the most recent versions of Mac OS X.

You might check out SilverFast and VueScan.

<http://www.silverfast.com>

<http://hamrick.com/>

I think the SilverFast site and software is a bit confusing at first
glance so spend some time reading about the basic, mid, and high end
version of the scanning software.

VueScan is done by a guy named Ed Hamrick who has been making his
VueScan software for a long time. I think it's pretty good but may be
a bit more oriented toward film and transparency scanning.

Both are 3rd party scanning programs that support many older scanners.
Be sure to check the list of supported scanner models on each site.

You may also be able to scan - maybe - with Canon's scanning program.

If you are trying to scan via a TWAIN plugin it might not work. We've
been seeing a lag in scanner makers keeping up with the jump from
32-bit to 64-bit in the TWAIN plugin department.

I have a CanoScan 8800F model and can't scan with it from within Adobe
Photoshop (ver. 12.1 from CS5.1) with a TWAIN plugin IF Photoshop is
set to launch in 64-bit mode. If I change Photoshop to launch in
32-bit mode then the TWAIN plugin will work and I can invoke the Canon
scanning software from within Photoshop.

You might try Image Capture in your Applications folder to see if it
can recognize the CanoScan 9900F.

Good luck.

I made a folder that I put on my last page. That folder has several apps that come with the iPhone that can't be deleted which I don't use. They are all in one tiny place. Any new undeleteable app goes into the folder (up to 12 of course). Saves a lot of angst.

I like choice, first and foremost. I want to be able to decide, say,
that The Economist goes straight on the first home screen on my iPad,
while regrouping other publications elsewhere if I see it as necessary.

Imposing Newsstand is taking that choice away from me.

You might have had an out-of-control log file that was deleted when
your Mac ran it's maintenance scripts on re-start.

If that's the case, it's likely that the application that was in
distress, and hence writing the same error message to a log over and
over again until your hard drive filled up, will still be problematic
and that the situation will repeat itself.

Here is a short article that I once wrote, hosted by a friend, on
how to deal with the problem next time it occurs:

Frequently after waking from sleep Safari (or Firefox, if I'm using
that) is very sluggish and I must restart. I presume they have a
memory "leak" and keep eating memory.

I'm guessing that a log file (as Randy said) or a virtual memory file
(my guess) has grown to eat up all available disk space.

Rotating through Safari's windows (...or not)

Posted by: "DaveC" davec2468@yahoo.com   davec2468

Randomly, it seems, when I press Command-` (that's the key just below
the Esc key) Safari will rotate between all its windows.

But sometimes (as just now) it rotates between just 4, or 2 of those windows.

When I pull down the Windows menu I see that I have 24 windows open.

Anyone else see this behavior? Know the cause?

Thanks,
Dave

What is the cause of NOT rotating through ALL the windows? (Hint: it

Networked Color Laser Printers

Hi

We need to buy a medium grade color printer for our educational support venture - Quotient 1 Learning (www.quotient1.com)

So far we were using the HP DesktJet 6500 Wireless Multi-function Print/Copy/Scan/Fax for printing our material. However, the per page printing cost is high using a DeskJet as we need to print 30-40 pages per day in color.

We are looking to purchase a medium duty color laser printer - that can be connected to the network by either ethernet or wireless and can be accessed by both Macs and PCs with good support. I like the HP Brand for the life of their printers and general availability of consumables.

Can anyone please suggest a good printer which we can buy? I currently have a list of two printers available with my vendor

These are model numbers 1525 and 1515 which are both in the range of INR 20,000 to INR 25,000 (USD 400-500)

Request an early response.

Look at the Xerox range - impressive colour and true Postscript.

My own experiences of HP - and a number of others too - is that a good model is ok but a bad model is atrocious.

If you can get the Xerox Pagepack contract in India it really brings the per page price down amazingly. And the contract gives you full parts and labour too.

Re: Samsung display - need better calibration

Posted by: "Dane Robison" macdane@mac.com   macdane1

Unfortunately, additional software won't do you any good if you don't have the capability to make further adjustments. The next step beyond "eyeballing" it in System Prefs -- and it's a significant step -- is a colorimeter. This is a device that works in conjunction with software to display certain ranges of color on your display and then accurately read those colors, making necessary adjustments in hardware. In a nutshell, the calibration system knows what it's displaying and what it *should* look like, and it sees what it *does* look like. It's then able to tweak settings until it sees what it thinks it should.

You're looking at a minimum of probably $120, but it *may* be worthwhile. It also may not. In my experience, some inexpensive displays and displays lacking much in the way of manual adjustment may not be possible to accurately calibrate.

I've had good, consistent, reliable hands-on experience with both the Eye One and the ColorMunki, and bad, inconsistent, unreliable experience with the Huey. People whose opinions I trust have spoken highly of the Spyder as well. I'd suggest Googling these to get a handle on what's out there and then possibly take a look on eBay or Craigslist to see if you can find a good deal on a used model.

Good luck!

I bought a Samsung Syncmaster P2770 and had such difficulty getting it calibrated by eyeballing that I was going to buy a more expensive monitor. I bought a Spyder3 and it worked well and the monitor is now useful for photography which it wasn't before.

I noticed that I need to run it again. I guess these monitors don't hold their calibration forever and need redone from time to time.

I think it might have been replaced recently with the Spyder4

hugh.

People whose opinions I trust have spoken highly of the Spyder as well. I'd suggest Googling these to get a handle on what's out there and then possibly take a look on eBay or Craigslist to see if you can find a good deal on a used model.
