If you have the iPhone 4 S use the Siri to dictate messages it's much faster much more convenient and almost magical!
DICTATED USING SIRI!

Mine has always done this, but if you type 75 wpm on an iPhone you probably wouldn't even see the pop up.

I normally type 75 wpm, this issue slowed the keystroke down to half that if not more. I can tell by what you've all replied to is not the issue I ran into.

Can you give us an example of a command to Siri that would take the
messages you dictate?
Thanks!

Talking to your iPhone using Siri is not private like typing is. I have an iPad 3 gen with dictation. Haven't used it. I don't want my side of messages of any sort being listened to by people it doesn't concern. Sound reasonable?

Concerning the popup letters when typing. I tried out the mail app for gmail on my iPhone 4. First reply it worked great. Replies after that, every lettering typed popped up letter by letter. Rebooting my iPhone 4. First reply after reboot was fine. Second reply and so on was the same as before reboot. It seemed the app was getting bogged down and getting really slow. I don't know why.

That's exactly what I'm dealing with. And the pop ups were much larger than when normally typing, right? The delayed appearance of the letter after the key strike was disconcerting...a, pause, b, pause, c, pause...you get the idea. I didn't attempt to reboot my iPhone but now it seems to be OK, seems the slowness occurs when replying to random emails...don' t know how to fix it, don't know when it will be an issue with this randomness.

Yes, exactly :-) Is this in your mail app that came with the iPhone? I only had it happen there once. I rebooted with the on/off button and home button pressed at the same time. I think, for me, that was caused by An app that didn't release the memory it used after being closed out or not rebooting every so often.
It is said that it doesn't matter whether you close out apps on your multitasking bar but I do all the time. I think it saves memory. Here is an Apple discussion group question about it. It might also help.

I don't know if it has been mentioned but check accessibility, you may have inadvertently activated a typing aid.

I subscribed to the radio portion of MLB. I listen on the iPad. While the audio is going, I have the graphic up showing the pitches. I wasn't going to pay the totally too expensive price for the MLB package DirectTV has.
